Download or read book Similarity Based Pattern Analysis and Recognition written by Marcello Pelillo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible text/reference presents a coherent overview of the emerging field of non-Euclidean similarity learning. The book presents a broad range of perspectives on similarity-based pattern analysis and recognition methods, from purely theoretical challenges to practical, real-world applications. The coverage includes both supervised and unsupervised learning paradigms, as well as generative and discriminative models. Topics and features: explores the origination and causes of non-Euclidean (dis)similarity measures, and how they influence the performance of traditional classification algorithms; reviews similarity measures for non-vectorial data, considering both a “kernel tailoring” approach and a strategy for learning similarities directly from training data; describes various methods for “structure-preserving” embeddings of structured data; formulates classical pattern recognition problems from a purely game-theoretic perspective; examines two large-scale biomedical imaging applications.

Book Knowledge Transfer between Computer Vision and Text Mining

Download or read book Knowledge Transfer between Computer Vision and Text Mining written by Radu Tudor Ionescu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking text/reference diverges from the traditional view that computer vision (for image analysis) and string processing (for text mining) are separate and unrelated fields of study, propounding that images and text can be treated in a similar manner for the purposes of information retrieval, extraction and classification. Highlighting the benefits of knowledge transfer between the two disciplines, the text presents a range of novel similarity-based learning (SBL) techniques founded on this approach. Topics and features: describes a variety of SBL approaches, including nearest neighbor models, local learning, kernel methods, and clustering algorithms; presents a nearest neighbor model based on a novel dissimilarity for images; discusses a novel kernel for (visual) word histograms, as well as several kernels based on a pyramid representation; introduces an approach based on string kernels for native language identification; contains links for downloading relevant open source code.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes milestones in the evolution of the DAGM Symposium become immediately visible. The Technical Committee decided to publish the symposium proceedings completely in English. As a consequence we successfully negotiated with Springer Verlag to publish in the international well accepted series “Lecture Notes in Computer Science”. The quality of the contributions convinced the editors and the lectors. Thanks to them and to the authors. We received 105 acceptable, good, and even excellent manuscripts. We selected carefully, using three reviewers for each anonymized paper, 58 talks and posters. Our 41 reviewers had a hard job evaluating and especially rejecting contributions. We are grateful for the time and effort they spent in this task. The program committee awarded prizes to the best papers. We are much obliged to the generous sponsors. We had three invited talks from outstanding colleagues, namely Bernhard Nebel (Robot Soccer – A Challenge for Cooperative Action and Perception), Thomas Lengauer (Computational Biology – An Interdisciplinary Challenge for Computational Pattern Recognition), and Nassir Navab (Medical and Industrial Augmented Reality: Challenges for Real Time Vision, Computer Graphics, and Mobile Computing). N. Navab even wrote a special paper for this conference, which is included in the proceedings. We were proud that we could convince well known experts to offer tutorials to our participants: H. P. Seidel, Univ. Saarbrücken – A Framework for the Acquisition, Processing, and Interactive Display of High Quality 3D Models; S. Heuel, Univ. Bonn – Projective Geometry for Grouping and Orientation Tasks; G. Rigoll, Univ.

Book Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets

Download or read book Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets written by Krassimir T. Atanassov and published by Physica. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning of 1983, I came across A. Kaufmann's book "Introduction to the theory of fuzzy sets" (Academic Press, New York, 1975). This was my first acquaintance with the fuzzy set theory. Then I tried to introduce a new component (which determines the degree of non-membership) in the definition of these sets and to study the properties of the new objects so defined. I defined ordinary operations as "n", "U", "+" and "." over the new sets, but I had began to look more seriously at them since April 1983, when I defined operators analogous to the modal operators of "necessity" and "possibility". The late George Gargov (7 April 1947 - 9 November 1996) is the "god father" of the sets I introduced - in fact, he has invented the name "intu itionistic fuzzy", motivated by the fact that the law of the excluded middle does not hold for them. Presently, intuitionistic fuzzy sets are an object of intensive research by scholars and scientists from over ten countries. This book is the first attempt for a more comprehensive and complete report on the intuitionistic fuzzy set theory and its more relevant applications in a variety of diverse fields. In this sense, it has also a referential character.

Book Case Based Reasoning on Images and Signals

Download or read book Case Based Reasoning on Images and Signals written by Petra Perner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the ?rst edited book that deals with the special topic of signals and images within case-based reasoning (CBR). Signal-interpreting systems are becoming increasingly popular in medical, industrial, ecological, biotechnological and many other applications. Existing statisticalandknowledge-basedtechniqueslackrobustness,accuracy,and?- ibility. New strategies are needed that can adapt to changing environmental conditions, signal variation, user needs and process requirements. Introducing CBRstrategiesintosignal-interpretingsystemscansatisfytheserequirements. CBR can be used to control the signal-processing process in all phases of a signal-interpreting system to derive information of the highest possible qu- ity. Beyond this CBR o?ers di?erent learning capabilities, for all phases of a signal-interpretingsystem,thatsatisfydi?erentneedsduringthedevelopment process of a signal-interpreting system. In the outline of this book we summarize under the term “signal” signals of 1-dimensional, 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional nature. The unique data and the necessary computation techniques require ext- ordinary case representations, similarity measures and CBR strategies to be utilised. Signalinterpretation(1D,2D,or3Dsignalinterpretation)istheprocessof mapping the numerical representation of a signal into logical representations suitable for signal descriptions. A signal-interpreting system must be able to extract symbolic features from the raw data e.g., the image (e.g., irregular structure inside the nodule, area of calci?cation, and sharp margin). This is a complex process; the signal passes through several general processing steps before the ?nal symbolic description is obtained. The structure of the book is divided into a theoretical part and into an application-oriented part.

Download or read book Unsupervised Classification written by Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clustering is an important unsupervised classification technique where data points are grouped such that points that are similar in some sense belong to the same cluster. Cluster analysis is a complex problem as a variety of similarity and dissimilarity measures exist in the literature. This is the first book focused on clustering with a particular emphasis on symmetry-based measures of similarity and metaheuristic approaches. The aim is to find a suitable grouping of the input data set so that some criteria are optimized, and using this the authors frame the clustering problem as an optimization one where the objectives to be optimized may represent different characteristics such as compactness, symmetrical compactness, separation between clusters, or connectivity within a cluster. They explain the techniques in detail and outline many detailed applications in data mining, remote sensing and brain imaging, gene expression data analysis, and face detection. The book will be useful to graduate students and researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, system science, and information technology, both as a text and as a reference book. It will also be useful to researchers and practitioners in industry working on pattern recognition, data mining, soft computing, metaheuristics, bioinformatics, remote sensing, and brain imaging.
