Book Sibyl s Song

Download or read book Sibyl s Song written by Arlene Sager Freesemann and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 100 years old!! Joyce said to me, “You are so cute.” Me cute? I was never called cute when I was a little girl, and now that I am almost 100 years old, I am cute? This really gives me a chuckle. I am sitting at my daughter’s home in my own recliner that was brought from my house. They took me kicking and screaming from my home, not literally but inside. Someone took my most prized possession, my sewing machine, which, even if it is a treadle sewing machine, it has brought me much joy. I sewed many of my dresses on it and when I started making cloth dolls it served me well. I made over 100 cloth dolls and for each doll I made dresses, bonnets, booties and bloomers. I gave them to anyone who wanted to have a cuddly doll to hold. I taught the little girls next door how to sew doll clothes, a skill they can take into adulthood, I hope. I have written my childhood memories many times. I still like to go back in time in my mind. I can’t get around as fast as I used to, even if I walk often for exercise. I can still read and pray and think of the dear friends I left behind that met in my home most Sundays for fellowship. I always brought my sweet rolls to the potlucks we shared. We had good visits and laughter. I love remembering the ministers who I had in my home through the years. What a privilege it was. The spirit they showed by their life encouraged me in my faith. I have had a good long life. The sad times I can’t forget, and it makes me almost cry. I will never forget when my baby died, waking up and finding her cold. Or the terrible time my son got run over and died. There was much horror and sorrow when my daughter and her family were burned in a plane crash. I lost my three grandchildren and dear Ginna was burned so badly. It has been 30 years since my husband died suddenly. Ruth lived with me for eight years, but her heart gave out and she died. LeRoy’s body could no longer work because of the ravages of myotonic muscular dystrophy and he is gone. Only three of my children left. I can’t face losing another one. I still remember what my Grandpa told me. He said whenever you are sad or have the blues, just get busy and do nice things for others. It will take your thoughts off of yourself. I read books that take me to the places that I can only travel to in my mind. Once while staying with my granddaughter I was so engrossed in a book and right when it got to a scary part she gave out a big sneeze and it made me jump.

Book excerpt: What is now currently the 'holy seat of the Vatican' in Italy, was originally the sacerdotal seat of these ancient black Sibyl Queen Mothers. Centuries before for Christ, they were known to heal the sick, restore dignity and strength to the weak, and restore sight to the blind. They were famous for curing lameness, epileptics, deaf mutes and lepers. They were said to 'cast out demons' and even to 'raise-up the dead' Their prophecies are the oldest and most authentic in the world. They were the basis for Greek and Roman tragedies and plays. More astonishing, their prophetic books were later collected by the Roman authorities, who needed a 'western theological' foundation in order to compete with the powerful levitical Jews. These Sibyl prophecies soon became the sole and undisputed precursor to the western, Christian Bible. .

Book The Sibyl Series of the Fifteenth Century

Download or read book The Sibyl Series of the Fifteenth Century written by Robin Raybould and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin Raybould's The Sibyl Series of the Fifteenth Century examines the startling and sudden change that occurred in the representation of the sibyls throughout Europe during the early Renaissance. Raybould describes how and why during this period the number, names, attributes and prophecies of these archaic prophetesses were selected and stabilized thus providing new witness to the Christian message in sharp contrast to earlier representations where the sibyls had played a minor role in the history of classical and Christian divination and prophecy. The book examines all the fifteenth-century instances of these series, as well as the manuscripts which describe them, identifies the origin of the sibylline prophecies and suggests reasons for the widespread popularity of this new artistic phenomenon.

