Book Singing in the Valley

Download or read book Singing in the Valley written by Pat Lennon and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down in the valley of caring for my husband with Alzheimer's, the Lord comforted and encouraged me with thoughts that He helped me put into poems. God used poetry as my therapy. Each rhyme was such a blessing to me at the time that I want to share them in hopes they will be a blessing to others. We all have valleys of one kind or another, but God has a song for us in every one. This book contains some of the songs God gave me. Pat Lennon is the widow of Horace Lennon, a highly decorated World War II veteran. Upon moving to Taylors, SC, near their six children, she opened Grandmama's Day Care and cared for seven of their fourteen grandchildren. She has written poetry all her life, but two seemingly unrelated events lie behind the books she has authored. Those events were her husband's diagnosis with Alzheimer's and her learning how to use the computer. The poems are an extension of her worship of God and a God-given release from despondency. Physically active most of her life, she is now in a new season--advanced Osteoarthritis. Her books are a reminder that God often uses His people in different ways at different times of their lives. Her favorite hymn, Great Is Thy Faithfulness by Thomas Chisholm and William Runyan, is her testimony.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Western Music and Philosophy

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Western Music and Philosophy written by Tom?s McAuley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 1151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether regarded as a perplexing object, a morally captivating force, an ineffable entity beyond language, or an inescapably embodied human practice, music has captured philosophically inclined minds since time immemorial. In turn, musicians of all stripes have called on philosophy as a source of inspiration and encouragement, and scholars of music through the ages have turned to philosophy for insight into music and into the worlds that sustain it. In this Handbook, contributors build on this legacy to conceptualize the rich interactions of Western music and philosophy as a series of meeting points between two vital spheres of human activity. They draw together key debates at the intersection of music studies and philosophy, offering a field-defining overview while also forging new paths. Chapters cover a wide range of musics and philosophies, including concert, popular, jazz, and electronic musics, and both analytic and continental philosophy.

Book Choral Singing

  • Author : Ursula Geïsler
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2014-10-16
  • ISBN : 144386904X
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Choral Singing written by Ursula Geïsler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does contemporary choral activity play in the construction of social and musical meaning? How can historical knowledge and analysis shed light on contemporary choral problems and possibilities? And how can choral research promote the development and expansion of new music today? Questions like these are addressed in this anthology from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. The book comprises a selection of papers presented at the International Conference on the Concepts and Practices of Choral Singing in Lund, Sweden, in October 2012. The aim of the conference was to highlight the contemporary dynamic developments in choral research, and to explore interdisciplinary investigations and interaction between practice-based and historical approaches. The conference was also the fourth meeting of the network “Choir in Focus”, which was initiated in 2009 at Southern Choral Centre (Körcentrum Syd), a joint venture between Malmö Academy of Music, the Department of Musicology, Odeum (all at Lund University), Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Music South (Musik i Syd), Sweden. The continuous ambition of the network has been to provide a forum for co-operation across national and disciplinary borders and to encourage debates around the musical and social function of choirs in modern society as mirroring collective and individual needs for meaning, music-making and well-being. In the introductory chapter, the editors describe choral practice as a field of simultaneous (re)presentation, (re)production and (re)creation, and suggest that these three aspects may be seen as umbrella themes for the fifteen chapters of the anthology. The authors come from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal and Belgium, and explore choral practice from differing theoretical and methodological starting points. Together, they contribute to a transdisciplinary discussion about the origins, functions and meanings of choral singing.
