Book excerpt: When no one can see the cry for help Undercover operatives Sid Hackbirn and Lisa Wycherly face many of the usual problems of newlywed parents, including raising their son, Nick, a pre-teen dealing with a pack of girls chasing him and an exploding appetite. But they also get a more ticklish job than usual - protecting one of the engineers working on a satellite with some new capabilities. What makes it ticklish is that the engineer is Sid and Lisa’s good friend Esther Nguyen, and not only do they need to protect her from anti-nuke protesters and even the KGB, Sid and Lisa need to draft Esther and her almost husband Frank into the ultra top-secret Operation Quickline, and then train them. Add Sid’s aunt suddenly moving to Los Angeles, that their good friend’s wife is dying, and a host of parents who can’t deal with Sid, Lisa, and Nick all having different last names, and it’s no wonder Lisa finds adjusting to being a wife and mother harder than she imagined. And she’s not the only one quietly screaming for help.

Book excerpt: Back in the car and heading to Joe’s place, Joe noticed a Bible sitting between them in the seat. Grace detected his glance: “Do you read the Good Book often?” she asked Joe. “No ma’am; not since I was a little boy,” Joe replied through a yawn. “Well, if you don’t have one you can have mine,” she told him with a cheery grin. Joe was bemused. “No, that’s okay. I have one. My mom got it for me when I was six years old.” Grace looked at him. “And you still have it? That’s amazing.” Joe didn’t understand what was so amazing about it. “It’s in a box somewhere.” They were pulling into the apartment complex as Grace said, “I learn something new about God every time I read the Word.” Undoing his seatbelt Joe mumbled, “I know all I need to know about God.” Joe Morgan wakes up from nightmares about the day in church when he was ten years old and the pastor yelled about a sin that can’t be forgiven. Since then, he has left the idea of God far behind, much more concerned with taking care of his self than with running after a Being who damns His creatures to hell. Joe lives the small town life, going to the same bar after work every week with his friend Ray and holding back his feelings for his coworker, Nicole. He’s too caught up in the relationship they already have to risk pushing it into romance. What Joe doesn’t know is that everything is about to change—what he thinks about Nicole, about himself and most of all, about God. How can a stolen truck and two men in the hospital change Joe’s humdrum life? Read Tortured Soul to find out.

Book excerpt: Those interested in the history of the infamous Younger Brothers of Missouri know eldest brother Cole’s story. Or at least they think they do. Cole told it enough times. Yet his autobiography, his dozens of interviews, and the stories he told to his friends and family members unfortunately tell a story quite different from researched history of the same times and events. John and Bob died young and never had the opportunity to tell their side of it all. And brother Jim remained silent. Until now. Tortured Soul: Jim Younger in His Own Words finally reveals Jim’s memories, thoughts, and opinions. Although Jim’s recollections are also mired in selective memories and a certain distortion brought about by the passage of time, a damaged psyche, and a need to protect himself and those he loved, the story Jim tells is based on his history and his desire to set Cole’s tall tales in their proper perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan McCracken was deeply affected by his wife Elizabeth’s death in 2003. They had been married for over forty years, and in her memory he began to write about their life together as an attempt to find solace and comfort. 'Harmony', a word which is inscribed inside Elizabeth’s wedding ring, was his first sonnet. This grew to a collection of fifty, amongst fourteen other poems of varied styles and lengths, and so Sequestered in Harmony was created. There is a sadness that runs throughout many of Alan’s poems, but even the blackest of them ends on a hopeful note. He finds beauty in the natural world, focusing on happier times, from his and his wife's first meeting, to holidays on the beach, his hitch-hiking and, in later years, driving home to her. These all point back to the book’s title, which indicates how the couple felt, cosy and sheltered in their own world together. "In the darkest times after Elizabeth’s death, I wrote a few poems, but then remembered that she used to suggest lightheartedly that I might write her a sonnet. I didn’t, I couldn’t; not then. Now it seemed appropriate to write sonnets in her memory," the author comments on his poetic inspiration.
