Book Assessing the Impact of Mental Category on Simulated Tank Gunnery Performance

Download or read book Assessing the Impact of Mental Category on Simulated Tank Gunnery Performance written by Scott E. Graham and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research evaluated the effects of mental ability on the gunnery performance of 19K One Station Unit Training (OSUT) soldiers. Five hundred forty-seven soldiers were given a 35-engagement tank gunnery test on the high- fidelity Institutional-Conduct of Fire Trainer (I-COFT). The I-COFT test included offensive and defensive engagements fired in normal and degraded operational modes. The primary analysis compared speed and accuracy performance as a function of mental category as derived from General Technical (GT) scores. The test scores were also used a parameter estimates in a soldier performance model based on Lanchester-type combat attrition models. OSUT soldiers with higher mental ability were faster and more accurate on the I-COFT test than were soldiers with lower mental ability. Mental category I & II soldiers hit 14% more targets than category IV soldiers and were 2 seconds faster. The effects of mental ability were relatively the same for both normal and degraded mode exercises. Analyses based on the soldier performance model indicated that category IV soldiers performed at 73% of category I & II soldiers. Keywords: Armor; Personnel selection; Gunnery prediction; Unit conduct of fire trainer; Performance(human).

Book Development of a Model Tank Gunnery Test

Download or read book Development of a Model Tank Gunnery Test written by George R. Wheaton and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was undertaken to develop a model live-fire test that can be used to evaluate tank crew proficiency in neutralizing targets. The model test takes into consideration different types of target engagements, the behaviors of the individual crew members that are required and the practical constraints associated with the use of main gun ammunition for testing purposes. Existing descriptions of M60A1A0S gunnery objectives were reviewed and updated to reflect current US Army Armor School doctrine. The revised set of objectives provided a definition of the possible ways that the tank system could neutralize targets with the 105mm gun, the coaxial machinegun and the .50 caliber machinegun. The objectives also made explicit the behaviors required on the part of individual crew members during each engagement. Given a definition of the performance domain, two steps were undertaken to aid in the selection of objectives or exercises that would constitute the model gunnery test. First, all objectives were systematically examined to identify possible groups or families of objectives that were similar to one another in terms of the underlying crew behaviors involved. Families were further analyzed to generate estimates of the extent to which performance on one gunnery objective was predictive of performance on other objectives in the same family. These results, when coupled with other considerations such as the number of main gun rounds available for testing, were then used to identify a representative sample of test engagements that would yield information about crew performance on the entire domain of gunnery objectives. Issues involved in the generation and interpretation of performance test scores were also addressed.

Book Assessment of the SIMITAR Gunnery Training Strategy Through Development of a Database of Gunnery Outcome Measures

Download or read book Assessment of the SIMITAR Gunnery Training Strategy Through Development of a Database of Gunnery Outcome Measures written by Monte D. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report assesses the impact of the Simulation in Training for Advanced Readiness (SIMITAR) compressed gunnery training strategy for Army National Guard (ARNG) armored and mechanized infantry units. This strategy emphasizes the use of state of the art training aids, devices, simulators, and simulations (TADSS) in response to challenges posed by time and range constraints experienced by ARNG combat units. Assessment entailed development of a longitudinal database of gunnery related information generated before (1993-1994) and during (1995-1997) SIMITAR strategy implementation. This information was collected from armored and mechanized infantry units from a SIMITAR test brigade and from six enhanced no SIMITAR comparison brigades. Overall, the SIMITAR training strategy was successful. Results showed that final, crew level, tank gunnery qualification on Table 8 did not differ either between the SIMITAR and comparison units, or within the SIMITAR test unit, across data collection years. Bradley Fighting Vehicle Table 8 qualification rate, however, did favor the comparison units. Perhaps more importantly, the SIMITAR strategy permitted most (94%) fully staffed SIMITAR platoons to complete gunnery Table 8 (with a 45% overall qualification rate) and enabled company and higher level maneuver training objectives to be accomplished, all within a normal 39 day yearly training calendar. Suggestions for research needed to extend SIMITAR training strategy benefits are provided."--DITC.

Book The Effects of Differences Between Practice and Test Criteria on Transfer and Retention of a Simulated Tank Gunnery Task

Download or read book The Effects of Differences Between Practice and Test Criteria on Transfer and Retention of a Simulated Tank Gunnery Task written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report evaluates manipulation of the difficulty practice criteria relative to test criteria, as a method of improving performance on track-and-shoot tasks. The experimental task required manual tracking with the Video--isc Gunnery Simulator, a tank-gunnery training device. Each of three groups of 15 male undergraduates practiced under one of three conditions in which the accuracy criterion was easier than, more difficult than, or the same as the transfer and retention test criterion. Each accuracy criterion was defined as the percentage of :he target area scored as a kill when hit. Dependent variables were target kills, aiming error, and time to fire. Results suggested a speed/accuracy trade-off: Compare with a control group that practiced and was tested with the same criterion, practice with an accuracy criterion more difficult than the test criterion yielded greater hit percentages, but slower firing times. This trend, although not statistically, significant, held for transfer and retention test scores. Practice with an easier criterion did not result in systematic differences from the performance of the control group.

Book Analyzing Tank Gunnery Engagements for Simulator Based Process Measurement

Download or read book Analyzing Tank Gunnery Engagements for Simulator Based Process Measurement written by John A. Boldovici and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automated devices can potentially measure the processes as well as results of armor crew performance. This research analyzed a sample of three tank gunnery engagements in order to (1) identify the stimuli and overt responses in a sample of gunnery tasks; (2) identify and rank-order the response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills for each duty position in the sample engagements; and (3) write prototype measurement specifications for a sample of those response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills. The decisions and overt responses of each crew member for the sampled tasks were displayed in several sets of flow diagrams. Methods for sorting overt responses into groups and for inferring enabling skills were based on three considerations: perception of initiating stimuli, recall of procedures or rules, and motor behavior. These methods yielded a four-tiered behavior hierarchy for each duty position for each engagement. Measures of crewmen's performance at all levels of the hierarchy would permit (a) troubleshooting performance sequences by backtracking scores top to bottom through the hierarchy; (b) testing sequentially from bottom to top; and (c) predicting performance in higher instructional units from scores on lower units. Measurement specifications were written for the response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills in a main gun precision engagement.
