Book US Singapore Relations 1965 1975

Download or read book US Singapore Relations 1965 1975 written by Daniel Wei Boon Chua and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the height of the Cold War in Southeast Asia, the foreign relations between the United States and Singapore demonstrated the interplay between America’s strategy of containment and Singapore’s efforts at a non-aligned foreign policy. But there is a deeper story. American involvement in the Vietnam War not only held back the spread of communism in Southeast Asia, but also catalysed economic and strategic cooperation between the United States and Singapore. The author argues that Singapore might not have achieved its success so rapidly without the support of the US. As the war in Vietnam raged on, Singapore became a critical refueling point, also providing ship and aircraft repair for the US military. Commercial and strategic support from the United States lifted Singapore out of the economic doom predicted for the city-state after secession from Malaysia, cessation of Indonesian trade during Konfrontasi and Britain’s military withdrawal. By considering the importance of the US’s role in Singapore’s nation-building, this book provides an important supplement to the well-trodden narrative that attributes Singapore’s success to good governance.

Book A History of Modern Singapore 1819 2005

Download or read book A History of Modern Singapore 1819 2005 written by C.M. Turnbull and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When C.M. Turnbull's A History of Singapore, 1819-1975 appeared in 1977, it quickly achieved recognition as the definitive history of Singapore. A second edition published in 1989 brought the story up to the elections held in 1988. In this fully revised edition, rewritten to take into account recent scholarship on Singapore, the author has added a chapter on Goh Chok Tong's premiership (1990-2004) and the transition to a government headed by Lee Hsien Loong. The book now ends in 2005, when the Republic of Singapore celebrated its 40th anniversary as an independent nation. Major changes occurred in the 1990s as the generation of leaders that oversaw the transition from a colony to independence stepped aside in favour of a younger generation of leaders. Their task was to shape a course that sustained the economic growth and social stability achieved by their predecessors, and they would be tested towards the end of the decade when Southeast Asia experienced a severe financial crisis. Many modern studies on Singapore focus on current affairs or very recent events and pay a great deal of attention to Singapore's successful transition from the developing to the developed world. However, younger historians are increasingly interested in other aspects of the country's past, particularly social and cultural issues. A History of Modern Singapore, 1819-2005 provides a solid foundation and an overarching framework for this research, surveying Singapore's trajectory from a small British port to a major trading and financial hub within the British Empire and finally to the modern city state that Singapore became after gaining independence in 1965.

  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Singapore written by Jason Lim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 9 August 2015, Singapore celebrated its 50th year of national independence, a milestone for the nation as it has overcome major economic, social, cultural and political challenges in a short period of time. Whilst this was a celebratory event to acknowledge the role of the People’s Action Party (PAP) government, it was also marked by national remembrance as founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew died in March 2015. This book critically reflects on Singapore’s 50 years of independence. Contributors interrogate a selected range of topics on Singapore’s history, culture and society – including the constitution, education, religion and race – and thereby facilitate a better understanding of its shared national past. Central to this book is an examination of how Singaporeans have learnt to adapt and change through PAP government policies since independence in 1965. All chapters begin their histories from that point in time and each contribution focuses either on an area that has been neglected in Singapore’s modern history or offer new perspectives on the past. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, it presents an independent and critical take on Singapore’s post-1965 history. A valuable assessment to students and researchers alike, Singapore: Negotiating State and Society, 1965-2015 is of interest to specialists in Southeast Asian history and politics.

Book Southeast Asia in China s Foreign Policy

Download or read book Southeast Asia in China s Foreign Policy written by Joseph A. Camilleri and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1975 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention will be paid not so much on China's relations with individual Southeast Asian countries, as on the role and importance of the region in China's overall foreign policy. The intention is to highlight certain general themes rather than present a detailed analysis of evolving bilateral relationships. Southeast Asia cannot of course be considered as a unified or homogenous entity. In fact, its special relevance to Chinese foreign policy lies not simply in its proximity to China, but especially in the variety of political systems and diplomatic alignments which it compromises. As a microcosm of the international system, Southeast Asia reflects China's policies and attitudes not only to the regional subsystem but also to the Third World as a whole and to the global balance of power.
