Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the applicability of recently developed simulation-based econometric methods to the analysis of spatial price determination and integration of markets. As such a measure of market integration is developed within the context of well-known point-location competitive price equilibrium model. Two markets are said to be integrated to the extent that an excess demand shock arising in one region is transmitted to the other region. This model imposes the market efficiency (i.e., the law of one price) and explicitly accounts for the nonlinear relationship between prices and underlying variables. A critical distinction from most of the current literature is that market integration is defined and estimated as a degree rather than a binary outcome. Simulation-based estimation approach to spatial market integration can be outlined as follows: summarize the information contained in prices in an auxiliary (reduced) model and match the parameters of the auxiliary model obtained from observed data to the parameters of the same model obtained from simulated data. The particular estimation framework used is known as the extit[indirect inference] methodology. The auxiliary model is chosen as a finite order Gaussian vector auto-regression for prices. The underlying variables, autarky prices and transaction costs, are modelled as low-order vector auto-regression. Transaction costs on each link is modelled as a function of a small number of common factors. After the structural parameter estimates are obtained the measure of market integration is approximated by simple Monte Carlo integration methods. The results from a set of controlled experiments indicate that the estimation strategy works reasonably well. It is also shown that simulation-based estimation methods can be useful for the two-location switching regime models with serially correlated underlying variables.

This method permits differentiation between market integration and competitive market equilibrium and derivation of intuitive measures of intermarket tradability, competitive market equilibrium, perfect integration, segmented equilibrium, and segmented disequilibrium. One can also use these estimates to derive semiparametric measures of time-varying regime probabilities to track changing market conditions. An application to trade in soybean meal among Pacific Rim economies demonstrates the usefulness of the method.

Advancing Land Change Modeling: Opportunities and Research Requirements describes various LCM approaches, suggests guidance for their appropriate application, and makes recommendations to improve the integration of observation strategies into the models. This report provides a summary and evaluation of several modeling approaches, and their theoretical and empirical underpinnings, relative to complex land-change dynamics and processes, and identifies several opportunities for further advancing the science, data, and cyberinfrastructure involved in the LCM enterprise. In this paper an alternative methodology, the parity bounds model (PBM) is developed which uses information on transfer costs in addition to food prices to access the efficiency of spatial arbitrage. Monte Carlo experiments using data generated by a point-space spatial price equilibrium model show the PBM to be statistically reliable. An application to Philippine rice markets demonstrates that the PBM detects efficient arbitrage when other tests do not.

Book excerpt: A regime-switching model for market integration study is extended to incorporate dynamic trade flow information and risk perceptions based on an expected utility framework. An application of the extended model to the US-China soybean markets analysis shows that: One, the positive arbitrage rent uncounted-for in the extended model has been substantially reduced compared to the results from previous models. Two, dynamic trade information modeling provides more accurate information about market integration conditions. Three, inclusion of variables derived from the mean-variance expected utility function representing risk factors may help correct the weakness of the price relationship model in revealing the causes of observing or failure to observe the law of one price. Finally, US-China soybean markets are found to be integrated most of the time. However, significant deviations from efficient arbitrage are also detected.

The first part studies the sample selection and spatial models of housing price index using transaction data on detached single-family houses of two California metropolitan areas from 1990 through 2008. House prices are often spatially correlated due to shared amenities, or when the properties are viewed as close substitutes in a housing submarket. There have been many studies that address spatial correlation in the context of housing markets. However, none has used spatial models to construct housing price indexes at zip code level for the entire time period analyzed in this dissertation to the best of my knowledge. In this paper, I study a first-order autoregressive spatial model with four different weighing matrix schemes. Four sets of housing price indexes are constructed accordingly. Gatzlaff and Haurin (1997, 1998) study the sample selection problem in housing index by using Heckman's two-step method. This method, however, is generally inefficient and can cause multicollinearity problem. Also, it requires data on unsold houses in order to carry out the first-step probit regression. Maximum likelihood (ML) method can be used to estimate a truncated incidental model which allows one to correct for sample selection based on transaction data only. However, convergence problem is very prevalent in practice. In this paper I adopt Lewbel's (2007) sample selection correction method which does not require one to model or estimate the selection model, except for some very general assumptions. I then extend this method to correct for spatial correlation. In the second part, I analyze the U.S. gasoline market with a disequilibrium model that allows lagged-latent variables, endogenous prices, and panel data with fixed effects. Most existing studies (see the survey of Espey, 1998, Energy Economics) of the gasoline market assume equilibrium. In practice, however, prices do not always adjust fast enough to clear the market. Equilibrium assumptions greatly simplify statistical inference, but are very restrictive and can produce conflicting estimates. For example, econometric models of markets that assume equilibrium often produce more elastic demand price elasticity than their disequilibrium counterparts (Holt and Johnson, 1989, Review of Economics and Statistics, Oczkowski, 1998, Economics Letters). The few studies that allow disequilibrium, however, have been limited to macroeconomic time-series data without lagged-latent variables. While time series data allows one to investigate national trends, it cannot be used to identify and analyze regional differences and the role of local markets. Exclusion of the lagged-latent variables is also undesirable because such variables capture adjustment costs and inter-temporal spillovers. Simulation methods offer tractable solutions to dynamic and panel data disequilibrium models (Lee, 1997, Journal of Econometrics), but assume normally distributed errors. This paper compares estimates of price/income elasticity and excess supply/demand across time periods, regions, and model specifications, using both equilibrium and disequilibrium methods. In the equilibrium model, I compare the within group estimator with Anderson and Hsiao's first-difference 2SLS estimator. In the disequilibrium model, I extend Amemiya's 2SLS by using Newey's efficient estimator with optimal instruments.
