Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shropshire Folk-Lore: A Sheaf of Gleanings As every word of the book in its present state comes from the Editor's own brain (except when otherwise specified), the original author must not be held responsible for omissions or insertions, for the use of extraneous matter to illustrate Shropshire superstition, nor for the imperfections of the literary style. On some of these points I received much good advice from the author of folk-lore of the Northern Counties; but as he has not seen any of the finished ms. Or proofs before publication, he is not account able for the poor use I fear I may have made of his kind hints. Book Shropshire Folk Tales

  • Author : Amy Douglas
  • Publisher : The History Press
  • Release : 2011-09-16
  • ISBN : 0752470450

Download or read book Shropshire Folk Tales written by Amy Douglas and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In places, Shropshire has traditional patchwork fields and hedgerows; in others, small villages and market towns with black and white half-timbered buildings. But it also has places that are still wild – hills where heather and bracken cling to the rocks while peewits call overhead and strange rock formations jut to the sky, casting their shadows over the countryside below. The thirty stories in this new collection have grown out of the county's diverse landscapes: tales of the strange and macabre; memories of magic and other worlds; proud recollections of folk history; stories to make you smile, sigh and shiver. Moulded by the land, weather and generations of tongues wagging, these traditional tales are full of Shropshire wit and wisdom, and will be enjoyed time and again.

Book The Late Victorian Folksong Revival

Download or read book The Late Victorian Folksong Revival written by E. David Gregory and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Late Victorian Folksong Revival: The Persistence of English Melody, 1878-1903, E. David Gregory provides a reliable and comprehensive history of the birth and early development of the first English folksong revival. Continuing where Victorian Songhunters, his first book, left off, Gregory systematically explores what the Late Victorian folksong collectors discovered in the field and what they published for posterity, identifying differences between the songs noted from oral tradition and those published in print. In doing so, he determines the extent to which the collectors distorted what they found when publishing the results of their research in an era when some folksong texts were deemed unsuitable for "polite ears." The book provides a reliable overall survey of the birth of a movement, tracing the genesis and development of the first English folksong revival. It discusses the work of more than a dozen song-collectors, focusing in particular on three key figures: the pioneer folklorist in the English west country, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould; Frank Kidson, who greatly increased the known corpus of Yorkshire song; and Lucy Broadwood, who collected mainly in the counties of Sussex and Surrey, and with Kidson and others, was instrumental in founding the Folk Song Society in the late 1890s. The book includes copious examples of the song tunes and texts collected, including transcriptions of nearly 300 traditional ballads, broadside ballads, folk lyrics, occupational songs, carols, shanties, and "national songs," demonstrating the abundance and high quality of the songs recovered by these early collectors.

Book The Devil and the Victorians

Download or read book The Devil and the Victorians written by Sarah Bartels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, there has been a growing recognition of the significance of the supernatural in a Victorian context. Studies of nineteenth-century spiritualism, occultism, magic, and folklore have highlighted that Victorian England was ridden with spectres and learned magicians. Despite this growing body of scholarship, little historiographical work has addressed the Devil. This book demonstrates the significance of the Devil in a Victorian context, emphasising his pervasiveness and diversity. Drawing on a rich array of primary material, including theological and folkloric works, fiction, newspapers and periodicals, and broadsides and other ephemera, it uses the diabolic to explore the Victorians' complex and ambivalent relationship with the supernatural. Both the Devil and hell were theologically contested during the nineteenth century, with an increasing number of both clergymen and laypeople being discomfited by the thought of eternal hellfire. Nevertheless, the Devil continued to play a role in the majority of English denominations, as well as in folklore, spiritualism, occultism, popular culture, literature, and theatre. The Devil and the Victorians will appeal to readers interested in nineteenth-century English cultural and religious history, as well as the darker side of the supernatural.
