Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Charleston and the Operations on the South Atlantic Coast in the War Among the States The following brief historical study is a fragment of a work which was intended to cover the operations against Charleston from their beginning to their consummation. The author, General Samuel Jones, late of the Army of the Confederate States, died before its completion and before he had reached the consideration of his own services in the defense of Charleston. The work is published from an unfinished manuscript left among the author's papers, and after the lapse of a number of years. It is offered now in the belief that it will be found of value and interest to the student of military history. General Samuel Jones was born December 17, 1819, at Woodfield, the plantation home of his parents, in Powhatan County, Virginia. His father, Samuel Jones, was a nephew and ward of Governor William Giles, of Virginia, under whose care he was brought up, and a graduate of Princeton College. General Jones' mother was Ann Moseley, daughter of Mr. Edward Moseley, of Powhatan County. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed account of Britain’s Siege of Charleston is “a welcome addition to the history of South Carolina and of the American Revolution” (Journal of Military History). In 1779 Sir Henry Clinton and more than eight thousand British troops left the waters of New York, seeking to capture the colonies’ most important southern port, Charleston, South Carolina. Clinton and his officers believed that victory in Charleston would change both the seat of the war and its character. In this comprehensive study of the 1780 siege and surrender of Charleston, Carl P. Borick offers a full examination of the strategic and tactical elements of Clinton’s operations. Drawing on an impressive array of primary and secondary sources, Borick contends that the British effort against Charleston was one of the most critical campaigns of the war. He examines the shift in British strategy, the efforts of their army and navy, and the difficulties the patriots faced as they defended the city. He also explores the roles of key figures in the campaign, including Benjamin Lincoln, William Moultrie, and Lord Charles Cornwallis.

Book Sumter After the First Shots

Download or read book Sumter After the First Shots written by Derek Smith and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows the story of how the Civil War began at Fort Sumter, but what happened to the fort after the first shots were fired there? The North wanted to restore Sumter to its rightful place in the Union and close the vital Confederate supply port of Charleston while the South needed to defend its birthplace and keep the supplies flowing--thus making Fort Sumter one of the most fervently attacked and most tenaciously defended pieces of real estate in the United or Confederate States of America throughout four years of war. • Recounts the bombardments, naval battles, and amphibious attacks waged for possession of Fort Sumter, Charleston, and its harbor • Focuses on the human element, from squabbling Confederate and Union commanders to the common soldiers inside the fort and the men and women of Charleston • Features notable figures such as Robert E. Lee and P. G. T. Beauregard; the 54th Massachusetts, the black regiment made famous by the movie Glory; and the Confederate submarine Hunley
