Résumé : Une hystérique ne buvait plus depuis qu'elle avait vu un chien boire dans un verre, ce qu'elle n'avoua que sous hypnose. Avec d'autres exemples, Freud dit que les hystériques souffrent de réminiscences. Sans l'hypnose, l'hystérique ne se souvient pas des scènes ayant causé ses troubles. Puis Freud se limite à la mise en confiance sans hypnose pour que le conscient ne refoule plus l'inconscient : c'est le principe de la psychanalyse. On peut aussi analyser les rêves. Les troubles sexuels, y compris enfantins, sont la cause majeure de névrose.
