Book The Apocalypse of Silence

Download or read book The Apocalypse of Silence written by William P. Haynes and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2005-02-21 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semjaza: The Apocalypse of Silence is the second book in the CURSE OF MESPHISTO'S SEED trilogy. The apocalypse chronicles the death of Elliott and the birth of Lifthrasir. It reveals the plans of Mesphisto, the trial of Mark Talbot and Josh Riley and the rise of The Cult of the Wayward Souls as the new age religion of choice. Reviewers called book one a fantastic apocalyptic thriller, a hellish battle between good and evil, a haunting journey. The journey truly begins in book two with its jinns, doppelgangers, necromancy, Roman gods and a certain devil named Michael Orcus with a penchant for beautiful women. The landscapes of hell are more brutal, the action more furious and this time only Nox, the goddess of death and her acolyte, the black cat can decide the final outcome.

Download or read book From zero to hero written by Wanda Montanelli and published by Tektime. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In daily encounters on TV, press editorials and news reports, the only reason seeming to compel insiders is their circulation or audience. Everyone else turns a blind eye to it. Nobody cares about knowing that the higher the audience, the more links to Twitter there’ll be or that the more likes on Facebook there’ll be, the seeds of gratuitous violence are more effectively sown. This is called emulation or, in the psychopathology of communication, the “Werther effect”. Our society is full of frustrated individuals who ascribe their own failings to the world around them and it may be the case that some marginalised people regard themselves as being rather low on the social scale and therefore choose to give themselves hero status, worthy of the newspaper front pages. Consequently, they may happen to take action by seizing a firearm in search of verification of them transforming their empty existence into stuff of legend, giving enough to take about for days, months and years to come. Such a breakthrough, from zero to hero! Translator: Rhys Llwyd PUBLISHER: TEKTIME

Book The Fast

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Oakes
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2024-02-13
  • ISBN : 1668017431
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book The Fast written by John Oakes and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With fasting at an all-time high in popularity, here is the first deep exploration into the surprising history and science behind the practice—essential to many religions and philosophies. Whether for philosophical, political, or health-related reasons, fasting marks a departure from daily routine. It involves doing less but doing less in a radical way. Based on extensive historical, scientific, and cultural research and reporting, The Fast illuminates the numerous facets of this act of self-deprivation. John Oakes interviews doctors, spiritual leaders, activists, and others who guide him through this practice—and embarks on fasts of his own—to deliver a book that supplies readers curious about fasting with profound new understanding, appreciation, and inspiration. In recent years, fasting has become increasingly popular for a variety of reasons—from health advocates who see fasting as a method to lose weight or to detox, to the faithful who fast in prayer, to seekers pursuing mindfulness, to activists using hunger strikes as an effective means of peaceful protest. Notable fasters include Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Gandhi, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Cesar Chavez, and a long list of others who have drawn on its power over the ages and across borders and cultures. The Fast looks at the complex science behind the jaw-dropping biological phenomena that occur inside the human body when we fast. Metabolic switching induced by fasting can prompt repair and renewal down to the molecular level; such fasting can provide benefits for those suffering from obesity and diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and more. Prolonged fasting can serve both to reinvigorate the immune system and to protect it against damage. Beyond the physical experience, fasting can be a great collective unifier, an instant leveler that connects us purely by virtue of being an act accessible to all, and it has been adopted by religions and political movements all over the world for millennia. Fasting is central to holy seasons and days such as Lent (Christianity), Ramadan (Islam), Yom Kippur (Judaism), Uposatha (Buddhism), and Ekadashi (Hinduism). On an individual level, devout ascetics who master self-deprivation to an extreme are believed to be closer to the divine, ascending to enlightenment or even sainthood. Through the ages, fasting in the name of justice—a hunger strike—has signaled purity of intent and action. It’s a tactic that demands commitment, serves to highlight the cruelty of those in authority, and appeals to shared values: that we’re united by a common humanity and we deserve to be heard. Advocates who have waged hunger strikes include Gandhi in India, Bobby Sands in Ireland, and the Taxi Workers Alliance in New York City. Fasting reminds us of the virtues of holding back, of not consuming all that we can. Ultimately, this book shows us that fasting is about much more than food: it is about taking control of your life in new and empowering ways and reconsidering your place in the world.

