Book excerpt: The application of solid-state detectors of high energy resolution to x-ray spectrometry, and the increasing use of compu ters in both measurement and data evaluation, are giving a new stimulus to x-ray techniques in analytical chemistry. The Twentieth Annual Denver X-ray Conference reflects this renewed interest in several ways. The invited papers, grouped in Session I, review the charac teristics of the detectors used in the measurement of x-rays. One paper is dedicated to the detection of single ions. Although such a subject may appear to be marginal to the purposes of the Denver Conference, we must recognize the affinity of techniques applied to similar purposes. Ion probe mass spectrometry is dedicated to tasks similar to those performed by x-ray spectrometry with the electron probe microanalyzer. Scientists and technologists will see these two techniques discussed in the same meetings. The discussion of automation and programming is not limited to the two invited speakers, but extends to papers presented in more than one session. The matter of fluorescence analysis by isotope- and tube-excitation will also be of great interest to those concerned with the practical applications of x-ray techniques. The communications contained in this volume, and the lively discussions which frequently followed the presentation of papers, attest to the vitality of the subjects which are the concern of the Annual Denver X-ray Conference.

Book excerpt: The continued growth of Mössbauer effect methodology, and its virtuosity in encompassing new elements and new applications, are amply illustrated by the contents of this volume. The degree of maturity of Mössbauer spectroscopy is attested to by the increasing reliance of chemists upon Mössbauer investigation as a primary tool to be conjirmed by more "conventional" measurements. An exciting development has been the use of neutron and Cou lomb excitation techniques to produce Mössbauer Ievels. This promises to Iead Mössbauer spectroscopy toward the very desirable "universal spectroscopy" category. The prospect of extending the technique to many elements which do not possess useful precursor radionuclides is exciting indeed. While attention is being focused primarily on spectroscopy and applications, methodology is not being neglected. Another generation of drive designs is being reported, and commercial spectrometers are becoming more reliable, more competitive, and offer a reasonable selection of features at a wide range in prices. Several of the equipment companies who participated in the Third Mössbauer Methodology Symposium demonstrated approaches to Mössbauer spectrometer design (e.g., Austin Science Associates and Linear Alpha Corpora tion-Elron). A unique, new, very high countrate acceptance system demonstrated by Austin Science Associates was developed entirely in response to the need of Mössbauer spectroscopists for data acquisition rates beyond existing proportional counting capabilities. The range of proportional detectors available and a simple, inexpen sive demonstration spectrometer were exhibited by Reuter-Stokes Electronic Components, Inc.

The 20th Mid-America Symposium was sponsored by the Chicago Section in cooperation with the Niagara Frontier, Rocky Mountain, St. Louis, and Southeastern Sections of the Society of Applied Spectroscopy, and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Group. Although the Mid-America is still occasionally thought of as a regional meeting, its attendees and authors come from all parts of the United States and Canada. In addition, there were symposia on trace element analyses, silicate analyses, Mossbauer spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy for chemical analyses (ESCA), spectroscopy of materials under high pressure, and reference spectra and retrieval systems. One of the great problems of the technique, however, is the fact that only the intensity of the diffraction pattern can be measured, not its phase. The inverse problem, of determining the structure from the pattern thus contains ambiguities that must be resolved by other means. Quantitative X-ray analysis provides one way to resolve this phase problem: mixing the material in question with a material of known structure yields interferences that can be analyzed to yield the unknown phases. Invented in 1916, but little used at the time, the technique has seen a recent revival due to the development of extremely precise X-ray diffractometers coupled with powerful computers.
