Book In Situ Instrumentation of Scrape off Layer Plasma Simulations

Download or read book In Situ Instrumentation of Scrape off Layer Plasma Simulations written by Jure Bartol and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the possibility of performing in situ analysis for scrape-off layer plasma simulations (SOLPS). Since single SOLPS run can take up to several months and analysis proportionally long, the proposed solution promises considerable savings in analysis time and more eficient simulation runs. It alters the traditional three-step simulation approach by combining processing and post-processing into a single step. The solution extends existing B2.5 code with ParaView Catalyst co-processing library. The code uses the simulation data to create grid and attach associated field data in the VTK form that can be processed and displayed by ParaView. Co-processing is performed each time-step, thus allowing user to examine relevant data simultaneously while the simulation is running or prepare the data for post-processing in advance for the current and following runs. The implemented solution allows the user to perform analysis and debug simulation runs graphically, reduce disk usage and shorten combined simulation and analysis time without affecting simulation performance.

Book Simulation of the Scrape off Layer Plasma During a Disruption

Download or read book Simulation of the Scrape off Layer Plasma During a Disruption written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of the scrape-off layer (SOL) during a disruption in the DIII-D tokamak is modeled using the 2-D UEDGE transport code. The focus is on the thermal quench phase when most of the energy content of the discharge is rapidly transported across the magnetic separatrix where it then flows to material surfaces or is radiated. Comparisons between the simulation and an experiment on the DIII-D tokamak are made with the heat flux to the divertor plate, and temperature and density profiles at the SOL midplane. The temporal response of the separate electron and ion heat-flux components to the divertor plate is calculated. The sensitivity of the solution to assumptions of electron heat-flux models and impurity radiation is investigated.

Book Linear Analysis Tools for Edge and Scrape off Layer Plasmas

Download or read book Linear Analysis Tools for Edge and Scrape off Layer Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edge and scrape-off-layer region of a tokamak plasma is subject to well-known ideal and resistive instabilities that are driven by various curvature- and sheath-related mechanisms. While the boundary plasma is typically strongly turbulent in experiments, it is useful to have computational tools that can analyze the linear eigenmode structure, predict quantitative trends in growth rates and elucidate the underlying drive mechanisms. Furthermore, measurement of the linear growth rate of unstable modes emerging from a known, established equilibrium configuration is one of the few methods that can provide rigorous quantitative benchmarking of plasma turbulence codes. Because the tokamak edge physics community is becoming increasingly reliant on large-scale-simulation, rigorous verification and validation (V & V) of edge codes is critical. In this paper, we describe a suite of codes that can describe linearized, nonlocal (e.g. separatrix-spanning) modes in axisymmetric (realistic divertor), toroidal geometry. Results of benchmark comparisons are given for these codes, with each other and with analytical results. The inclusion of kinetic physics effects in 2DX is also discussed.

Book UEDGE and DEGAS Modeling of the DIII D Scrape off Layer Plasma Revision 1

Download or read book UEDGE and DEGAS Modeling of the DIII D Scrape off Layer Plasma Revision 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents work to develop benchmarked theoretical models of scrape-off-layer (SOL) characteristics in diverted tokamaks by comparing shot simulations using the UEDGE plasma fluid and DEGAS neutral transport codes to measurements of the DIII-D SOL plasma. The experimental data include the radial profiles of n{sub e} T{sub e}, and T{sub i}, the divertor exhaust power, the intensity of H{sub {alpha}} emission, and profiles of the radiated power. A very simple model of the anomalous perpendicular transport rates produces consistency between the calculated and measured radial profiles of the divertor power, and of the midplane densities and temperatures. Experimentally, the measured exhaust power is now 80--90% of the input power. The simulated peak power on the outer leg of the divertor floor is now within 20% of the measured power. Various sensitivities of these comparisons to model assumptions are described. Finally, these benchmarked models have been used to examine the effects of various baffle configurations for the Radiative Divertor Upgrade in DIII-D.