Book The Sibyl and Her Scribes

Download or read book The Sibyl and Her Scribes written by Anke Holdenried and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sibylla Tiburtina is a Latin prophecy attributed to a prophetess from classical antiquity. It concludes with an account of the End of History, involving the coming of the Antichrist and his battle with a Last World Emperor. Approximately 100 manuscripts, written between the mid-11th and the 16th centuries, survive which testify to the Tiburtina's immense popularity in the medieval West; as such the Tiburtina is a key text for understanding medieval apocalypticism and occupies an important place in the intellectual history of the Middle Ages. However, studies of the manuscripts and the history of the text have been largely neglected, in comparison with other similar works, so little is currently known about who copied and read the prophecy. Dr Holdenried's research fills this gap. This study is based on an examination of all surviving manuscripts and includes an analysis of the textual material which accompanies the Tiburtina, a survey of titles and annotations, as well as research on variant texts (including several hitherto unknown). Modern historiography regards the Tiburtina solely as a vehicle for expressing contemporary political concerns triggered by crises thought to herald the End of the World. This book provides a much more varied picture and offers a new approach to the Tiburtina by placing it, for the first time, in the context of medieval traditions which saw Sibylline prophecy as independent, non-Christian evidence of Christ's life and as confirmation of His divinity. As is shown, these traditions had a major impact on the reception of the Tiburtina. The book concludes with a repertory of the manuscripts, together with brief outlines of individual textual traditions as represented in groups of manuscripts, which will constitute a valuable reference source for other scholars.

Book Music and Visual Culture in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book Music and Visual Culture in Renaissance Italy written by Chriscinda Henry and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-24 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume explore the relationship between music and art in Italy across the long sixteenth century, considering an era when music-making was both a subject of Italian painting and a central metaphor in treatises on the arts. Beginning in the fifteenth century, transformations emerge in the depiction of music within visual arts, the conceptualization of music in ethics and poetics, and in the practice of musical harmony. This book brings together contributors from across musicology and art history to consider the trajectories of these changes and the connections between them, both in theory and in the practices of everyday life. In sixteen chapters, the contributors blend iconographic analysis with a wider range of approaches, investigate the discourse surrounding the arts, and draw on both social art history and the material turn in Renaissance studies. They address not only paintings and sculpture, but also a wide range of visual media and domestic objects, from instruments to tableware, to reveal a rich, varied, and sometimes tumultuous exchange among musical and visual arts and ideas. Enriching our understanding of the subtle intersections between visual, material, and musical arts across the long Renaissance, this book offers new insights for scholars of music, art, and cultural history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much like Greek and Roman mythology, Norse myths are still with us. Famous storytellers from JRR Tolkien to Neil Gaiman have drawn their inspiration from the long-haired, mead-drinking, marauding and pillaging Vikings. Their creator is a thirteenth-century Icelandic chieftain by the name of Snorri Sturluson. Like Homer, Snorri was a bard, writing down and embellishing the folklore and pagan legends of medieval Scandinavia. Unlike Homer, Snorri was a man of the world—a wily political power player, one of the richest men in Iceland who came close to ruling it, and even closer to betraying it... In Song of the Vikings, award-winning author Nancy Marie Brown brings Snorri Sturluson's story to life in a richly textured narrative that draws on newly available sources.

Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of almost 10.000 words about the oracles in religion * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices THE Sibyls occupy a conspicuous place in the traditions and history of ancient Greece and Rome. Their fame was spread abroad long before the beginning of the Christian era. Heraclitus of Ephesus, five centuries before Christ, compared himself to the Sibyl "who, speaking with inspired mouth, without a smile, without ornament, and without perfume, penetrates through centuries by the power of the gods." The ancient traditions vary in reporting the number and the names of these weird prophetesses, and much of what has been handed down to us is legendary. But whatever opinion one may hold respecting the various legends, there can be little doubt that a collection of Sibylline Oracles was at one time preserved at Rome. There are, moreover, various oracles, purporting to have been written by ancient Sibyls, found in the writings of Pausanias, Plutarch, Livy, and in other Greek and Latin authors. Whether any of these citations formed a portion of the Sibylline books once kept in Rome we cannot now determine; but the Roman capitol was destroyed by fire in the time of Sulla (B. C. 84), and again in the time of Vespasian (A. D. 69), and whatever books were at those dates kept therein doubtless perished in the flames. It is said by some of the ancients that a subsequent collection of oracles was made, but, if so, there is now no certainty that any fragments of them remain.
