Book excerpt: This work focuses on two main subjects: first, the development and validation of a robust generic performance code for industrial gas turbines (GTSI) and, second, the study of an innovative carbon dioxide/argon semi-closed cycle burning low calorific gas coming from coal gasification. GTSI will be able to simulate open, closed and semi-closed cycles at design and off-design conditions. A comprehensive thermodynamic study of the properties of the most common working fluids has been carried out, introducing the results in GTSI for a wide range of temperatures and pressures, being easy to add other gases. To make the code very general, in addition to gas turbines conventional components, such as inlet, compressor, intercooler, regenerator, combustor, turbine and exhaust system, GTSI can model evaporative intercooler, steam injection and reheat. The possibility of variable geometry was introduced in the compressor, steam injector and turbine modules. Given the high temperatures in modem and future turbines, a detailed cooling system modeling has been developed, being able to predict cooling flow requirements according to different technology levels. The control of the complete power plant has also been considered in detail, allowing the user to select among different options. The code incorporates a simple steam turbine bottoming cycle for a preliminary analysis of the combined cycle arrangement. In addition to the conventional off-design simulations it is possible to carry out studies involving engine deterioration and modification, or substitution, of components. A validation process was carried out using different gas turbine arrangements. The result has been satisfactory, although additional configurations should be examined when more data is available. As a direct application of GTSI, the conceptual design of the carbon dioxide/argon semi-closed cycle was conducted. Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis is to analyze combustion instabilities in a matrix burner. The various tools that exist for analyzing thermoacoustic instabilities are applied to the matrix burner with multiple flames. The principal goals are to determine the primary causes of combustion instabilities in the burner and to explore ways of controlling such instabilities in order to prevent damage to the burner. To achieve these goals, the stability map of the burner obtained from measurements is analyzed. This is followed by the analysis of the aerodynamics of the cold flow using CFD. Results obtained from CFD are validated with PIV and LDA results from measurements. Critical are the centerline axial velocity inside the combustion chamber and the recirculation zones on the walls of the combustion chamber and those between the various slots of the matrix burner. Cold flow simulations are followed by reactive flow simulations for both gaseous and liquid fuels. A detailed atomization model is developed for the liquid fuel case from experimental data. Two combustion models, namely, the combined finite rate/eddy dissipation model and the finite rate chemistry model are compared in the CFD simulations of combustion instabilities and validation with measurements are done. The latter is chosen over the former because it accounts for chemistry and it is not numerically dissipative. Two CFD softwares, Fluent and CFX are also compared to determine which is better at capturing acoustics. System identification using CFD is used to determine the flame transfer function and the acoustic transfer matrix. This is followed by the use of acoustic forcing and fuel modulation on the primary and pilot in order to limit the amplitude of the instabilities inside the matrix burner combustor. The 1D acoustic network is used to determine the longitudinal eigenmodes of the matrix burner. This is followed by the use of 3D finite element method (FEM) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) to determine whether a coupling exist between the fluid and structure of the matrix burner combustor and vice versa. Finally, Full harmonic analysis is performed for the rectangular combustor and the results obtained are validated with analytical results. This is followed by the 3D structure modal analysis of the full matrix burner test rig.

Book excerpt: Modern desire to have turbomachines perform over a large range of conditions raises concerns as to their susceptibility to potentially harmful vibrations induced by the unsteady flows encountered at conditions far from the design point. Machines demonstrating this type of behavior may be damaged by fatigue or be subject to catastrophic failure. Due to these concerns and the relative expense and difficulty in obtaining accurate experimental data for fluid-structure interaction in turbomachines, computations have been and will continue to be an indispensable part of the design and research efforts focused on avoiding such phenomena. While the traditional computational analysis considering a single isolated blade row can aid in understanding the mechanisms that initiate vibrations in turbomachines, study of multiple blade rows may be necessary to completely model the underlying causes of these vibrations. In the present work, the mixing-plane and sliding-mesh methods are used to simulate both steady and unsteady multi-stage transonic compressor flows. The simulations conducted here include the solution of the compressible unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) Equations. The Spalart Almaras model is used to simulate the effects of turbulence in the flow field. A modal superposition method is used to model fluid-structure interaction resulting from blade vibration. Steady flow through the NASA Stage 35 transonic compressor is computed using the mixing-plane method, and reasonable agreement is obtained with experimental data and previous computations. Steady and unsteady computations are also performed for a modern 1.5-stage transonic compressor design provided by Siemens. For this case, experiments indicate the appearance of low frequency, large amplitude flow oscillations which could potentially lead to unwanted structural vibration. In performing unsteady computations for the Siemens compressor, effects of the periodic domain size for the sliding-mesh computations are considered by doubling and tripling the initial domain size. Computations performed on the triple-sized domain show a qualitatively different character than those performed with the two smaller domains. While this result cannot guarantee that the large domain has fully resolved the unsteady flow, it provides a strong argument that the two smaller domains have not, and highlights the need to clearly identify the circumferential wavelengths expected in an unsteady multi-stage flow. Fluid-structure interaction computations for this case show very small amplitude vibrations.
