Book excerpt: The mission of this book is to spread positive thoughts to others. I encourage each of you to do the same, so, whether you buy my book or not, try to give each person you meet a small part of yourself in a positive way. You will find that through giving, your life is more worth living. My alter ego is called Stargazer III. He says things that get your attention in ways that I might not. I use him a lot in this book. In this book you will find many varied short sayings that encourage you through wit and wisdom to enjoy life to the fullest. Some bits of advice are given in a totally serious and sometimes blunt way, while others are delivered with a humorous zing! In some places you will find poetry that delivers the point better. Aphorisms are my favorite tool to use. They are very short wise or witty sayings that leave an indelible print on your mind and memory. These are the shortest sayings that pack a mighty punch. For instance: "Don't fold just cause you're old!" "It's up to us to make it positive!" "A short fuse doesn't Give you much time to think! I have also included a few short stories that deliver an underlying point to ponder as you begin to live your life to the fullest. Frequently, I employ an unexpected twist to surprise the unsuspecting reader. Whether or not you are familiar with the Mayan Calendar and it's end in December 2012, It is my premise that we will survive it.

Book Inspiration with a Chuckle

Download or read book Inspiration with a Chuckle written by James W. Haworth and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-12-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jim Haworth graciously donated the first 4 books to me that hed written I was delightfully thrilled. Prior to that Id already been receiving almost daily e-mails with his ongoing wacky/witty tidbits of information. On the very rare occasional times when I didnt receive one Id become a bit depressed because I had begun to look forward to getting them nearly everyday of the week. He told me that many would just pop into his head at all times during the day and night so I found this to be intriguing. The more that these e-mails came the more they began to grow more popular with me. So many of them always seemed to ring home true representations of many types of situations that we all have happening in our lives on a normal daily basis. Just reading them on an almost daily basis actually added a sort of unexplainable lift to my usual normal routine daily life. It was good when he recognized that by placing the printed material into varying other places upon the pages as well as adding black and white pictures interspersed within the chapter titles it added much more interest to the written material placement positions within the chapter titles. As I would turn each page Id find my self trying to guess where the printed material will be placed and wondering if a black and white picture would be appearing to reinforce the particular subject matter being given? I hope with his 5th book that this kind of placement of the material on the pages as well as the pictures will continue. I feel that by having made those 2 big adjustments it has added an additional kind of joy and harmony to what he is trying to say to his readers. I feel that so many of his wacky/witty sayings will help others get through whatever kinds of problems they might be facing because they are so down to earth true sayings. All age groups will find inspiration in these sayings and this does include children as well as teenagers because they are just appealing in nature. The reader is able to easily grasp the concepts as theyre written in short statements of common sense everyday language that can be rapidly read from page to page.

Book Leaders Eat Last

Download or read book Leaders Eat Last written by Simon Sinek and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller by the acclaimed, bestselling author of Start With Why and Together is Better. Now with an expanded chapter and appendix on leading millennials, based on Simon Sinek's viral video "Millenials in the workplace" (150+ million views). Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders create environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things. In his work with organizations around the world, Simon Sinek noticed that some teams trust each other so deeply that they would literally put their lives on the line for each other. Other teams, no matter what incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting, fragmentation and failure. Why? The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps general. "Officers eat last," he said. Sinek watched as the most junior Marines ate first while the most senior Marines took their place at the back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort--even their own survival--for the good of those in their care. Too many workplaces are driven by cynicism, paranoia, and self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and cooperation because their leaders build what Sinek calls a "Circle of Safety" that separates the security inside the team from the challenges outside. Sinek illustrates his ideas with fascinating true stories that range from the military to big business, from government to investment banking.

  • Author : Josh Kaufman
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2013-06-13
  • ISBN : 1101623047
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book The First 20 Hours written by Josh Kaufman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book excerpt: Lars Kepler returns with a piercing, bestselling sequel to The Hypnotist After spellbinding audiences in The Hypnotist, Detective Inspector Joona Linna is back in The Nightmare, an internationally bestselling Swedish thriller published to critical acclaim in dozens of countries. As the Swedish newspaper Arbetarbladet put it, "The reader is ready to sell his own soul for the opportunity to read this book without interruption, in one sitting." On a summer night, police recover the body of a young woman from an abandoned pleasure boat drifting around the Stockholm archipelago. Her lungs are filled with brackish water, and the forensics team is sure that she drowned. Why, then, is the pleasure boat still afloat, and why are there no traces of water on her clothes or body? The next day, a man turns up dead in his state apartment in Stockholm, hanging from a lamp hook. All signs point to suicide, but the room has a high ceiling, and there's not a single piece of furniture around—nothing to climb on. Joona Linna begins to piece together the two mysteries, but the logistics are a mere prelude to a dizzying and dangerous course of events. At its core, the most frightening aspect of The Nightmare isn't its gruesome crimes—it's the dark psychology of its characters, who show us how blind we are to our own motives.

Book Walking With The Wounded

Download or read book Walking With The Wounded written by Mark McCrum and published by Sphere. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2011, four soldiers - each a hero of recent conflicts who suffered devastating injuries in the line of duty - set out on a challenge that even an able-bodied athlete would balk at. A two-hundred mile trek, unsupported, to the North Pole. It was the culmination of a journey that began long before, when two friends decided to mount an expedition that would demonstrate how remarkable our armed forces are and raise funds for the rehabilitation of injured service men and women. Little did they know that their idea would ultimately gain global attention, and royal endorsement. The year-long selection process was more physically and emotionally draining than anyone had anticipated. But by September 2010 the final team was set: the two founders, four wounded soldiers, a polar guide, and patron Prince Harry. Once they'd ventured inside the arctic circle they had to contend with new challenges. Pulling sleds weighing more then 100kg over vast swathes of ice rubble, pressure ridges and dangerous open water 'leads'; constant daylight; ground that could literally tear itself apart beneath them as they slept; and temperatures as low as -35 degrees. And all the time, they had to be alert for signs of the notoriously aggressive Polar Bears that roam the desolate landscape. With every step fraught with risk, the trek tested its participants' resilience to the limit. Each of these brave men tells their story here, along with that of the extraordinary expedition itself - the rigorous training, the meticulous preparation, and of course, the final, awe-inspiring journey across the ice. They returned as heroes again - proof that strength of mind can be every bit as powerful as strength of body, and an inspiration to us all.
