Book Liberty and Politics

Book excerpt: Liberty and Politics: Studies in Social Theory is a collection of papers that describes the conservative stance in dealing and preserving liberal and democratic values and institutions. The book deals with education, political, and social theory and presents the philosophy of Harry Eddy who was a realist, pluralist, and libertarian. One paper defines the nature of tradition as a series of acts of which the enactments of a tradition involve certain regularities of conduct. Other papers then discuss ethics as the theory of history and as an ethic of responsibility different from moral cynicism and moral futurism. One paper confronts the points of teaching sex education so as to correct sexual myths, to help pupils make appropriate decisions regarding sexuality, and to prepare them for love and responsibility. Another paper then discusses socialism, liberty, and the law where the author acknowledges the need for deeper thoughts over ideology and for acceptance of complexity over ""black and white"" thinking. The book then presents one author's reflection of The Gulag Archipelago that it offers something new and different from those of Nazism and Stalinism. The text will prove a stimulating reading for political scientists, historians, students and academicians in education and humanities, and for the general readers who like social history and political ideas.

Book Tradition and the Formation of the Talmud

Download or read book Tradition and the Formation of the Talmud written by Moulie Vidas and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tradition and the Formation of the Talmud offers a new perspective on perhaps the most important religious text of the Jewish tradition. It is widely recognized that the creators of the Talmud innovatively interpreted and changed the older traditions on which they drew. Nevertheless, it has been assumed that the ancient rabbis were committed to maintaining continuity with the past. Moulie Vidas argues on the contrary that structural features of the Talmud were designed to produce a discontinuity with tradition, and that this discontinuity was part and parcel of the rabbis' self-conception. Both this self-conception and these structural features were part of a debate within and beyond the Jewish community about the transmission of tradition. Focusing on the Babylonian Talmud, produced in the rabbinic academies of late ancient Mesopotamia, Vidas analyzes key passages to show how the Talmud's creators contrasted their own voice with that of their predecessors. He also examines Zoroastrian, Christian, and mystical Jewish sources to reconstruct the debates and wide-ranging conversations that shaped the Talmud's literary and intellectual character.

Book An Introduction to the Unitarian and Universalist Traditions

Download or read book An Introduction to the Unitarian and Universalist Traditions written by Andrea Greenwood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is a free faith expressed, organised and governed? How are diverse spiritualities and theologies made compatible? What might a religion based in reason and democracy offer today's world? This book will help the reader to understand the contemporary liberal religion of Unitarian Universalism in a historical and global context. Andrea Greenwood and Mark W. Harris challenge the view that the Unitarianism of New England is indigenous and the point from which the religion spread. Relationships between Polish radicals and the English Dissenters existed and the English radicals profoundly influenced the Unitarianism of the nascent United States. Greenwood and Harris also explore the US identity as Unitarian Universalist since a 1961 merger and its current relationship to international congregations, particularly in the context of twentieth-century expansion into Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this series is to inform both professional philosophers and a larger readership (of social and natural scientists, methodologists, mathe maticians, students, teachers, publishers, etc.) about what is going on, who's who, and who does what in contemporary philosophy and logic. PROFILES is designed to present the research activity and the results of already out standing personalities and schools and of newly emerging ones in the various fields of pillJosophy and logic. There are many Festschrift volumes dedicated to various philosophers. There is the celebrated Library of Living Philosophers edited by P. A. Schilpp whose format influenced the present enterprise. Still they can only cover very little of the contemporary philosophical scene. Faced with a tremendous expansion of philosophical information and with an almost frightening division of labor and increasing specialization we need systematic and regular ways of keeping track of what happens in the profes sion. PROFILES is intended to perform such a function. Each volume is devoted to one or several philosophers whose views and results are presented and discussed. The profiled philosopher(s) will sum marize and review his (their) own work in the main fields of Significant con tribution. This work will be discussed and evaluated by invited contributors. Relevant historical and/or biographical data, an up-to-date bibliography with short abstracts of the most important works and, whenever possible, re ferences to significant reviews and discussions will also be included.

Book Simple Stunning Wedding Etiquette

Download or read book Simple Stunning Wedding Etiquette written by Karen Bussen and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s the preferred way of wording your invitation? How should guests at the wedding dinner be seated? What do you say to people who ask to bring their (uninvited) children to the reception—or, scarier still, to your prospective mother-in-law when she picks out the World’s Ugliest Dress to wear on your big day? Brides-to-be have a lot on their minds, including making sure that everything connected with the wedding is done the “right way.” But nowadays few people are adequately schooled in the do’s and don’ts of proper etiquette—and that’s where Simple Stunning Wedding Etiquette comes to the desperately needed rescue. This newest volume in Karen Bussen’s Simple Stunning Wedding series—whose four previous books total more than 130,000 copies in print—is the perfect marriage between the timeless and the new. Bussen celebrates the beloved rituals (cake-cutting, toasts) that are well worth preserving, while dispensing with outmoded rites (the garter toss) best left by the wayside. And Bussen’s guide goes beyond other wedding etiquette handbooks by dealing sensitively with the sometimes-fraught issues (divorced parents, second marriages, blending religious traditions) so crucial to contemporary wedding planning.

Book The Joy of Parenting With Confidence

Download or read book The Joy of Parenting With Confidence written by Howard H Smith and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-06-07 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confidence in parenting? Is that a joke? Nobody has much confidence in that! But why not? When the author of this book, originally written as a gift to his grandchildren so they would not forget the "why" of how they had been parented, began teaching these concepts to young parents, and a few grandparents, the most common comment was "Why didn't I know this before?" There are plenty of books and studies on "Christian" parenting, but as one pastor reader expressed, "You must publish this. I've never seen anything like this in print before!" Then the first grandchildren to have a child said they were sharing it with their friends and also mentioned how helpful it would be in book and study form. Your servant, the author, is pleased that others might prosper from this information and will be strongly successful and confident Christian parents.Within the pages of God's revelation to mankind are so many "helps" and so much "encouragement" for the parent who follows God's design, they can't help but be successful.First, this plan has been tested by the author and his wife before being presented to you. Their discovery, it works very effectively.Second, God is in charge with this style of parenting. No guesswork about what we should do, just His magnificent leadership revealed.Third, the plan is laid out by easily understood sessions, by age, by special circumstances, and finally by God's blessing. Finally, you will be introduced to how to be the agent of God's blessing to your children, grandchildren, and to those in your sphere of influence.Be confident. Parenting is a joy, under the Lord's care!Included in the pages of this book is a complete teaching outline, with suggestions for the group leader for each session.
