Book excerpt: Varanasi, a city that examines the intersection between religious and industrial autonomy in the context of its build environment. Being one of the only consistently inhabited cities in the world, Varanasi has a rich urban landscape that has been created over generations of religious agenda and colonial rule. Varanasi's weaving industry is just one example of the amalgamation of religion, industry and colonialism that has affected the lives of varying categories of society within the city. The textile industry accounts for 4% of India's GDP and 14% of its industrial production. Most notably the industry is the second largest, after agriculture, to provide job opportunities for the labour class. Varanasi's textile industry predominantly focuses on silk production. The city has an eight hundred year tradition in handloom silk manufacturing where for centuries, connoisseurs have appreciated the beauty of the brocades and the detail of the textile created in this region of India. Artisan weavers still continue the traditional handloom production methods passed down to them by their forefathers. Most of the hand crafted material produced is created by families and small scale communities within and around the city. As a result, the urban and rural landscape of the area has been altered to accommodate for the manufacturing of the product, textile factories in the city centre and weaving villages in rural areas. With the introduction of industrialised systems large scale silk manufacturing companies in the 90's forced artisanal weavers out of business and now several handloom villages lay idle with no source of income to maintain their business and household lives. This thesis analyses the rationale of handloom villages in Varanasi, India. It will explore the hierarchies set up within these small townships to understand the relationships handloom weavers have with the industry, the city and most importantly with each other. Subsequently this will result in a co-operative industry that is facilitated by architecture.

The overarching perspective — that there is no fixity in the meanings of Islamic symbols and that the language of Islam can be used by individuals, organizations, movements and political parties variously in religious and non-religious contexts — underlies the ethnographically rich essays that comprise this volume. Divided in three parts, the volume cumulatively presents an initial framework for the study of Muslim communities in India embedded in different regional and local contexts. The first part focuses on ethnographies of three Muslim communities (Kuchchhi Jatt, Irani Shia and Sidis) and their relationships with others, with shifting borders and frontiers; part two examines the issue of ‘caste’ of certain Muslim communities; and the third part, containing chapters on Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai and Gujarat, looks at the varied responses of Muslims as Indian citizens in regional contexts at different historical moments. Book excerpt: Firmly situated within the analytics of the political economy of a north Indian province, this book explores self-fashioning in pursuit of the modern amongst low-caste Chamars. Challenging existing accounts of national modernity in the non-West, the book argues that subaltern classes shape their own ideas about modernity by taking and rejecting from models of other classes within the same national context. While displacing the West — in its colonial and non-colonial manifestations — as the immanent comparative focus, the book puts forward a unique framework for the analysis of subaltern modernity. This builds on the entanglements between two main trajectories, both of which are viewed as the outcome of the generative impetus of modernisation in India: the first consists of the Chamar appropriation of socio-cultural distinctions forged by 19th-century Indian middle classes in their encounter with colonial modernity; the second features the Chamar subversion of high-caste ideals and practices as a result of low-caste politics initiated during the 20th century. The author contends that these conflicting trends give rise to a temporal antinomy within the Chamar politics of self-making, caught up between compulsions of a past modern and of a contemporary one. The eclectic outcome is termed as ‘retro-modernity’. While the book signals a politics of becoming whose dynamics had previously been overlooked by scholars, it simultaneously opens up novel avenues for the understanding of non-elite modern life-forms in postcolonial settings. The book will interest scholars of anthropology, South Asian studies, development studies, gender studies, political science and postcolonial studies.

While explaining the process of transformation within the industry, Abhradip Banerjee explores the uneasy relationship between technology, disjuncture, and development that has impacted the lives of this particular group of artisans for more than two decades. The novelty of this book lies in Banerjee’s approach, which allowed him to perceive and analyze the process of transition within the handloom weaving tradition of Begampur region from a more inclusive perspective, miles away from the pitfall of gross “technological determinism.” The “sociotechnical approach allowed him to gauge, analyze, and incorporate several important but neglected dimensions of this transformation, which were otherwise missing in many historiographic or empirical accounts regarding the process of industrialization, deindustrialization, and class formation in India.
