Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Australia The aim of the author has been to make the book answer such questions as might reasonably be put to it by an intelligent reader, who will of course have regard to the limitations imposed by its size; and also to present a picture of the phases through which the country has passed. At the same time it is hoped that due importance has been given to personality. History is a record of the doings of men living in communities, not of blind, nerve less forces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of Australia Should that occur, the British race will, through them and through the North Americans, still be at the heart of events. Ten years have now elapsed since the establish ment of the Commonwealth of Australia. It sealed the union of the colonies, and legally recognized the national existence. That is the point to which we have attempted to carry the story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 1 of 3 In marshalling the facts which prove how much error has been accepted as truth with regard to the pilgrim fathers of Australia, I have allowed the actors to speak for themselves as much as possible. An author may labour to incorporate as the coinage of his own brain the wit or sense which emanated from those of whom he writes but success in such effort would be, after all, ignoble, and would rob his page of the dramatic element which makes it lifelike. The day will come when men will be glad to know how the colonizers of Australia lived and moved; what were their daily tasks and distractions; how and by whom troubles were created or overcome by what passions men were stirred from time to time how sometimes the blasts of tyranny were resisted by the growing plant, and how were engendered within it parasites which preyed upon its powers and threatened to bring low many a noble bough fitted to adorn it in season, and to render back the healthy sap which, coursing from root to branch, gives health and life to the tree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Making of Australian History, Vol. 1 of 2 In a work of this kind it has not been found pos sible, and it has not been desired, to suppress my personality. But my wish has been that my public actions should be placed in the full light of day, and left naked and unscreened to public criticism. What ever my work may amount to, it cannot be made more by words from me or from too tolerant friends, and it cannot be made less by the comments of adversaries. It must stand or be swept away according to the nature of its substance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 2 of 3 Governor Darling arrived in New South Wales in December 1825, after touching at Hobart Town and conveying the instructions of the Colonial Office as to the separation of the island government from that of New South Wales. He was a military man and much influenced by military ideas. A presentiment that he would be so influenced seems to have been instinctive with the leaders of the popular party, - the emancipists and self-styled patriots'. Brisbane had warmed their sympathies by cordiality on his departure, and they were in no humour to welcome his supplanter. The incoming Governor was received like the outgoing king: "As in a theatre the eyes of men Are idly bent on him that enters next... E'en so, or with much more contempt, men's eyes Did scowl on Richard. No man cried, 'God save him!'" Darling bore with him a Royal warrant appointing his Legislative Council, consisting of the chief military officer (Stewart, who had in that capacity administered the affairs of the colony in the brief interval between the departure of Brisbane and the arrival of Darling); the Chief Justice; Archdeacon Scott; the Colonial Secretary, Mr. Alexander Macleay (who arrived in January 1826, and was to succeed Major Goulbum); John Macarthur; Robert Campbell; and Charles Throsby. The Executive Council was to consist of the same persons, with the exception of the three last-named colonists. Practically those who cannot write can read to little purpose, and my assumption is in the main a just one. The difference in education of immigrants from England and Scotland being only 016 per cent. In favour of England I shall dismiss it but the condition of the Irish immigrants cannot be so considered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Australia: From 1606 to 1888 The Spaniards spent a few pleasant days among the fruit plantations, and slept in cool groves of overarching foliage; but subsequently they had quarrels and combats with the natives, of whom they killed a considerable number. When the Spaniards had taken on board a sufficient supply of wood and of fresh water they set sail, but had scarcely got out to sea when a fever spread among the crew, and became a perfect plague. They returned and anchored in the bay, where the vessels lay like so many hospitals. N 0 one died, and after a few days they again put to sea, this time to be driven back again by bad weather. Torres, with two ships, safely reached the sheltering bay, but the vessel in which De Quiros sailed was unable to enter it, and had to stand out to sea and weather the storm. The sailors then refused to proceed further with the voyage, and, having risen in mutiny, compelled De Quiros to turn the vessel's head for Mexico, which they reached after some terrible months of hunger and thirst. Book First Twenty Years of Australia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Twenty Years of Australia: A History Founded on Official Documents The story of the Early Days in Australia is one full of interest to many more than Australian settlers or the Australian born. It so differs from the tale to be told of present life there, as if centuries had passed in the interval. Dark as the chronicle may be, it is highly instructive and suggestive. We have in that gloomy and often forbidding picture of humanity a means of gauging the immense social progress of the colonies. Even in the worst phases of society at that remote period we fail not to detect some bright and pleasing features, indications of that struggle between light and darkness which ultimately led to the opening day. We have seen men and women, steeped in vice and misery, from neglect of Church and of State in Europe, emerging from poverty and moral degradation into respectability and purity. