Book excerpt: Sometimes in our zeal to proclaim God's message of truth and redemption, we overcomplicate it. As pastors, we sometimes believe that the greatest message is delivered in carefully planned sermons, with every nuance explained and every chapter and verse deconstructed. But what if we let the stories of Jesus speak for themselves? Author and storyteller John B. Jamison asked himself this question, and it didn't take long for him to discover that when he simply stepped back and got out of the way, his preaching began to change. In "Simple Faith?," Jamison takes us through Jesus' journey to the cross, but rather than following the traditional sermon structure, he invites us to pull up a chair and listen, to imagine with him those days when Jesus walked the earth and ushered in the kingdom of heaven. As Jamison seeks to revive the imaginations of congregations, he encourages pastors to use this resource as a tool for inspiration. The seventeen Lent/Easter, Cycle B, sermons included in this book, Jamison believes, hold powerful plots and themes that will transform in today's world as boldly as they did in ancient days. Jamison's humble approach to storytelling makes this an accessible resource to not only pastors, but also to those seeking group studies, private devotionals, and a renewed understanding of the gospel text. A few of the chapter titles included in this book are: Some Greeks (John 12:20-33) Where It Ends (John 13:1-17, 31b-35) Tangled Up in the Vines (John 15:1-8) John B. Jamisonspent twenty plus years as a full-time pastor of United Methodist congregations in Illinois. Jamison still maintains his connection to the church by serving as an interim pastor for Presbyterian congregations. The author of"Time's Up!"(CSS) and a section of "Sermons on the Second Readings, Series II, Cycle C," Jamison has also participated in the United Methodist Academy for Preaching, and he has created a variety of print, television, and radio material.Jamison is currently CEO of ImagiLearning, Inc. He is married and has one grown child and his hobbies include painting, bonsai, writing, gardening, playing guitar, and traveling.

Book The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

Download or read book The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry written by John Mark Comer and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ECPA BESTSELLER • A compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favor of a slower, simpler way of life “As someone all too familiar with ‘hurry sickness,’ I desperately needed this book.”—Scott Harrison, New York Times best-selling author of Thirst “Who am I becoming?” That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: “Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.” It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was—and continues to be—the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil. Within the pages of this book, you’ll find a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Book The Expulsive Power of a New Affection

Download or read book The Expulsive Power of a New Affection written by Thomas Chalmers and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Chalmers was a Scottish Presbyterian minister who served most of his life at St. John's parish in Glasgow—a congregation that was both the largest and the poorest congregation in the city. Known for his extensive charitable work in caring for the poor and downtrodden, Chalmers was also an astute theologian. One of his most notable works is The Expulsive Power of a New Affection, in which Chalmers inspires his readers to remove the tangles of sin through the expulsive power of a new affection—desiring God. As a result of the fall, human feelings of love are often misplaced on the creation rather than the Creator. This classic work of the faith reorients our affections toward him.

Book For the Fame of God s Name

Download or read book For the Fame of God s Name written by C. Samuel Storms and published by Crossway Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Piper has had a profound impact on countless men and women over his nearly thirty years of ministry. From his online ministry with Desiring God to his preaching ministry at Bethlehem Baptist to his writing ministry in over thirty books, his faithful service has encouraged and challenged many with God's Word. Piper's influence does not stem from his own abilities and accomplishments, but finds its source in his consistent and humble leading of others to Scripture, where the breathtaking glory of God is displayed in all its wonder. We rejoice and are changed as we encounter glorious truths about God in Piper's ministry. It is in this spirit that friends and colleagues of Piper, including Wayne Grudem, D. A. Carson, Randy Alcorn, and others, honor him by presenting essays covering topics central to his ministry: prayer, the sovereignty of God, justification, Jonathan Edwards, Christian Hedonism, and more. Pastors, scholars, and lay leaders will benefit from this tribute to a man who has labored so faithfully for the fame of God's name.

Book Holy Women Holy Men

    Book Details:
  • Author : Church Publishing,
  • Publisher : Church Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0898696372
  • Pages : 798 pages

Download or read book Holy Women Holy Men written by Church Publishing, and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration. For years the oft revised volume, Lesser Feasts and Fasts (LFF), has served parishes and individuals mark part of the holiness of each day by providing Scripture readings, a collect, a Eucharistic preface, and a narrative about those remembered on the church's calendar that day whose lives have witnessed to the grace of God. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.
