Owing to the suspension of that valuable work, and at the suggestion of its accomplished editor, the present sketch appears in a separate volume. Book Commanding Old Ironsides

Download or read book Commanding Old Ironsides written by William M. Fowler Jr. and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silas Talbot’s life illuminates his time—not with greater brightness than the lives of his more famous contemporaries, but with perhaps broader range and greater insight into the experiences and circumstances of a plain citizen of the new republic—a citizen whose bravery and energy helped to create it. Silas Talbot was a farmer’s son who went to sea, learned the building trades, saved and invested his money wisely, married well several times, fought as a Rhode Island soldier in the Revolutionary War, became a lieutenant colonel, served with courage and competence, became a privateer and a prisoner-of-war in the conflict at sea, speculated in western lands, was elected to the New York State Legislature and the U.S. Congress, represented the interests of American sailors forced to serve in Britain’s navy, and was appointed second commanding officer of the frigate USS Constitution. In a full and energetic life of sixty-two years he met and served famous leaders, including Washington, Adams, Hamilton, and Lafayette; raised a family; advanced in the social, political, and business circles of New York and Rhode Island; and was, as the author notes, “among the first of the new citizens of the new republic to seize its gifts.”

Download or read book Silas Talbot to John Adams Declining the Commission of Captain of the Navy 3 July 1799 written by Silas Talbot and published by . This book was released on 1799 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talbot thanks President Adams for receiving the commission of Captain of the Navy and also another to Cotton Thayer as Second Lt. of Marines. Talbot has difficulty accepting this commission because he fears he will be a junior officer to someone who does not deserve to be ranked ahead of him, citing [John] Barry, [Samuel] Nicolson, and [Thomas] Truxton. I consider a commission only as a certificate or evidence of an appointment, why then have I not untill this day been furnished with the Evidence of my first appointment under the present Government as well, or instead of the Letter. Talbot does not have confidence in the Navy Department. Talbot respectfully declines the commission and wishes to retire from the service. Noted at the top as a copy, though written in Talbot's hand and signed by him. Originally enclosed with GLC02437.07282.
