Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This phase of the USCG Training and Licensing project established a methodology for determining performance standards to be used in measuring simulator training effectiveness. The Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF) Shiphandling Simulator was utilized to measure the shiphandling performance of experts, i.e., pilots. Special scenarios were designed to cover a variety of training objectives relevant to shiphandling. These objectives included: approaching a harbor, responding to a rudder failure in confined waters, negotiating a 51 turn with passing ship effects, negotiating a 129 turn around a shoal with incoming traffic, and responding to a propulsion failure in the vicinity of a bridge and shoal. Fourteen pilots were run through these scenarios in order to assess the responses of shiphandling experts to the test situations. Fourteen chief mates, upgrading to the master level, were then run through the same scenarios. The chief mates were considered novice shiphandlers. This report includes a detailed description of the test scenarios, performance measures, expert and novice data, and a method for deriving performance criteria to be used in assessing the effectiveness of simulator training. Book Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability

Download or read book Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability written by M.S. Chislett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time, interactive ship simulators limped onto the scene, in the wake of flight simulators, some years ago. The maritime industries have a long history of conservatism, but this is now changing rapidly. The information age has also swept over ships and shipping, and has been taken to heart to such an extent that, for example, flight simulators now cooperate with ship simulators and import useful new concepts and methodologies. The more than 50 papers contained in this book show what and why. Although traditionally conservative, the marine world is also traditionally international and this has not changed. The papers in the book are by leading authors from all over the world and provide a detailed snap-shot of the rapidly advancing state-of-the-art, together with pointers to the future. The overall theme of MARSIM '96 and therefore also of this book is: Vessel manouevrability and marine simulation research, training and assessment, and includes original papers on topics such as bridge resource management, distant learning and simulators coupled via The Internet, virtual reality, neural networks, rudder-propeller hydrodynamics, prime mover models, squat in shallow water, and many more.
