Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Beautiful Rose, Like True Love, Never Fades Esther Stoltzfus considers herself to be down-to-earth, the way most Amish women do. Her marriage to her deceased husband was one borne out of practicality, and Esther sees no reason why God won't replace what He was taken away. When Esther moves to a new community with her daughter, Diana, she meets the handsome minister Isaiah Mast, who has experienced his own loss and appears to be a logical fit to complete their family. But everything changes when Esther is introduced to Joseph Zook, her widowed neighbor down the road. While tending to his treasured roses, Joseph tells stories of his passionate love for his late wife, Silvia—stories that stir a place in Esther's heart she never knew existed. What if she and Isaiah could have the kind of love Joseph and Silvia shared? In the meantime, Joseph gets his own second chance at love with the eccentric Arlene King, even as he knows he will never find another frau like his beloved Silvia. Silvia's Rose is a beautiful story filled with redemption, romance, and risking it all for the reward of true love.

Following the stirring inside her soul, Silvia leaves her faculty position as a university professor in search of peace and tranquility. She relocates to Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, renting a tiny cabin on the farm of an elderly Amish couple. Meanwhile, the couple's neighbor, eligible bachelor Joseph Zook, has been doing what he can to help out with the farmwork despite having a lame foot. He wonders if his disability is partly why he's been unable to win the heart of an Amish woman. As Silvia settles into her new surroundings, she realizes that this community's ways are exactly what she's been looking for and makes a life-changing decision to become Amish. And when Silvia meets Joseph, God plants a seed that could grow into something beautiful. Experience the incredible power of love and second chances in this charming prequel to Silvia's Rose.

Book excerpt: What happens when a former Zen Buddhist monk and his feminist wife experience an apparition of the Virgin Mary? “This book could not have come at a more auspicious time, and the message is mystical perfection, not to mention a courageous one. I adore this book.”—Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit Before a vision of a mysterious “Lady” invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets she had hidden within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries—secrets of a past age when forests were the only cathedrals and people wove rose garlands for a Mother whose loving presence was as close as the ground beneath their feet. She told Strand and Finn: The rosary is My body, and My body is the body of the world. Your body is one with that body. What cause could there be for fear? Weaving together their own remarkable story of how they came to the rosary, their discoveries about the eco-feminist wisdom at the heart of this ancient devotion, and the life-changing revelations of the Lady herself, the authors reveal an ancestral path—available to everyone, religious or not—that returns us to the powerful healing rhythms of the natural world.

Book Early Modern Trauma

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erin Peters
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2021-08
  • ISBN : 1496227492
  • Pages : 512 pages

Download or read book Early Modern Trauma written by Erin Peters and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-08 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term trauma refers to a wound or rupture that disorients, causing suffering and fear. Trauma theory has been heavily shaped by responses to modern catastrophes, and as such trauma is often seen as inherently linked to modernity. Yet psychological and cultural trauma as a result of distressing or disturbing experiences is a human phenomenon that has been recorded across time and cultures. The long seventeenth century (1598-1715) has been described as a period of almost continuous warfare, and the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries saw the development of modern slavery, colonialism, and nationalism, and witnessed plagues, floods, and significant sociopolitical, economic, and religious transformation. In Early Modern Trauma editors Erin Peters and Cynthia Richards present a variety of ways early modern contemporaries understood and narrated their experiences. Studying accounts left by those who experienced extreme events increases our understanding of the contexts in which traumatic experiences have been constructed and interpreted over time and broadens our understanding of trauma theory beyond the contemporary Euro-American context while giving invaluable insights into some of the most pressing issues of today.
