Made of steel and cement blocks, topped with razor barbed wire, and reinforced with video monitors and movement sensors, this wall was not put up to protect a prison or a military base, but rather to guard a three-day meeting of the finance ministers of the Group of Eight (G8). The wall manifested a level of security that is increasingly commonplace at meetings regarding the global economy. The authors of Shutting Down the Streets have directly observed and participated in more than 20 mass actions against global in North America and Europe, beginning with the watershed 1999 WTO meetings in Seattle and including the 2007 G8 protests in Heiligendamm. Shutting Down the Streets is the first book to conceptualize the social control of dissent in the era of alterglobalization. Based on direct observation of more than 20 global summits, the book demonstrates that social control is not only global, but also preemptive, and that it relegates dissent to the realm of criminality. The charge is insurrection, but the accused have no weapons. The authors document in detail how social control forecloses the spaces through which social movements nurture the development of dissent and effect disruptive challenges.

He flashed a smile at her, “What’s all this?” She chuckled, “You have some serious bed head Mr. Michaels.” Without a word he came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and placing his hands on her stomach. “Should you really be standing up for such a long time, Mrs. Michaels?” “I’m fine Jacob,” she replied. “Besides the doctor said walking is healthy for me and the baby, so standing shouldn’t hurt.” She laughed patting his cheek playfully. He left a butterfly kiss where her fingers brushed against his lips. “Well, if physical activity is helpful…” Her grin gave way to a full smile as she reached back to swat him. After a short pause he continued, “Seriously, do you know what would make this day better?” She raised her eyebrow, expecting him to say something suggestive (which was typical of him). He spun her around in his arms so that she was facing him, her belly protruded slightly between them making him hold her awkwardly but he went on pretending she didn’t notice. “I was just going to say, what would make this day better…” he trailed off looking deeply into her eyes. “is finding out we’re having a boy today.” She let out a bark of laughter “Really, that’s not where I thought you were going with that.”

While starting work on compiling notes on The Gravel Road, I earnestly began to want to bring back to life those long-forgotten beginnings of an ancestral family, hoping to capture their experiences of surviving under extreme circumstances in their daily lives. At this time, men of different colors and creeds could put aside their grievances, uniting in the determination and will to succeed. I listened to the many stories told by my grandfather Sanderson, which became an integral part in my research. These stretched across old Prussia in Eastern Germany to the old cotton mills in the north of England. The Gravel Road covers 140 years of old and modern history where two exceptional, courageous families, though ethically disparate and living worlds apart, were drawn together and united in peace. In doing so, they paved the way for the next generation. I gathered many hours of notes to write this book in order to write true-to-life characters. My goal was that, in time, it would become a source of wonder and pride for all those who came to befriend them as I did. While reliving those lives, I tried to get an understanding of how some feared the unknown, while others ventured far in the last century, ultimately changing attitudes along the pathways to life.

Yet policy responses are dismissive and evictions commonplace. Despite being progressively marginalised from public space, street traders in the global south are engaged in spatial and political battlegrounds to reclaim space, and claim de facto property rights over their place of work, through quiet infiltration, union power, or direct action. This book explores 'rebel streets', the challenges faced by informal economy actors and how organised groups are seeking to reframe legal understandings to create new claims to space and urban rights. The book sets out new thinking and a conceptual framework for improved understanding of the plural relationship between law, rights, and space for the informal economy, the contest between traditional, modernist and rights-based approaches to development, and impacts on the urban working poor. With a focus on street trading, the book seeks to reframe the legal context in which modern informal economies operate, drawing on key areas of academic inquiry and case studies of how vendors are staking claim to urban rights. The book argues for a reconceptualisation of legal instruments to provide a rights-based framework for urban work that recognises the legitimacy of urban informal economies, the scope for collective management of urban resources, and the social value of public space as a site for urban livelihoods. During the 1990s, bad government decision-making resulted in the U.S. Interstate Highway System growing by only one seventh the rate of traffic growth. The poor maintenance of existing roads is another concern. In cities around the world, highly political and wasteful government decision-making has led to excessive traffic congestion that has created long commutes, reduced safety, and caused loss of leisure time.Street Smart examines the privatization of roads in theory and in practice. The authors see at least four possible roles for private companies, beyond the well-known one of working under contract to design, build, or maintain governmentally provided roads. These include testing and licensing vehicles and drivers; management of government-owned facilities; franchising; and outright private ownership. Two chapters describe the history of private roads in the United Kingdom and the United States.
