Book Boiler Dynamics and Controls

Download or read book Boiler Dynamics and Controls written by F. Paul De Mello and published by Xlibris. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boiler Dynamics and Control Course Notes Now Available By Cyrus W. Taft, P.E. Early in my career (late 1970s) at Southern Company Services I had the opportunity to attend two one-week training courses at Power Technologies, Inc. in Schenectady NY. One course was on Power Plant Performance taught by John Westcott and the other was on Boiler Dynamics and Controls taught by Paul de Mello. Both of these courses were excellent and made a significant impression on me from the standpoint of how much there was to learn and the direction I wanted my career to go. My work at Southern and later EPRI involved both plant performance and plant control but I was more involved with control systems as time went on. Consequently, I have remained in contact with Paul de Mello over the years. I have also kept my copy of the notes from both courses as a reference. Recently Paul approached me with an offer I could not refuse. He wanted to contribute his course notes to the industry and asked if ISA POWID would like to distribute them as a service to its members. I thought it was a great idea and pursued it with the POWID Board and with ISA staff. After getting a thumbs-up from both groups I scanned the course notes into pdf files which are now available for download from the ISA POWID web site (http://www.isa.org/MSTemplate.cfm?MicrositeID=538). You can download either a single large file (~18 MB) with all the chapters included or you can download individual chapters. From the Table of Contents below it is clear that the notes cover all aspects of boiler dynamics and control. You may be thinking that these notes are pretty old so they probably are not that useful today but I beg to differ. While control hardware has certainly changed drastically in the past 30 years, boiler dynamics have not. These notes provide considerable insight into boiler dynamics including physics, modeling, analysis and actual test results. They also provide a great historical perspective on the development of modern control and simulation methods When you download the notes, please look at the Front Matter which includes Paul's biography and his thoughtful Acknowledgements to colleagues. Paul is a Fellow in both ISA and IEEE and has published over 100 technical papers on power plant and power system dynamics. ISA and POWID appreciate this generous contribution to the industry by one of the true pioneers in the area of power plant dynamics and control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling and Control of Electric Power Plants focuses on the modeling and simulation of thermal and nuclear units; the methods and technologies of advanced control systems that are applied in power stations; the design and analysis of man-machine systems; and the processes in power generation. Contained in the book are the literature of contributors who have done research on design and operation of electric power plants. The book begins with the development of models of electric power plants and nuclear power plants. Simulations, analysis, and studies are conducted to test the processes and controls that are instituted in the operations of these plants. Another part of the discussion focuses on the control mechanisms that are employed in plants. These computer control systems are deemed essential in the operations of these plants. The role that computers play in plants is noted, which is particularly observed in the operation of equipment, control of conditions, and application of operational processes in these areas. Some of the areas in which modeling is carried out include electric power plants, fossil fuel power plants, boilers, and coal plants. The discussions can be a source of information to those interested in the design, control, and operation of power plants.

Book Modelling Simulation and Control of Thermal Energy Systems

Download or read book Modelling Simulation and Control of Thermal Energy Systems written by Kwang Y. Lee and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with an ever-growing resource scarcity and environmental regulations, the last 30 years have witnessed the rapid development of various renewable power sources, such as wind, tidal, and solar power generation. The variable and uncertain nature of these resources is well-known, while the utilization of power electronic converters presents new challenges for the stability of the power grid. Consequently, various control and operational strategies have been proposed and implemented by the industry and research community, with a growing requirement for flexibility and load regulation placed on conventional thermal power generation. Against this background, the modelling and control of conventional thermal engines, such as those based on diesel and gasoline, are experiencing serious obstacles when facing increasing environmental concerns. Efficient control that can fulfill the requirements of high efficiency, low pollution, and long durability is an emerging requirement. The modelling, simulation, and control of thermal energy systems are key to providing innovative and effective solutions. Through applying detailed dynamic modelling, a thorough understanding of the thermal conversion mechanism(s) can be achieved, based on which advanced control strategies can be designed to improve the performance of the thermal energy system, both in economic and environmental terms. Simulation studies and test beds are also of great significance for these research activities prior to proceeding to field tests. This Special Issue will contribute a practical and comprehensive forum for exchanging novel research ideas or empirical practices that bridge the modelling, simulation, and control of thermal energy systems. Papers that analyze particular aspects of thermal energy systems, involving, for example, conventional power plants, innovative thermal power generation, various thermal engines, thermal energy storage, and fundamental heat transfer management, on the basis of one or more of the following topics, are invited in this Special Issue: • Power plant modelling, simulation, and control; • Thermal engines; • Thermal energy control in building energy systems; • Combined heat and power (CHP) generation; • Thermal energy storage systems; • Improving thermal comfort technologies; • Optimization of complex thermal systems; • Modelling and control of thermal networks; • Thermal management of fuel cell systems; • Thermal control of solar utilization; • Heat pump control; • Heat exchanger control.

