Book excerpt: Simultaneous Statistical Inference, which was published originally in 1966 by McGraw-Hill Book Company, went out of print in 1973. Since then, it has been available from University Microfilms International in xerox form. With this new edition Springer-Verlag has republished the original edition along with my review article on multiple comparisons from the December 1977 issue of the Journal of the American Statistical Association. This review article covered developments in the field from 1966 through 1976. A few minor typographical errors in the original edition have been corrected in this new edition. A new table of critical points for the studentized maximum modulus is included in this second edition as an addendum. The original edition included the table by K. C. S. Pillai and K. V. Ramachandran, which was meager but the best available at the time. This edition contains the table published in Biometrika in 1971 by G. 1. Hahn and R. W. Hendrickson, which is far more comprehensive and therefore more useful. The typing was ably handled by Wanda Edminster for the review article and Karola Decleve for the changes for the second edition. My wife, Barbara, again cheerfully assisted in the proofreading. Fred Leone kindly granted permission from the American Statistical Association to reproduce my review article. Also, Gerald Hahn, Richard Hendrickson, and, for Biometrika, David Cox graciously granted permission to reproduce the new table of the studentized maximum modulus. The sample values are to be regarded as the values of a random variable defined on some meas urable space, and the decisions made are to be functions of this random variable. Although the roots of this notion of statistical experiment extend back nearly two hundred years, the formal treatment, which involves a description of the possible decision procedures and a conscious attempt to control errors, is of much more recent origin. Building upon the work of R. A. Fisher, J. Neyman and E. S. Pearson formalized many deci sion problems associated with the testing of hypotheses. Later A. Wald gave the first completely general formulation of the problem of statisti cal experimentation and the associated decision theory. These achieve ments rested upon the fortunate fact that the foundations of probability had by then been laid bare, for it appears to be necessary that any such quantitative theory of statistics be based upon probability theory. The present state of this theory has benefited greatly from contri butions by D. Blackwell and L. LeCam whose fundamental articles expanded the mathematical theory of statistical experiments into the field of com parison of experiments. This will be the main motivation for the ap proach to the subject taken in this book.

The original edition has become very popular as a learning and reference source with easy to follow recipes and cross references for scientists in fields such as engineering, chemistry and the life sciences. Little mathematical background is required of the reader and some important topics, like the logarithm, are dealt with in the preliminaries preceding chapter one. The usefulness of the book as a reference is enhanced by a number of convenient tables and by references to other tables and methods, both in the text and in the bibliography. The English edition contains more material than the German original. I am most grateful to all who have in conversations, letters or reviews suggested improvements in or criticized earlier editions. Comments and suggestions will continue to be welcome. ODAY as in the past, statistical method is profoundly affected by T resources for numerical calculation and visual display. The main line of development of statistical methodology during the first half of this century was conditioned by, and attuned to, the mechanical desk calculator. Now statisticians may use electronic computers of various kinds in various modes, and the character of statistical science has changed accordingly. Some, but not all, modes of modern computation have a flexibility and immediacy reminiscent of the desk calculator. They preserve the virtues of the desk calculator, while immensely exceeding its scope. Prominent among these is the computer language and conversational computing system known by the initials APL. This book is addressed to statisticians. Its first aim is to interest them in using APL in their work-for statistical analysis of data, for numerical support of theoretical studies, for simulation of random processes. In Part A the language is described and illustrated with short examples of statistical calculations. Part B, presenting some more extended examples of statistical analysis of data, has also the further aim of suggesting the interplay of computing and theory that must surely henceforth be typical of the develop ment of statistical science.

During this period of time it has found significant application-exemplified best perhaps by the book Statistics of Extremes by E. J. Gumbel-as well as a rather complete theoretical development. More recently, beginning with the work of G. S. Watson, S. M. Berman, R. M. Loynes, and H. Cramer, there has been a developing interest in the extension of the theory to include, first, dependent sequences and then continuous parameter stationary processes. The early activity proceeded in two directions-the extension of general theory to certain dependent sequences (e.g., Watson and Loynes), and the beginning of a detailed theory for stationary sequences (Berman) and continuous parameter processes (Cramer) in the normal case. In recent years both lines of development have been actively pursued.

The "Theorem-Proof" format is avoided; generally, properties are "shown," rather than "proved." In most cases the ideas behind the proof of an im portant result are discussed intuitively in the text and formal details are left as an exercise for the reader. We feel that the reader will learn more from working such things out than from checking step-by-step a complete presen tation of all details.
