This book was released on 1997 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide provides silvicultural and ecological information for the management of black spruce, jack pine, and aspen within the context of sustainable forest management in Ontario. The introduction presents the legislative, philosophical, and ecological context in which the guide was developed. Section II contains an overview of the science, art, and practice of silviculture in Ontario's boreal forest. It also attempts to rationalize and present a standard set of silvicultural terms for use in forest management planning. Section III provides information about the response and adaptation of selected crop trees and competitor species to the physical environment, disturbance, and management intervention. Section IV is a bibliography of decision support tools (including manuals, guides, interpretation keys, reports, and computer programs) available for boreal Ontario. Section V demonstrates how to use the guide to build forest units, silvicultural ground rules, and silvicultural treatment packages. The appendix contains a list of plant species giving common and Latin names.

Download or read book Aspen written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information about the biology, ecology, and management of quaking aspen on the mountains and plateaus of the interior western United States, and to a lesser extent, Canada, is summarized and discussed. The biology of aspen as a tree species, community relationships in the aspen ecosystem, environments, and factors affecting aspen forests are reviewed. The resources available within and from the aspen forest type, and their past and potential uses are examined. Silvicultural methods and other approaches to managing aspen for various resources and uses are presented.
Download or read book Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen written by Canada-Alberta Partnership Agreement in Forestry and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was aimed primarily at technology tranfer, demonstrating the integration of silvicultural and harvesting techniques for protecting spruce understories in mixedwoods. This report provides details of the silvicultural component. It stresses post-harvest implications, particularly blowdown risk and growth and yield potential of released understory, and regeneration and growth of spruce, aspen, and poplar on mechanically harvested mixedwood sites. The project addresses concerns about maintaining the coniferous component of mixedwood forests and finding alternatives to clearcutting. It covers the current status of operational understory protection and some related aspects of integrated resource management.

Book excerpt: "This report examines how forest management can affect the carbon (C) balance of Ontario's forests. Ten forest management activities organized in four themes were examined: stand establishment (site preparation, planting, and vegetation management), growth enhancement (thinning, fertilization, and genetic improvement), forest protection (from forest fires, and insect and disease infestations), and harvesting (controlling the area occupied by roads, skid trails and landings, and reducing the area disturbed by harvesting)."--Document.