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of Australia and Elsewhere, 1842-1914 Show that Colonists, though living far away from the land of their origin, still remember the Mother Country, and regard her with the affection due to her by her children. The later portion, it is hoped, may prove of interest as representing the thought and action of an average man who has had to face problems, some of which have been and, in all probability, will continue to be, the subject of discussion and legislative action in the Parliament of Great Britain. In all that I did or attempted in legislation, my desire was not blindly to follow any leader, but, to do what I believed to be best for the country of my adoption, apart from mere party considerations. Throughout my parliamentary career, which began more than forty years ago, I have been more or less handicapped by the necessity of maintaining myself and those dependent on me by my professional earnings. Often when I would willingly have de voted all my thought to the solution of difficult questions I have had to scratch for sixpences. Book A Short History of Australia

Download or read book A Short History of Australia written by Ernest Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Australia This Short History of Australia begins with a blank space on the map, and ends with the record of a new name on the map, that of Anzac. It endeavours to elucidate the way in which the country was discovered, why and how it was settled, the development of civilized society within it, its political and social progress, mode of government, and relations, historical and actual, with the Empire of which it forms a part. The aim of the author has been to make the book answer such questions as might reasonably be put to it by an intelligent reader, who will of course have regard to the limitations imposed by its size; and also to present a picture of the phases through which the country has passed. At the same time it is hoped that due importance has been given to personality. History is a record of the doings of men living in communities, not of blind, nerveless forces. In a book written to scale, on a carefully prepared plan, it was not possible to deal more fully with some events about which various readers might desire to have more information. On some of these the author would have liked to wTite at greater length. The student who works much at any section of history finds many aspects which require more adequate treatment than they have yet received. In Australian history there are large spaces which need closer study than has yet been accorded to them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australasia, Vol. 1: Australia and New Zealand All place names beginning with Mac or M' have been spelt in full as Mac, beginning the second syllable with a small letter. This system has been adopted after reference to Dr. J. Scott Keltie, with whose approval I feel safe. It is often now impossible to determine how the stockman who first surveyed a country from Mac 's Look-out, or first watered his flock at Mac 's Water-hole, preferred to spell his name. When we find two brothers spelling their name, one Macallister and the other m'allister, geographers may be excused for adopting a uniform spelling of this prefix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discovery of Australia After the Greeks, came the all-conquering Romans, who vanquished and occupied almost all lands of which they had knowledge, but their geographical lore was meagre, and Strabo knew very little more than Herodotus, although he had the advantage of four hundred years. Commerce was destined to do more for geography than war, and, doubtless, the wealth and luxury of Rome induced the navigator of the time to seek for foreign merchandise, wherewith to gratify and pamper the rulers of the world. Following the march of centuries came the navigators of Arabia, of Scandinavia, of Venice, leading up to the illustrious Prince of Portugal, Henry the Navigator - probably the greatest promoter of maritime discovery - who, with Columbus, may be said to have shared the honours of the ocean during the fifteenth century. I hope I may be excused for giving the foregoing and subsequent brief outlines Of early geographical and cartographic lore by way of introduction to the main subjee't of the following pages, viz.: The Discovery of Australia. Book Australia Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Australia Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Edwin Carton Booth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australia, Vol. 2 of 2 Before the years of the present century had commenced, a cast-away boat's crew found masses of coal lying strewn upon the beach away north of the debouchment of the waters of the river. This discovery induced prospecting. Seams of coal were soon discovered. Coal River was the name given to the stream, and that of Newcastle to the settlement made upon its banks. The river had, however, been called the Hunter on the occasion of its dis covery in 1797, and that name it retains to the present. It rises in the Liverpool ranges, and is fed by several heads, all of them flowing through picturesque valleys. It has a length of two hundred miles, chiefly in a south-easterly direction towards the sea. Its lower course is through a rich agricultural country, for the most part low-lying and subject to inundation. Newcastle is pleasantly situate on a gently-rising hill, and on the ridge by which it is capped, on the south bank of the Hunter. Below the town, and at the mouth of the river, there used to be an island (nobby's Island, it was called, and strange stories of a convict who resided there are told), now connected with the mainland by means of a breakwater, of considerable use and value to the shipping visiting the harbour. Some idea of the importance of the shipping interest of Newcastle may be gathered from the fact, that nearly eight hundred thousand tons of coal are annually shipped from the port. In a very few years there is little doubt but European exports will be made direct to Newcastle, instead of having to undergo all the charges and cost consequent upon re-shipment at Melbourne or Sydney.
