The Saint Paul Area Synod (SPAS) and the Iringa Diocese of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) have been partners in ministry since 1987. From its beginnings as a meeting between bishops, the partnership has mushroomed into involving people at the grassroots level¿reaching sixty congregations, over a thousand travelers, over 900 scholarship recipients, establishing the country¿s first private university, sponsoring construction, drilling wells for safe drinking water, and undertaking the expansion of health care facilities. This relationship of prayer, friendship, and partnership continues to grow stronger and stronger as God¿s grace spans the distance and cultural differences from Minnesota to Tanzania.

Based on immersive research of a transnational Christian medical aid program, Britt Halvorson tells the story of a thirty-year-old initiative that aimed to professionalize and modernize colonial-era evangelism. Creatively blending perspectives on humanitarianism, global medicine, and the anthropology of Christianity, she argues that the cultural spaces created by these programs operate as multistranded “conversionary sites,” where questions of global inequality, transnational religious fellowship, and postcolonial cultural and economic forces are negotiated. Book excerpt: Lutheran Mzungu is an exploration of personal cultural awakening when an American Lutheran professor of English volunteered for a six-month teaching stint at a Lutheran university in Tanzania and ended up teaching British Law. She quickly found herself to be mzungu (stranger, white person, outsider) on multiple levels: racially (white), economically ("first" world versus "third"), professionally (English professor placed in the Faculty of Law), even religiously (American Lutherans often comport themselves differently than Tanzanian). While often awkward, the author's experience was altogether positive. Being an outsider puts one in a position of exclusion while simultaneously giving a better vantage point for viewing the differences. Working and traveling in a foreign country means adapting oneself to native culture for anything to be accomplished. Radius-Kasik tells her experience with humor and humility, exploring and honoring the differences. In her journey, relationships became friendships, and deepening friendships challenged her to find her way into a place and a people so unlike anything she'd ever known, and yet so very like everything she'd ever known. A conundrum for sure, but mixing cultures is always a conundrum. Lutheran Mzungu is not a travel guide, but it might serve well for the reader about to embark on a first African experience. All a reader needs is an interest in exploring preconceived ideas about cultural differences between Africans and Westerners.

The collection highlights the cultural practices that link music with labor in Sukuma communities in northwestern Tanzania. These linkages are evident in the music of the elephant, snake, and porcupine hunting associations that flourished in the precolonial epoch, in the nineteenth-century regional and long-distance porter associations, and in the farmer associations that have proliferated since the beginning of the twentieth century. Acting primarily as an interpretive editor, the author collaborated with several Tanzanian scholars and translators towards fine-tuning the translation of these texts into English, and gathered testimonies in order to create succinct interpretive statements about the songs.

Book excerpt: Marja-Liisa Swantz has spent a lifetime conducting participatory action research in Tanzania, and In Search of Living Knowledge encapsulates her reactions. She started her career in 1952 in Tanganyika as an instructor to the first generation of women teachers at Ashira Teachers Training College, situated on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. In the first years of Tanzanias independence from Britain, she devoted five years (1965-1970) to participant research in a coastal Zaramo village near the capital city of Dar es Salaam. The research culminated in her book, Ritual and Symbol in Transitional Tanzanian Society, and a doctorate in Anthropology of Religion, which she received from the Swedish University of Uppsala in 1970. The author further developed the Participatory Approach to research while serving as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Dar es Salaam from 1972 to 1975. After becoming a lecturer at the University of Helsinki she continued to develop Participatory Action Research with Tanzanian and Finnish doctoral candidates in a project in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, known as Jipemoyo. She continued to apply the participatory approach in research projects as Director of the Institute of Development Research at the University of Helsinki, where she taught anthropology, and as a Senior Researcher at the World Institute for Development Economics Research Institute in Helsinki in the 1980s. Since retirement, the author has continued her research, writing, and participation in development projects in Tanzania, including projects in Mtwara and Lindi from 1992 to 1998, and for 12 years while involved in a Local Government Cooperation project between Hartola in Finland and Iramba in Tanzania.
