Download or read book Lessons in English Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Arthur Lee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in English, Vol. 2 In a few particulars, usage has changed in recent years. Wherever this was the case, statements have been changed in the present book so as to accord with the best modern authority. In the treatment of composition, the series has been thoroughly revised and enlarged in accordance with the spirit and the method of a changed language curriculum. In grammar, the principal changes have been in the direction of simplification and abridgment. It is in the teaching of composition that the greatest ad vances in elementary English instruction have been made in recent years. Consequently, some portions of the earlier Reed and Kellogg have been eliminated, and a great deal of new material has been added. The increasing use of literature, both prose and poetry, not only as models but as a means of stirring the imagination and freeing tongue and pen, is reflected in this revision. The use of pictures, the relation of expression work to life, the harmonizing Of the book problems with the child's world, are here emphasized. It has not been forgotten, however, that every good text in this field must be in large measure a drill book. Much talking and much writing on subjects which occupy the pupil's mind - to which he gives attention in his other studies or in which he can easily be led to take an inter est - have been provided for. Book Lessons in English Vol 3

Download or read book Lessons in English Vol 3 written by Chestine Gowdy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in English, Vol. 3: Grammar and Composition The habit of Speaking clearly and correctly as well as easily and spontaneously is what every teacher would help his pupils to acquire. This book is written in the belief that this habit can be attained by most pupils only through frequent practice in the art of free and spontaneous speech combined with a discriminating study of the science of language, or grammar. Since children are not ready to undertake the study of grammar during the first years of school life, Books I and II of the gowdy-dexheimer Language Series place depend ence on varied composition exercises, models of good Speech, word studies, and ear training. In this third book of the series, Grammar and Composition, the features of the other two are retained, and a systematic study of sentence strue ture and of word forms is introduced. The special purpose of this study of grammar is to furnish definite tests for clear sentence structure and for the choice of correct word forms. As in Books I and II, composition exercises are based upon the natural interests of the pupils; thus the aim throughout is to connect the work of the special class in English with life outside of the classroom in such a way that the ideals and principles developed in class will be carried over into the ordinary speech of the pupils. Hence there have been presented at the outset the two main divisions of the sentence the complete subject and the complete predicate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English Grammar, Vol. 2 of 2: Comprehending the Principles and Rules of the Language, Illustrated by Appropriate Exercises, and a Key to the Exercises TH E principles of knowledge become most intelligible to young persons, when they are explained and inculcated by practical illustration and direction. This mode of teaching is attended with so many advantages, that it can scarcely be too much recommended, or pursued. In struction which is enlivened by pertinent examples, and in Which the pupil is exercised In reducing the rules pre scribed to practice, has a more striking effect on the mind, and is better adapted to fix the attention, and sharpen the understanding, than that which is divested of these aids, and confined to bare positions and precepts; in which it too frequently happens, that the learner has no further concern, than to read and repeat them. The t.mc and care employed in practical application, give occasion to survey the subject minutely, and in difi'erent points of view; by which it becomes more known and familiar, and produces stronger and more durable im pressions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better English, Vol. 2 of 3: For Speaking and Writing Throughout the series, much attention is given to voice training, in order to meet a growing demand for the improvement of American speech among both the native-b orn and the' foreign elements. This training begins with a few very simple exercises in the third grade, and develops into a definitely organized treat ment in the later grades. The objective of these lessons is to make the child feel from the outset that what he says to his friends will fail of its purpose, no matter how well expressed his thought may be, unless his voice is adequate, his enunciation clear, and his pronunciation correct. The emphasis in the voice work is placed on correct breathing, clear enunciation of the principal consonants and vowel sounds, and on distinct pronunciation of certain commonly neglected word endings. The exercises in voice training, and in language, both oral and written, have been successfully developed by actual experience in the classroom. In the dictionary, word-study, and vocabulary lessons included in Books II and III of the series, it is suggested that the Winston Simplified Dictionary, because of the simplicity of its definitions and its general adaptation to the needs of the youthful student, will be found especially helpful.
