Book Shut the Door

Download or read book Shut the Door written by June Fulton Ellis and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late 1920s was a good time to be a child growing up on a farm. In this memoir, author June Fulton Ellis recounts the story of her youth, the story of a girl raised on a farm in Greene County in the southwest part of Missouri near the Ozarks. Born in 1925, June was the oldest of seven children of Lloyd and Emma Fulton. Shut the Door, Youre Lettin in the Flies! provides a vivid account of her parents, siblings, childhood, adolescence, and life on the farm. She remembers her mother as a nurturing woman who taught her the necessary skills to survive on the farm and in lifefrom gardening to cooking and plucking chickens. She describes her father as a funny man who cared for his large family. Each family member contributed to the health and well-being of the whole family, with knowledge passed to them through no-nonsense rules and the warm embraces of a loving mother and father. From everyday life to church life to school life, Shut the Door, Youre Lettin in the Flies! presents a reflection of the innocent times of the 1920s and 30s.

Book excerpt: In the vein of "American Beauty," Shut the Door offers a glimpse into the world of a family in crisis. It focuses on two teenage sisters struggling to carve their identities as young adults, taking risks and undergoing disturbing transformations that go unchallenged by their emotionally absent parents. Meanwhile, their parents' marriage is disintegrating and no longer provides the support the girls so desperately need. Their father's prolonged absence on a business trip provides the impetus to reevaluate family roles and relationships--and the choices made are shocking. This evocative family portrait reveals just what happens when our support system falls away and we become disconnected from the ones we love the most.

Yes, it overwhelms because I know that she hates seeing me labor as she labored, yet I know that she is happy seeing me with her friends. Do you see me Grandma? - Well, she’s silent at the moment because you don’t know our story. Yes, if you continue reading, you’ll see that doors shut, and others open. A door has even opened for her. As for me in this moment, I’m standing before another door, and I can tell you only that I am hoping that it opens to the world that she imagined for me. Book An Absolutely Remarkable Thing

Download or read book An Absolutely Remarkable Thing written by Hank Green and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Sparkling with mystery, humor and the uncanny, this is a fun read. But beneath its effervescent tone, more complex themes are at play.” —San Francisco Chronicle In his wildly entertaining debut novel, Hank Green—cocreator of Crash Course, Vlogbrothers, and SciShow—spins a sweeping, cinematic tale about a young woman who becomes an overnight celebrity before realizing she's part of something bigger, and stranger, than anyone could have possibly imagined. The Carls just appeared. Roaming through New York City at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship—like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor—April and her best friend, Andy, make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world—from Beijing to Buenos Aires—and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight. Seizing the opportunity to make her mark on the world, April now has to deal with the consequences her new particular brand of fame has on her relationships, her safety, and her own identity. And all eyes are on April to figure out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us. Compulsively entertaining and powerfully relevant, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing grapples with big themes, including how the social internet is changing fame, rhetoric, and radicalization; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring for the same dehumanization that follows a life in the public eye. The beginning of an exciting fiction career, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is a bold and insightful novel of now.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the Royal Navy Submarine Service in 1901, 173 submarines have been lost and in many circumstances with their entire crew. War inevitably takes a heavy toll: in World War Two alone – 341 officer and 2,801 ratings failed to return to harbour. The loss of personnel was roughly equivalent to the strength of the Submarine Arm at the outbreak of war. Between the first loss, A1 in 1904, and the last, Artemis in 1971, lie many stories in which cool nerve was very much in evidence and one can marvel at the escape of the only survivor of Perseus; and of the sinking of Olympus from which the few survivors had to swim seven miles before receiving help; and of Surgeon-Lieutenant Charles Rhodes who died that others may live. These and many other accounts of submarine escape are described within this history – and whenever possible in the words of survivors or witnesses.

Book excerpt: How the shift toward "technical copy protection" in the battle over digital copyright depends on changing political and commercial alignments that are profoundly shaping the future of cultural expression in a digital age. While the public and the media have been distracted by the story of Napster, warnings about the evils of "piracy," and lawsuits by the recording and film industries, the enforcement of copyright law in the digital world has quietly shifted from regulating copying to regulating the design of technology. Lawmakers and commercial interests are pursuing what might be called a technical fix: instead of specifying what can and cannot be done legally with a copyrighted work, this new approach calls for the strategic use of encryption technologies to build standards of copyright directly into digital devices so that some uses are possible and others rendered impossible. In Wired Shut, Tarleton Gillespie examines this shift to "technical copy protection" and its profound political, economic, and cultural implications. Gillespie reveals that the real story is not the technological controls themselves but the political, economic, and cultural arrangements being put in place to make them work. He shows that this approach to digital copyright depends on new kinds of alliances among content and technology industries, legislators, regulators, and the courts, and is changing the relationship between law and technology in the process. The film and music industries, he claims, are deploying copyright in order to funnel digital culture into increasingly commercial patterns that threaten to undermine the democratic potential of a network society. In this broad context, Gillespie examines three recent controversies over digital copyright: the failed effort to develop copy protection for portable music players with the Strategic Digital Music Initiative (SDMI); the encryption system used in DVDs, and the film industry's legal response to the tools that challenged them; and the attempt by the FCC to mandate the "broadcast flag" copy protection system for digital television. In each, he argues that whether or not such technical constraints ever succeed, the political alignments required will profoundly shape the future of cultural expression in a digital age.

Book excerpt: Shut The Door! - Three little words that jumped off the pages at me as I looked again to a very familiar and loved passage of scripture found in 2 Kings 4. Two very different women with two very different stories are found in this chapter in the Word. I have heard these stories countless times over the years, but I had never noticed those words, "shut the door," until this time in my study. Why now? What was it that The Lord wanted me to see? In this study, we will take a look at these stories. We will understand from the Word of God exactly what we need to do to shut the door to the enemy and his influence in our lives. We will read about these two very different women with very difficult problems - but their answer was the same! God delivered them both as they shut the door to the circumstances they were faced with, and instead deliberately set out to hear from God. They then walked in obedience to the leading of the Spirit of God, and the results for both were beyond their hopes and dreams. God's plans always exceed our dreams!Shut the Door is a six-week Bible study from Church of God Women's Discipleship.
