Book Signal to Noise Ratio and Central Limit Theorem Considerations in Non Gaussian Detection

Download or read book Signal to Noise Ratio and Central Limit Theorem Considerations in Non Gaussian Detection written by Douglas Warren and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generalized signal-to-noise ratio for detectors is defined and its relationship to quality of detection is investigated. Specific attention is given to log-likelihood ratio detectors. The question is discussed as to whether a Central Limit Theorem approximation for the output of the detector gives results which are close to those of the actual detector and is illustrated with examples. Keywords: Signal detection; Non-Gaussian noise; Signal-to-noise ratio; Central limit theorem.

Book Topics in Non Gaussian Signal Processing

Download or read book Topics in Non Gaussian Signal Processing written by Edward J. Wegman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Gaussian Signal Processing is a child of a technological push. It is evident that we are moving from an era of simple signal processing with relatively primitive electronic cir cuits to one in which digital processing systems, in a combined hardware-software configura. tion, are quite capable of implementing advanced mathematical and statistical procedures. Moreover, as these processing techniques become more sophisticated and powerful, the sharper resolution of the resulting system brings into question the classic distributional assumptions of Gaussianity for both noise and signal processes. This in turn opens the door to a fundamental reexamination of structure and inference methods for non-Gaussian sto chastic processes together with the application of such processes as models in the context of filtering, estimation, detection and signal extraction. Based on the premise that such a fun damental reexamination was timely, in 1981 the Office of Naval Research initiated a research effort in Non-Gaussian Signal Processing under the Selected Research Opportunities Program.

Book Detection in Incompletely Characterized Colored Non Gaussian Noise Via Parametric Modeling

Download or read book Detection in Incompletely Characterized Colored Non Gaussian Noise Via Parametric Modeling written by Steven Kay and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of detecting a signal known except for amplitude in incompletely characterized colored non gaussian noise is addressed. The problem is formulated as a testing of composite hypotheses using parametric models for the statistical behavior of the noise. A generalized likelihood ratio test is employed. It is shown that for a symmetric noise probability density function the detection performance is asymptotically equivalent to that obtained for a detector designed with a priori knowledge of the noise parameters. Non gaussian distributions of the noise are found to be more favorable for the purpose of detection as compared to the Gaussian distribution. Keywords: Non gaussian processes; Generalized likelihood ratio tests; Uniformly most powerful tests; Prewhitener correlator; Autoregressive processes; Signal to noise ratio.

Book Non Gaussian and Multivariate Noise Models for Signal Detection

Download or read book Non Gaussian and Multivariate Noise Models for Signal Detection written by Andrew B. Martinez and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the problems of detecting a known signal in non-Gaussian or dependent noise. Although likelihood ration (LR) detectors are discussed, primary attention is paid to asymptotic detector performance, and therefore to maximum efficacy or locally optimal (LO) detectors. The detectors considered consist of a nonlinearity followed by a filter and a threshold comparator. The asymptotic performance of three common suboptimal detectors is considered for several families of noise densities as the input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) varies. Contours of equal detector performance are plotted allowing the relative utility of the detectors to be assessed. A method of designing suboptimal detector nonlinearities is presented. A suboptimal nonlinearity is chosen, and the family of densities for which it is locally optimal is found. A member of this family is then fitted to the observed noise, and the corresponding detector is used. When the nonlinearity is a rational function, the Pearson family of densities results.

Book Statistically Computationally Efficient Detection in Incompletely Characterized Colored Non Gaussian Noise Via Parametric Modeling

Download or read book Statistically Computationally Efficient Detection in Incompletely Characterized Colored Non Gaussian Noise Via Parametric Modeling written by Steven Kay and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generalized likelihood ratio test is known to be able to reliably detect a signal known except for amplitude incompletely characterized colored non-gaussian noise, although it is computationally intensive. A Rao efficient score test shares all the asymptotic properties of the generalized likelihood ratio test for large data records and small signal amplitudes. Its detection performance is asymptotically equivalent to that obtained for a similar detector designed with a priori knowledge of the unknown noise parameters. Computer simulations of the performance of the Rao detector support the theoretical results. A Rao detector built with the knowledge of the true form of the noise PDF is shown to significantly outperform a detector which assumes the noise to be Gaussian. Keywords: Non-gaussian processes; Generalized likelihood ratio test; Rao efficient score test; Chi square distribution; Autoregressive modeling; Maximum likelihood estimator; Signal to noise ratio.