Book Modelling and Simulation of Power Generation Plants

Download or read book Modelling and Simulation of Power Generation Plants written by Andrzej W. Ordys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many large-scale processes like refineries or power generation plant are constructed using the multi-vendor system and a main co-ordinating engineering contractor. With such a methodology. the key process units are installed complete with local proprietary control systems in place. Re-assessing the so called lower level control loop design or structure is becoming less feasible or desirable. Consequently, future comp~titive gains in large-scale industrial systems will arise from the closer and optimised global integration of the process sub-units. This is one of the inherent commercial themes which motivated the research reported in this monograph. To access the efficiency and feasibility of different large-scale system designs, the traditional tool has been the global steady-state analysis and energy balance. The process industries have many such tools encapsu lated as proprietary design software. However, to obtain a vital and critical insight into global process operation a dynamic model and simulation is necessary. Over the last decade, the whole state of the art in system simulation has irrevocably changed. The Graphical User Interface (G UI) and icon based simulation approach is now standard with hardware platforms becoming more and more powerful. This immediately opens the way to some new and advanced large-scale dynamic simulation developments. For example, click-together blocks from standard or specialised libraries of process units are perfectly feasible now.

As well as a general updating of the book specific changes include: A new section on boiler control in the chapter on common control loops A major rewrite of the chapters on distillation column control and multiple single-loop control schemes The addition of new figures throughout the text Workshop instructions will be altered to suit the latest versions of HYSYS, ASPEN and DYNSIM simulation software A new solutions manual for the workshop problems

Book Performance Evaluation of Control Methods on the Water Side of Drum Boilers

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Control Methods on the Water Side of Drum Boilers written by Robert Anthony Borzellieri and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis evaluates control strategies for a drum boiler unit. Drum Boilers are a highly nonlinear system, as there are non-minimum phase shrink-and-swell effects to account for. A more complex control strategy may prove to be a better option than what is used in industry today. The goal is to showcase different control strategies on the nonlinear system given specified design constraints, from three element cascade control with a feed forward, to using a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), to the more contemporary Model Predictive Control (MPC). The process is built around the Åström-Bell non-linear complex drum-boiler model, and is extended with super-heater and turbine dynamics using other known results. The model involves simplification of controlling heat flux instead of modeling the heat transfer and fuel combustion from the air side of the boiler. The implementation of the complete system is carried out in MatLab. Simulation results are presented for the three element control method, the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) applied to a nonlinear system, and a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm to use on nonlinear systems. The simulation results are focused on automatic control operation and finding satisfactory response behaviors. The LQR and MPC approach assume full state feedback without the use of an observer. The research shows that all of the controllers can meet the design criterion, however secondary effects cause both the Three element cascade PID controller and the LQR controllers to be less desirable than the MPC approach. A heuristic trial and error approach to tuning was used in all methods due to the highly coupled nature of the system. This evaluation of the types of controllers showcasing tuning to a specified design criterion proves that the controller type is more important than optimal tuning.
