Book excerpt: Now in paperback! From the author of the Navy SEALs Oral History series-an intimate look at the world's most efficient and deadly warriors. Snipers have a rich history. This fascinating book follows their tasks and techniques from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars through both World Wars, to the Korean War and Vietnam-the genesis of modern sniping-to the current conflicts in the Middle East. Also, readers will see how sniping has evolved on the civilian side in law enforcement. Readers will learn about the tools of the trade, but most importantly, they will hear from the experts themselves: military snipers, as well as civilian police and SWAT snipers. Capturing the suspense and action of the hunt, the words of these men draw readers into the close-knit, little-known world of men who need only one bullet to get the job done.

Download or read book Inside the Crosshairs written by Col. Michael Lee Lanning and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The American sniper could be regarded as the greatest all-around rifleman the world has ever known. . . ." At the start of the war in Vietnam, the United States had no snipers; by the end of the war, Marine and army precision marksmen had killed more than 10,000 NVA and VC soldiers--the equivalent of an entire division--at the cost of under 20,000 bullets, proving that long-range shooters still had a place in the battlefield. Now noted military historian Michael Lee Lanning shows how U.S. snipers in Vietnam--combining modern technology in weapons, ammunition, and telescopes--used the experience and traditions of centuries of expert shooters to perfect their craft. To provide insight into the use of American snipers in Vietnam, Lanning interviewed men with combat trigger time, as well as their instructors, the founders of the Marine and U.S. Army sniper programs, and the generals to whom they reported. Backed by hard information and firsthand accounts, the author demonstrates how the skills these one-shot killers honed in the jungles of Vietnam provided an indelible legacy that helped save American lives in Grenada, the Gulf War, and Somalia and continues to this day with American troops in Bosnia.

Book Silencing Heterochromatin and DNA Double Strand Break Repair

Download or read book Silencing Heterochromatin and DNA Double Strand Break Repair written by Kevin D. Mills and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of DNA repair is vast and advancing rapidly. Recent investigations have begun to focus on the involvement of chromatin in the repair of broken DNA. Although I have no doubt that many breakthroughs in our understanding of chromatin, chromatin regulation, and DNA repair lie in our future, presently this is a new line in inquiry. As such there are many, many unanswered questions. Indeed, most of the correct questions have probably not even been asked yet. Here I have attempted to present a review of some of the current body of knowledge that may prove relevant to understanding the role of chromatin in DNA repair. Because the volume of research, and the relevant findings, come from a staggering array of labs, systems, and ideas I have focused primarily on findings developed from the study of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Unfortunately, this means that I have left out a great deal of information. It is my hope, however, that the information I do detail, particularly in Chapter 1, will give a flavor for the scope of the problem and perhaps highlight some of the interesting directions this field is taking, or may one day take. I would also point out that the primary research that is presented herein is not in any way meant to represent the comprehensive scope of research being performed. To understand DNA repair will require investigation from innumerable labs, performed by innumerable researchers, moving in unexpected directions.

Book The Involvement of EU Law in Private Law Relationships

Download or read book The Involvement of EU Law in Private Law Relationships written by Dorota Leczykiewicz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The involvement of the EU in regulating private conduct and relationships between individuals is increasing. As a result, EU law affects the scope of private autonomy in ever wider contexts, sparking tensions with fundamental concepts of national private law systems. This volume offers a descriptive and normative account of the involvement of EU law in private law relationships. The recurring theme in the collected papers is the scope of policy objectives which are apt to legitimise the European Union's as yet unsystematic tendency to serve as a source of restrictions of private autonomy. The nature and purpose of the involvement of European Union law in private law relationships is investigated by the authors from both the substantive and the constitutional perspective. The papers look at such sectors regulating private law relationships as consumer law, labour law, competition law, equal treatment law and the law of remedies. While focusing on private law relationships the authors investigate more general concepts of EU law, such as the Internal Market freedoms and general principles of law, and the different modes of ensuring the effective application of EU secondary law.
