Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Siena and Southern Tuscany In any journey through Southern Tuscany the traveller, if he be wise, will set out from Empoli and use the old mediaeval highway, Via Francigena, at least as far as Siena. If he come by train from Florence or the North it is at Empoli by the Val d' Elsa that he will enter this beautiful country; and, indeed, for all practical purposes the railway follows the road up the valley so far as the lovely city which on her triune hill seems to rule all this southern part of Tuscany, made up as it is of hill and vale and desert. The great highway, which, whether afoot or in the train, the traveller will thus follow to Siena is, as it were, the backbone of the Sanese. By it, and by it alone, whether from Rome or from the North, Europe, the life of Europe, passed into this great corner of Tuscany. Unknown to the Romans, the Via Francigena, or Francesca, for it is known by either name, was, as its name implies, the way of the Franks into Italy, the one thing maybe that anywhere in the world was created by the Dark Ages, as we so rightly call that vast period of time in which the light of Rome seemed to be extinguished and Europe at the mercy of the Barbarians. Book Byways in Southern Tuscany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Byways in Southern Tuscany Classic Reprint written by Katharine Hooker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Byways in Southern Tuscany It is a country rich with cultivation. Vines and olives, olives and vines lie on either hand, and heights dark with ilex or green and gold with chestnuts, while the roadside is bordered with wild flowers, among which the poppy pre vails and flaunts its glowing scarlet above the rest. We pass tiny villages and farm houses, there are small streams to cross and the River Merse which here turns and doubles upon itself keeps us company now and then in its wind ings. Before traveling far there is Montarrente, a small but fine old ruin on a slight eminence above the road, and a few miles beyond it we emerge from the hills at the edge of a level treeless meadow, and find ourselves opposite the noble remnant of the great monastery of San Galgano. There is no other such fine example of pure Gothic in all Italy as what remains standing of this church, nor per haps anywhere in Tuscany an ecclesiastical establishment that has had a more august and typical history. In timately connected with Siena, it would be hard to ex aggerate the importance of their relation in an age when the Church was in its completest ascendency. San Galgano became a Widespreading estate of many activities and great wealth but with its gradual decay no evidence has been left of its numerous buildings excepting the lofty, roofless walls of the church. This is approached through the mud of an unclean farm yard, this stately ruin, worthy of a position peaceful and sequestered, but here treated with so little respect. With some indignation you wait while the contadino, who is the custodian, unlocks an iron. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Siena I DO not think that any apology is necessary for this book. The Republic of Siena played an important part in Italy in the Middle Ages, and in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But whilst her neighbour Florence has had many historians, there is no complete history of Siena in any language. Moreover, whilst there are many works in English on subj ects connected with the art and literature of Renaissance, there are but few in our tongue which treat in a serious and scholarly spirit of the history of the Italian States. My original intention was first to tell brie y the story of Siena, and afterwards to compose a fuller account of her troubled, struggling life. But, as time progressed, I determined to attempt to write a book which would both be useful to the historical student and also not without interest to the general reader. Book The Other Tuscany

Download or read book The Other Tuscany written by Thomas W. Blomquist and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of late medieval Tuscany have traditionally relied on historiographical premises derived from the experience of its intensely investigated capital city. Specifically, normative and quantitative data from Florentine sources have been employed to chart demographic, social, and economic trends during the communal age and across the period of the Black Death and its aftermath. The results have invited instructive comparisons with other regions of Italy, as well as other parts of Europe. At the same time, however, the focus on Florence in its role as a metropolitan center belies the conceptual problems inherent in the modern definition of region, applicable only with hindsight to medieval juridical and topographical boundaries. The essays in this volume offer non-Italian scholars a representative sample of current European research and a summary of recent debates regarding the historical evolution of those republics that posed the most formidable obstacles to the extension of Florentine hegemony. While they cover a range of topics, they all provide evidence of the important resources available to scholars working in provincial Tuscan archives and the volume offers an excellent sampling of the state of scholarship on these Italian communities.

Proud memories of the fame, the power, the riches and conquests of Florence in bygone times - of the great names which have shed lustre on its literature, arts, science and arms - foster the bright hopes and lofty aspirations in which Italians indulge, of the future of their native land. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child of Tuscany Day have the good fortune to know the quaint and beautiful city where I have laid the scene of this little story; for among all the cities of Europe there is none more interesting, and which people learn to love better, than Florence, Florence, the fairest and most famous of the daughters of Rome! As Dante calls her. You have doubtless seen on your maps that Florence is situated in the northern part of Italy. It is a city of noble antiquity, having existed, some historians tell us, as early as the Roman period. In the twelfth century it was already the most important town of Tuscany, and after wards became the capital of the independent duchy of that name; and there the princes and dukes held their court. In 1861 all the provinces of Italy were united into one kingdom under Victor Emmanuel, and the court was removed to Rome, 1870. But Florence is still visited every spring by many of the nobility of Europe, on account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
