Book Silence in the Land of Logos

Download or read book Silence in the Land of Logos written by Silvia Montiglio and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Greece, the spoken word connoted power, whether in the free speech accorded to citizens or in the voice of the poet, whose song was thought to know no earthly bounds. But how did silence fit into the mental framework of a society that valued speech so highly? Here Silvia Montiglio provides the first comprehensive investigation into silence as a distinctive and meaningful phenomenon in archaic and classical Greece. Arguing that the notion of silence is not a universal given but is rather situated in a complex network of associations and values, Montiglio seeks to establish general principles for understanding silence through analyses of cultural practices, including religion, literature, and law. Unlike the silence of a Christian before an ineffable God, which signifies the uselessness of words, silence in Greek religion paradoxically expresses the power of logos--for example, during prayer and sacrifice, it serves as a shield against words that could offend the gods. Montiglio goes on to explore silence in the world of the epic hero, where words are equated with action and their absence signals paralysis or tension in power relationships. Her other examples include oratory, a practice in which citizens must balance their words with silence in very complex ways in order to show that they do not abuse their right to speak. Inquiries into lyric poetry, drama, medical writings, and historiography round out this unprecedented study, revealing silence as a force in its own right.

Book The Untameable

Download or read book The Untameable written by Marianne St-Germain and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The young girl opened her eyes and looked around hazily, as if in a dream state. She was filled with emptiness. Emptiness and dread. But why? She sat up automatically. Her head throbbed, as though she had just gotten knocked out. She seemed to be sitting on a lawn. Why was the air so scorching hot? She didn’t understand. The pale girl looked up toward the bloody night sky. There were no stars, nothing but a giant Moon the color of death, and a steadily shifting orange glow which seemed to be coming from her right . . . Illiad holds no recollection of her past—all she knows is two weeks ago she woke up beside a burning house, a matchbox in her hand. Accused of arson and of murdering the Thornes—the family of three who perished in the flames—Illiad is admitted to a facility that houses troubled girls and she is to remain there until her trial. But strange things tend to happen around her. She heals from wounds much faster than a normal human would, and she is also learning to harness some supernatural powers. Suddenly, a spirited Magician who claims to have been assigned as her protector appears, and Illiad more than ever begins to question her identity.

Book A Twilight Struggle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Kagan
  • Publisher : VNR AG
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780028740577
  • Pages : 942 pages

Download or read book A Twilight Struggle written by Robert Kagan and published by VNR AG. This book was released on 1996 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kagan contends that the Carter administration's halfhearted intervention in Nicaragua was in response to American feelings of guilt for Washington's longtime support of the Somoza dynasty. The Reagan-era intervention, on the other hand, originated in American anxiety over Soviet encroachment in the Western hemisphere. Kagan recounts how American popular aversion to the employment of U.S. military muscle in Central America led to the administration's covert support of the contras and goes on to explain how the clash between the Reagan White House and Congress over "freedom fighter" funding led to the Iran-contra affair in 1987. Although the surprising electoral victory of Violeta Chamorro over the Sandinistas was widely recognized as a success for American policy, the U.S. remains caught in a continuous cycle of intervention and withdrawal in Nicaragua, according to Kagan. As a member of the State Department's Policy Planning Staff, Kagan was a direct participant in many of the events described in this authoritative and definitive account of U.S."--Publisher's description.

Book A Mouth Full of Serenity and Fireflies

Download or read book A Mouth Full of Serenity and Fireflies written by Rebel Waste and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-08-30 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fireflies is a metaphor. The synapses of dogs is a metaphor. The book is wrought (or rot) with metaphors, for the mind to then live til death, in search of fireflies. Everything! The insanity of seeing the world as it always is, before and after, now and then. I want to smash the jar, like a child's piggy bank of dreams! The black hole jar is an open ended, never ending metaphor. Metaphors make writing more than what it is, and makes writing what it will be. It is why we can reach out and take hold of nothing, but open our palms and behold everything. Each page breeds three. So read to read, or read to breed.