Book The Art of Silence and Human Behaviour

Download or read book The Art of Silence and Human Behaviour written by Theodor Itten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the phenomenon of silence in relation to human behaviour from multiple perspectives, drawing on psychological and cultural-philosophical ideas to create new, surprising connections between silence, quiet and rest. Silence and being quiet are present in everyday life and in politics, but why do we talk about it so rarely? Silence can be cathartic and peaceful, but equally oppressive and unbearable. In the form of communication, we keep secrets to protect ourselves and others, but on the other hand subjects can be silenced with dictatorial posturing - a communicative display of power – and something can be literally ‘hushed up’ that needs to be disclosed. In unique and engaging style, Theodor Itten explores the multi-layered internal conversation on silence in relation to the self and emotions, demonstrating why it is sometimes necessary in our modern society. Describing and analyzing human behaviour in relation to silence, the book also draws on psychoanalytic ideas by outlining the power of silence in processing our emotions and relationships and hiding innermost feelings. With rich narrative signposts providing thought-provoking and amusing insights, and interpersonal communication examined in relation to everyday life, this is fascinating reading for students and academics in psychology, philosophy, cultural studies, and related areas.

Book The Unharnessed World

  • Author : Cindy Gabrielle
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing

Download or read book The Unharnessed World written by Cindy Gabrielle and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though New Zealand author Janet Frame (1924–2004) lived at a time of growing dissatisfaction with European cultural models, and though her (auto-)biography, fiction and letters all testify to the fact that a direct encounter between herself and Buddhism occurred, her work has, so far, never been examined from the vantage point of its indebtedness to Buddhism. It is of the utmost significance, however, that a Buddhist navigation of Frame’s texts should shed fresh light on large segments of the Framean corpus which have tended to remain obdurately mysterious. This includes passages centering on such themes as the existence of a non-dual world or a character’s sudden embrace of a non-ego-like self. Of equal significance is the conclusion one then draws that this unharnessed world which human beings are often unable to embrace has always been right under their nose, for, whenever the aspect of the intellect that filters perceptions into mutually excluding categories fails to function, he or she finds a place of subjective arrival in, and sees, this supposedly unknowable ‘beyond’. Thus, possibly against the grain of mainstream criticism, this study argues that Janet Frame constantly seeks ways through which the infinite and the Other can be approached, though not corrupted, by the perceiving self, and that she found in the Buddhist epistemology a pathway towards evoking such alterity.

Book J Krishnamurti and Sant Kabir

Download or read book J Krishnamurti and Sant Kabir written by Rohit Mehta and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1990 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Kabir to Krishnamurti is a far cry. For, they are separated one from the other by over five centuries. But quantitative measurement of this distance has a qualitative aspect which cannot be measured in any time-scale. Two great seers lived in two completely different worlds-with no comparison between the two. And yet they expressed their thoughts and experience not only in a similar language but almost in identical terms. In these two streams of thought represented by Kabir and Krishnaji, the authors note a fascinating parallelism. These streams run parallel to each other-and yet they meet from time to time-at the intersections between the two approaches to life. J. Krishnamurti and Sant Kabir focuses on these meeting points between the two approaches to life. The book also presents the intersections between the writings and sayings of Kabir and Krishnaji.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shy boy Amadeo reigns supreme at table football in his local café. Taking on all comers he is one of “the unbeatables” with his loyal team of tiny foosballers. But there's another “unbeatable” in town. Aggrieved by his only ever defeat at the hands of Amadeo in a foosball match when they were kids, Flash the town bully returns to seek revenge. Not only does he destroy the foosball table, but he challenges Amadeo to a game of actual football. Amadeo has never played real football - and Flash, with his insatiable quest for glory, has subsequently risen to become the world's most famous soccer star. With the future of the village at stake and his foosballers scattered, the situation looks hopeless for Amadeo. Unless he can recruit the help of his eccentric fellow villagers and the girl he loves, Lara, to take on the world’s best football team captained by his nemesis Flash. And unless the foossballers can be reunited. “It’ll be like Barcelona against a non-league team with an injury crisis,” predicts Lara. What nobody predicts, however, is how Amadeo’s foosballers will affect the game… The Unbeatables novel is the ultimate fantasy football story. Expanding upon the original movie, the novel includes additional adventures and characters. Written for young adults (and not so young adults), the book is a scintillating, action-packed 90 minutes of end-to-end incident, comedic flair, goalmouth scrambles and dubious off the ball challenges on the ethos of the modern game. Praise for The Unbeatables: “The witty dialogue and banter makes for some very funny moments, while the digs at the excesses of modern footballers will ring true to followers of the Beautiful Game.” - Radio Times “The Unbeatables is great fun for young and old.” - Daily Express “Nice jokes at the expense of FIFA, overpaid prima donna footballers and slimy agents.” - Daily Mail “Lively and consistently funny.” - Irish Times “An utterly charming gem. Deft one-liners. Back of the net!” - Irish Independent
