Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Davenant (1606–1668) – Poet Laureate and Civil War hero – is one of the most influential and neglected figures in the history of British theatre. He introduced ‘opera’, actresses, scenes and the proscenium arch to the English stage. Narrowly escaping execution for his Royalist activities during the Civil War, he revived theatrical performances in London, right under Oliver Cromwell’s nose. Nobody, perhaps, did more to secure Shakespeare’s reputation or to preserve the memory of the Bard.Davenant was known to boast over a glass of wine that he wrote ‘with the very spirit’ of Shakespeare and was happy to be thought of as Shakespeare’s son. By recounting the story of his eventful life backwards, through his many trials and triumphs, this biography culminates with a fresh examination of the vexed issue of Davenant’s paternity. Was Sir William’s mother the voluptuous and maddening ‘Dark Lady’ of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, and was he Shakespeare’s ‘lovely boy’?

Book Shakespeare s Other Son

Download or read book Shakespeare s Other Son written by R.E. Pritchard and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Davenant (1606-1668) was in his time widely known as 'Davenant the Poet'. The son of an Oxford vintner (or quite possibly the natural son of his godfather, William Shakespeare), he wrote poems for and about the Court of Charles I, and, despite losing his nose to mercury treatment for the clap, which other people thought funny, went on to replace Ben Jonson as Poet Laureate and collaborate with Inigo Jones in composing spectacular Court masques, as well as writing many successful plays -- a few fashionably blood-thirsty, most showing a real comic gift, humanity and sympathy with 'ordinary life'. In the Civil War, he earned a knighthood as an especially successful gun-runner for the Royalists, before escaping to Paris, where he worked on an epic poem. Then sent off by Charles II to colonize Virginia but captured by the Parliamentarians, he escaped execution but was imprisoned for five years. With the Restoration, he practically re-invented English theatre, with the first English opera, women actors, movable scenery and the proscenium arch, as well as reviving interest in Shakespeare with inventive adaptations. Energetic, affable and resilient, he was an appealing and well-liked character. Celebrated and important in his day, Davenant is now surprisingly little known. This enterprising study introduces modern readers to his wit, poetry, and growing scepticism as to Court and aristocratic values, and his developing feminist sympathies. Here, select excerpts and summaries bring this entertaining writer to a new, wider audience.

Book Who Killed William Shakespeare

Download or read book Who Killed William Shakespeare written by Simon Stirling and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-08-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Shakespeare lived in violent times; his death passed without comment. By the time he was adopted as the national poet of England the details of his life had been concealed. He had become an invisible man, the humble Warwickshire lad who entertained royalty and then faded into obscurity. But his story has been carefully manipulated. In reality, he was a dissident whose works were highly critical of the regimes of Elizabeth I and James I. Who Killed William Shakespeare? examines the means, motive and the opportunity that led to his murder, and explains why Will Shakespeare had to be ‘stopped’. From forensic analysis of his death mask to the hunt for his missing skull, the circumstances of Shakespeare’s death are reconstructed and his life reconsidered in the light of fresh discoveries. What emerges is a portrait of a genius who spoke his mind and was silenced by his greatest literary rival.

This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a series of papers we delivered at the annual Shakespeare conference held at the Università Cattolica of Milan over three years. During this period our research interests ran on more or less parallel lines, moving from Shakespeare’s sonnets to the Bard’s influence on Keats and Shelley. If this was probably due to a similar way of interpreting the conference titles, it was just a coincidence that both of us devoted particular attention to King Lear. This play, we discovered, was particularly relevant to the work we were autonomously carrying out, Luisa Camaiora being then engaged in writing her book on Keats’s Odes, and Carlo Bajetta editing Shelley’s Peter Bell. As a consequence, we started mentioning articles, discussed recent research, and there was much swapping of books – which created more than a little confusion in our bookshelves, and much irritation in some University librarians. When we looked back at these essays, we were surprised to note that a fil rouge seemed to run through them. From the ambiguities of one of Shakespeare’s most famous sonnets, number 116, they move on to describe the allusive structure of the sonnet-chorus of Romeo and Juliet, hence to the complexities of the initial scene of King Lear and the uses to which this play was put by Keats and Shelley; they eventually come back to Keats’s relationship with the works of the Bard, and finally to yet another sonnet, which constitutes in many ways an original re-reading of Shakespeare. ‘Shakespearean Readings’, alluding to both textual variants, critical analysis, and a writer’s understanding of a literary work, seems to be a fitting title to describe this red thread. ‘'Passage' and 'Traffic' in Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Textual Madness: King Lear’s peregrinations’ were first published in To go or not to go? Catching the moving Shakespeare (ed. L. Camaiora, Milan, I.S.U. Università Cattolica, 2004), ‘John Keats and his Presider Shakespeare’ and ‘Shakespeare’s Sonnet 12 and Keats’s “When I have fears”’ appeared in a different form in L’Analisi Linguistica e Letteraria, 7:1, 1999, while ‘Shelley’s Shakespearean Mockery of Wordsworth’, which was read at the Shakespeare Days conference in April 2003, both relies on and integrates some sections of the introduction to Peter Bell: the 1819 Texts which appeared in December of the same year (Mursia, Milan). A man and woman carry on an illicit tryst in the Crown Inn, Oxford, England. The lovers are married; not, of course, to each other. A child is born of their clandestine affair. The man, whose reputation as a playwright and poet is growing throughout his country, is William Shakespeare. The woman is Jane Davenant, the wife of the inns proprietor, who sleeps peacefully one fl oor below. Jane will later be known as The Dark Lady of Shakespearean legend. The second tale, set in 2010, moves eastward across America then on to England. Its antagonist seeks vengeance against the Bard, foreshadowed by poems, which pathetically mimic Shakespeares style. The vengeance begins with thefts and vandalism of the Bards works in San Francisco and Las Vegas, then escalates from an assault in Milwaukee to explosive mayhem and murder at Washington DCs venerated Folger Shakespeare Library. To solve these crimes, Ovid Kent, a former DEA operative, now a rare book dealer, is hired by a billionaire English fi nancier and owner of the worlds largest private collection of Shakespeareana, an expected target of the mayhem. Ovid is aided throughout by the frequently evanescing Will Shakespeare himself. The storylines have their dramatic nexus in Oxford, in the very room of the very inn where the fi rst tale began. There, the stunning climax plays itself out in a breath-holding scene between Ovid, Will Shakespeare and the antagonist
