Book Outpost Berlin

Download or read book Outpost Berlin written by Harold Schwartz and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-30 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University student Helmut Wegner curses himself for his procrastination as he waits in the rain in the muddy woods for his Flchthelfer, the escape helpers. Twelve weeks earlier, prior to August 13, 1961, he could have strolled easily across the border separating East Berlin from the section occupied by the three Western allies. Now, crossing the border is a dangerous endeavor. But Wegner is far from the only man who seeks to escape. Outpost Berlin chronicles the tales of both successful and failed escape attempts over the Berlin Wall since its erection in 1961. Each chapter begins with a short historical background and description of the location, a dedication to an American or German who played a significant role in the defense of West Berlin, and a prologue detailing the implications that the incidents had for West Berlins future. Capturing the essence of the era, Outpost Berlin presents a historical look at the stories of American military intelligence officers, German escapees, and the escape helpers.

Book Western Realism and International Relations

Download or read book Western Realism and International Relations written by Aswini K. Ray and published by Foundation Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an alternative perspective of International Relations from Hiroshima to 9/11. Both its diplomacy and mainstream scholarship are linked by realpolitic, in a vicious circle of retrogressive symbiosis. It simultaneously undermined the UN system of collective security from its origin and the scientific credential of its scholarship. The Cold War that it spawned restricted economic propsperity, political stability and democratic freedom within its narrow core-area of the United States and Europe at the cost of its vast periphery in the Third World. Its unpredicted collapse extended insecurity across the entire globalised system, including its core area, as evnts since 9/11 forcefully underscores. While the new hegemonic system has become globally more insecure for all its citizens, its scholarship is still clueless about the collapse of teh bipolar system it created in the midst of the massive confidence-building exercise to stabilise it; it is even less able to creatively respond to its orderly transition.

  • ISBN : 0307833593
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Correction written by Thomas Bernhard and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-01-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientist Roithamer has dedicated the last six years of his life to “the Cone,” an edifice of mathematically exact construction that he has erected in the center of his family’s estate in honor of his beloved sister. Not long after its completion, he takes his own life. As an unnamed friend pieces together—literally, from thousands of slips of papers and one troubling manuscript—the puzzle of Rotheimer’s breakdown, what emerges is the story of a genius ceaselessly compelled to correct and refine his perceptions until the only logical conclusion is the negation of his own soul. Considered by many critics to be Thomas Bernhard’s masterpiece, Correction is a cunningly crafted and unforgettable meditation on the tension between the desire for perfection and the knowledge that it is unattainable.

Book Uncle Sam and Us

  • Author : Stephen Clarkson
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2002-09-28
  • ISBN : 1442690895
  • Pages : 546 pages

Download or read book Uncle Sam and Us written by Stephen Clarkson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-09-28 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between them, Brian Mulroney and Jean Chrétien radically altered the structure and functions of the federal government, first by signing and implementing major trade liberalization projects, and then by cutting back the size of their governments' budgets and the scope of their policies. Uncle Sam and Us analyzes the Mulroney-Chrétien era's impact on Canadian governance through two related factors, globalization from without and neoconservatism from within. Stephen Clarkson begins his study by conceptualizing the present Canadian state as a five-tiered, nested system stretching from the municipal and provincial levels, through the federal government, and on to the new continental and global spheres of governance: in effect, he argues, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization have added a 'supraconstitution' to Canada's existing institutions. His analysis concerns the changes that have occurred not just in the federal government, but in provincial and municipal governance as well. The impact of globalization and neoconservatism is examined extensively in the second part of Clarkson's study, which examines how the functions of the Canadian state have altered. Clarkson addresses the changes in a number of policy areas such as macro and monetary policy, regulatory, industrial, and trade policy, as well as social, labour, environmental, cultural, and foreign policy. In linking external forces and internal factors in his analysis, Clarkson brings together separate aspects of the Canadian state into a comprehensive understanding of the current Canadian political climate. He combines a global knowledge of the international political economy with a micro concern for detailed analyses of policy issues, and concludes that the responsibility for Canada's predicament lies less with external forces, than with Canadians and the governments they elected. He ends with a hopeful look into the future, pointing towards a realization of the shortcomings of neoconservative globalization, and the expectation of a new governing paradigm.
