Book Early Korean Literature

Download or read book Early Korean Literature written by David McCann and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preeminent scholar and translator David R. McCann presents an anthology of his own translations of works ranging across the major genres and authors of Korean writing—stories, legends, poems, historical vignettes, and other works—and a set of critical essays on major themes. A brief history of traditional Korean literature orients the reader to the historical context of the writings, thus bringing into focus this rich literary tradition. The anthology of translations begins with the Samguk sagi, or History of the Three Kingdoms, written in 1145, and ends with "The Story of Master Hô," written in the late 1700s. Three exploratory essays of particular subtlety and lucidity raise interpretive and comparative issues that provide a creative, sophisticated framework for approaching the selections.

Newbery medalist Linda Sue Park has taken the brief biblical references to the three as the starting point for a new story. In it we meet a boy who is learning his father’s trade; a man who gathers resin from certain trees; a merchant in the marketplace; and three strangers in brightly colored robes who are shopping for a gift for a baby. Illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline with exquisite paintings, this simple, moving tale of ordinary people involved in an extraordinary event brings new resonance to the well-known gift list of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Tree-ear is an orphan boy in a 12th-century Korean village renowned for its ceramics. When he accidentally breaks a delicate piece of pottery, he volunteers to work to pay for the damage. Putting aside his own dreams, Tree-ear resolves to serve the master potter by embarking on a difficult and dangerous journey, little knowing that it will change his life forever. "Despite the odds against him, Tree-ear becomes courageous, brave and selfless, a hero as enduring as the porcelain Park so lovingly describes." (New York Times) “Intrigues, danger, and a strong focus on doing what is right turn a simple story into a compelling read. A timeless jewel.” (Kirkus starred review) *A broken piece of pottery sets events in motion as an orphan struggles to pay off his debt to a master potter. This finely crafted novel brings 12th-century Korea and these indelible characters to life." (School Library Journal starred review) "Tree-ear's determination and bravery in pursuing his dream of becoming a potter takes readers on a literary journey that demonstrates how courage, honor and perseverance can overcome great odds and bring great happiness. Park effectively conveys 12th century Korea in this masterful piece of historical fiction." (Kathleen Odean, chair of the Newbery Award Selection Committee)

Book The Firekeeper s Son

Download or read book The Firekeeper s Son written by Linda Sue Park and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2009-04-20 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Korea in the early 1800s, news from the countryside reached the king by means of signal fires. On one mountaintop after another, a fire was lit when all was well. If the king did not see a fire, that meant trouble, and he would send out his army. Linda Sue Park's first picture book for Clarion is about Sang-hee, son of the village firekeeper. When his father is unable to light the fire one night, young Sang-hee must take his place. Sang-hee knows how important it is for the fire to be lit-but he wishes that he could see soldiers . . . just once. Mountains, firelight and shadow, and Sunhee's struggle with a hard choice are rendered in radiant paintings, which tell their own story of a turning point in a child's life.

Download or read book Sijo Bruce Lee written by Gianfranco Mento and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not concerned with Jeet Kune Do. That is the final product of Sijo Bruce Lee's studies. He did secret researches that he did not want to divulge, because he saw it fit to conceal the sources of his knowledge that led him to the creation of his own personal system. There are many excellent books on the market that treat Jeet Kune Do in terms of fighting, scientific and philosophical, but this book is not about that. Instead, this book concerns Sijo Bruce Lee's Gung Fu root. This is, therefore, dedicated to the true connoisseurs of Gung Fu. For this, I did not limit my research to the final aspect of Jeet Kune Do, but I have also investigated, studied, and reported the stories of the different lineages that Sijo Bruce studied in books or with masters; all experiences that he did not reveal but took part in his culture and his martial background. This book is the result of my many years of practice and analyses on Sijo Bruce's martial system, which I have acquired a thorough framework that flows from anthropological research from documents, translations of Chinese manuscripts, old Chinese and American magazine articles, photographs, drawings, and even interviews and news reports from those who knew him personally. I will treat all of these as part of a whole, telling Sijo Bruce Lee's experiences and noting the sources of information. Moreover, regarding some of his original photos taken fifty years ago, I wanted to make a living and colorful image by changing the background of the pictures, giving the reader a heady Bruce.
