Book Women and the Amistad Connection

Download or read book Women and the Amistad Connection written by Filomina Chioma Steady and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and the Amistad Connection: Sierra Leone Krio Society is a welcome relief from reports of the ten-year rebel war in Sierra Leone and gives a glimpse of life in a part of Sierra Leone during its more customary periods of peace. It is an important and timely record of a people whose lives may have been changed forever. This rather unique group, the Krios of Sierra Leone is presented from a perspective in which women are central. It uses an indigenous model and allows the women to "speak for themselves" while refraining from imposing extemal theoretical and other explanatory models. The study examines the history and development of a pluri-cultural society representing African, European and New World influences which resulted from the repatriation to Freetown, Sierra Leone of freed slaves from different parts of the world. The role of women in maintaining the kinship and household structure; life cycle events and rituals are central to understanding this complex and dynamic society. The study deals with the history and current situation of women and their informal and formal associations including their world view. It argues that Krio society is both "sui generis" and "diasporic" because of its cultural links to both Africa and to the African Diaspora. It examines the elements that constitute a rather unique Krio cultural model representing its social organization, kinship, the family and household, life-cycle and special events. This pluri-cultural feature, it is argued, best explains the resilience of this group to many challenges over the years, including the recent challenge of a protracted and brutal rebel war. The book will be a valuable contribution to African studies, women's studies and anthropology because of its uniqueness. It is the first comprehensive and systematic study of the social organization and culture of this group from a perspective in which women are central. It also elaborates on many of the previous studies on the Krios previously referred to as "Creoles". It will augment the limited material available on women in the African Diaspora. No study of Africa, the African Diaspora or women in Africa would be complete without the important dimension that the study brings to the literature.

Book Journalism Cultures in Sierra Leone

Download or read book Journalism Cultures in Sierra Leone written by Sarah Bomkapre Koroma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-07 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides novel insights into the perspectives of journalists in Sierra Leone and on their work by examining their perceived journalistic values and the influences that shape them. It treats journalism as an occupational identity and as a community that works on the foundation of the sub-Saharan African philosophies that exalts communal values in every sphere of life. When journalists speak about their social function in society and values, they are sharing both their individual knowledge and experiences on their work. Therefore, journalistic values are never isolated ideologies, but exist within the contexts in which they practice. In this book, Sarah Bomkapre Koroma examines the perceptions of journalists on the societal influences that impact their work, ranging from individual, procedural, organizational, political, economic, and many more. Questions explored include: What journalism cultures exist in Sierra Leone? What effects do societal factors have on these journalistic cultures? How do journalists in Sierra Leone describe their roles? What epistemological underpinnings do they consider during practice? What ethical considerations do the journalists share?

Book The Underneath of Things

Download or read book The Underneath of Things written by Mariane C. Ferme and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-09-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this erudite and gracefully written ethnography, Mariane Ferme explores the links between a violent historical and political legacy, and the production of secrecy in everyday material culture. The focus is on Mende-speaking southeastern Sierra Leone and the surrounding region. Since 1990, this area has been ravaged by a civil war that produced population displacements and regional instability. The Underneath of Things documents the rural impact of the progressive collapse of the Sierra Leonean state in the past several decades, and seeks to understand how an even earlier history is reinscribed in the present.

Book Politics of Female Genital Cutting FGC Human Rights and the Sierra Leone State

Download or read book Politics of Female Genital Cutting FGC Human Rights and the Sierra Leone State written by Tom Obara Bosire and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics of Female Genital Cutting (FGC), Human Rights and the Sierra Leone State: The Case of Bondo Secret Society provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary post-war Sierra Leone politics through ethnographic examination of key cultural institutions like the Bondo society, the law, media and state actors. The book discusses historical, medical and socio-cultural underpinnings of the Female Genital Cutting (FGC) practice among members of the Bondo society in Sierra Leone by pointing out inherent and apparent tensions of a secret society dedicated to the continuation of long established gender practices at the counter-point of concerted international condemnation against the practice. Drawing on ethnography, the study highlights the complexity of FGC as practiced in Sierra Leone owing to the fact that it is interlaced in multifarious ways to politics, cosmology, community idioms of inclusion, medical metaphors and the sociological vernacular of people that practice it. In the Bondo society, some women have access to considerable forms of powers which endear them to political actors in Sierra Leone. On account of this and in a context of donor aid conditionality tied to efforts at ending FGC, a stage is therefore set where the local political elite ambivalently attend to competing interests from FGC adherents and eradication proponents in the high stakes politics of legitimatizing power. The book’s subtle and nuanced view of power handy to members of the Bondo society, however, does not lead to a vindication of FGC but is an attempt to go beyond blunt condemnation of the practice in order to explore the cultural and socio-political underpinnings that animate the practice.

Book Museums Heritage and International Development

Download or read book Museums Heritage and International Development written by Paul Basu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many claims are made regarding the power of cultural heritage as a driver and enabler of sustainable development, the relationship between museums, heritage and development has received little academic scrutiny. This book stages a critical conversation between the interdisciplinary fields of museum studies, heritage studies and development studies to explore this under-researched sphere of development intervention. In an agenda-setting introduction, the editors explore the seemingly oppositional temporalities and values represented by these "past-making" and "future-making" projects, arguing that these provide a framework for mutual critique. Contributors to the volume bring insights from a wide range of academic and practitioner perspectives on a series of international case studies, which each raise challenging questions that reach beyond merely cultural concerns and fully engage with both the legacies of colonial power inequalities and the shifting geopolitical dynamics of contemporary international relations. Cultural heritage embodies different values and can be instrumentalized to serve different economic, social and political objectives within development contexts, but the past is also intrinsic to the present and is foundational to people’s aspirations for the future. Museums, Heritage and International Development explores the problematics as well as potentials, the politics as well as possibilities, in this fascinating nexus.

Book New Perspectives on the Sierra Leone Krio

Download or read book New Perspectives on the Sierra Leone Krio written by Mac Dixon-Fyle and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ex-slave, Krio population of Freetown, Sierra Leone - an amalgam of ethnicities drawn from several parts of the African continent - is a fascinating study in hybridity, creolization, European cultural penetration, the retention of African cultural values, and the interface between New World returnees and autochthonous populations of West Africa. Although its Nigerian connections are often acknowledged, insufficient attention has been paid to the indigenous Sierra Leonean roots of this community. This anthology addresses this problem, while celebrating the complexities of Krio identity and Krio interaction with other ethnic groups and nationalities in the British colonial experience.

Book Free Slaves Freetown and the Sierra Leonean Civil War

Download or read book Free Slaves Freetown and the Sierra Leonean Civil War written by Joseph Kaifala and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a historical narrative covering various periods in Sierra Leone’s history from the fifteenth century to the end of its civil war in 2002. It entails the history of Sierra Leone from its days as a slave harbor through to its founding as a home for free slaves, and toward its political independence and civil war. In 1462, the country was discovered by a Portuguese explorer, Pedro de Sintra, who named it Serra Lyoa (Lion Mountains). Sierra Leone later became a lucrative hub for the Transatlantic Slave Trade. At the end of slavery in England, Freetown was selected as a home for the Black Poor, free slaves in England after the Somerset ruling. The Black Poor were joined by the Nova Scotians, American slaves who supported or fought with the British during the American Revolution. The Maroons, rebellious slaves from Jamaica, arrived in 1800. The Recaptives, freed in enforcement of British antislavery laws, were also taken to Freetown. Freetown became a British colony in 1808 and Sierra Leone obtained political independence from Britain in 1961. The development of the country was derailed by the death of its first Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, and thirty years after independence the country collapsed into a brutal civil war.
