Book Shots and Snapshots in British East Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shots and Snapshots in British East Africa Classic Reprint written by Edward Bennet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shots and Snapshots in British East Africa What really renders that first journey up the Uganda Railway remarkable is the quantity of game you see in the reserve - kongoni, Grant and Thomson's gazelles, zebra, in vast numbers; now and then ostriches, a herd of Wildebeest, or a string of giraffe; sometimes a lion or a rhino. These animals do not fear the train, so you get a good View of them; but you must not conclude that they are as easy of approach when you are on foot. On arriving in most countries there is usually one question for which the newcomer should be prepared. In Sydney I am told he must admire the fine harbour; in Ireland he will probably be asked what he thinks about Home Rule or William the Third; and in British East Africa he will soon be asked what he thinks about the Uganda Railway. The carriage I travelled up in leaked in a rainstorm, and I said what I thought of the Uganda Railway in language that could not be mistaken. But I soon saw that this was not what I was meant to say. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Snap Shots From Sunny Africa Any of these Snapshots would be excellent reading in meetings of the Woman's Foreign Mis sionary Society, of Epworth Leagues, or of Sunday schools, where Africa is the theme. They could not fail to arrest the attention and fix the thought of those who hear them upon the pagan heathenism which now enthralls more than one hundred million of the people of that great continent. Book The Game of British East Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Game of British East Africa Classic Reprint written by C. H. Stigand and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game of British East Africa It is civilised weapons alone, especially when in the hands of irresponsible black men, that irreparably upset the balance of Nature. The black hunter, armed with primitive weapons, and the beast of prey, take their toll of life, but appear never to exterminate or even sensibly diminish the number of game. Civilisation is advancing with such rapid strides in British East Africa that year by year it becomes more difficult to find and observe game still undisturbed by the sportsman and hunter. Another generation and perhaps there will be little or no opportunities of observing these animals as they existed before the net of civilisation had been drawn round them. It thus behoves anyone who has had the fortune to be thrown much with wild and unsophisticated animals to leave as careful a record as possible of their ways and manners of living while there is still opportunity, and to study them in their natural state. It is this consideration which has induced me to attempt the task of describing the wild life of the country to the best of my ability. I quite realise that I am not specially qualified for the work, and that there are many with greater experience of the country and game than I possess. However, I hope that perhaps in later years, when the lion no longer roars over the plain and the rhino has ceased to wander in the open, that this book, in conjunction with many others of a similar nature, may be of some little value in reconstructing what will then be past natural history. If the deficiencies of this book only bring home to any more experienced sportsmen, who have nut yet done so, the necessity for recording their observations, it will not be without its value. Book excerpt: In Out of Africa, author Isak Dinesen takes a wistful and nostalgic look back on her years living in Africa on a Kenyan coffee plantation. Recalling the lives of friends and neighbours—both African and European—Dinesen provides a first-hand perspective of colonial Africa. Through her obvious love of both the landscape and her time in Africa, Dinesen’s meditative writing style deeply reflects the themes of loss as her plantation fails and she returns to Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karamojo Safari, first published in 1949, is a classic story of elephant hunting, safaris, native life, and the wilds of Uganda and Kenya in the late 1800s, at a time when the region (then known as “Karamojo”) was completely unknown to the outside world. Walter Bell (1880-1954), known as Karamojo Bell, was a Scottish adventurer, big game hunter in East Africa, soldier, decorated fighter pilot, sailor, writer, and painter. Famous for being one of the most successful ivory hunters of his time, Bell was an advocate of the importance of shooting accuracy and shot placement with smaller calibre rifles, over the use of heavy large-bore rifles for big African game. He improved his shooting skills by careful dissection and study of the anatomy of the skulls of the elephants he shot. He even perfected the clean shooting of elephants from the extremely difficult position of being diagonally behind the target; this shot became known as the Bell Shot. Although chiefly known for his exploits in Africa, Bell also traveled to North America and New Zealand, sailed windjammers, and saw service in South Africa during the Boer War, and flew in the Royal Flying Corps in East Africa, Greece and France during World War I.

Book Britain France and the Decolonization of Africa

Download or read book Britain France and the Decolonization of Africa written by Andrew W.M. Smith and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at decolonization in the conditional tense, this volume teases out the complex and uncertain ends of British and French empire in Africa during the period of ‘late colonial shift’ after 1945. Rather than view decolonization as an inevitable process, the contributors together explore the crucial historical moments in which change was negotiated, compromises were made, and debates were staged. Three core themes guide the analysis: development, contingency and entanglement. The chapters consider the ways in which decolonization was governed and moderated by concerns about development and profit. A complementary focus on contingency allows deeper consideration of how colonial powers planned for ‘colonial futures’, and how divergent voices greeted the end of empire. Thinking about entanglements likewise stresses both the connections that existed between the British and French empires in Africa, and those that endured beyond the formal transfer of power.
