Book Use of Ship mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Data to Study Mesoscale Oceanic Circulation Patterns in the Archipielago de Colon Galapagos Islands and the Gulf of the Farallones

Download or read book Use of Ship mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Data to Study Mesoscale Oceanic Circulation Patterns in the Archipielago de Colon Galapagos Islands and the Gulf of the Farallones written by John B. Steger and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ship-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data are used to study regional ocean patterns around the biologically rich regions of the Archipielago de Colon (Galapagos Islands) and the Gulf of the Farallones to test our assumptions about the circulation derived primarily from hydrographic samples. West of the Galapagos, an equatorial undercurrent transporting 7 Sv was present in November 1993, which decelerated within 30 km of the archipelago, shoaled, and diverged with a strong deflection to the southwest. A method of removing tidal velocities from ADCP measurements by creating an empirical model of the tides and using it to predict and subtract the tides is described. It is shown that in the Gulf of the Farallones, a large number of observations, typically more than acquired on one cruise, are necessary to reduce tidal model error. Detided ADCP data are used to describe the circulation in the Gulf under various wind conditions. Over the continental slope, Surface-to-depth poleward flow is present throughout the year. During wind relaxations, poleward flow strengthens and warmer, fresher water is transported onshore.

Book Detiding Shipboard mounted ADCP Data

Download or read book Detiding Shipboard mounted ADCP Data written by Marc Thomas Steiner and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for determining the net non-tidal flow from shipboard-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data is applied to observations from the Gulf of the Farallones in 1991- 2. Tidal currents represent a significant portion of the total flow in the region Both the tidal and non-tidal current fields are characterized by spatial and temporal variability on small scales. The detiding method performs a least-squares fit to determine the spatial structure of both the amplitudes of the major tidal constituents and the magnitude of the non-tidal flow. Synthetic data is used to examine the requirements and constraints in choosing the best polynomial fitting function for each of the fields components. Arbitrarily choosing a higher-order polynomial to represent these fields may result in misrepresentation of the true flow. Results of applying this technique to vertically-averaged ADCP data from five seasonal surveys of approximately five-day duration are presented.

Book Shipboard Acoustic Current Profiling During the Coastal Ocean Dynamics Experiment

Download or read book Shipboard Acoustic Current Profiling During the Coastal Ocean Dynamics Experiment written by P. Michael Kosro and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shipboard Doppler Acoustic Log (DAL) discussed in this study is a new tool for the measurement of ocean currents. By providing vertical profiles of currents over the upper 150m of ocean at points along the ship's path, it allows the ocean to be sampled in a way which is fundamentally different from moored current meters or drifters, the instruments most commonly used for current measurement. This instrument is used to examine the circulation in a region of strong coastal upwelling off Northern California, where it reveals an unexpectedly energetic and spatially complex synoptic flow field.

Book Measuring Ocean Currents

Download or read book Measuring Ocean Currents written by Antony Joseph and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-08-12 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Ocean Currents: Tools, Technologies, and Data covers all major aspects of ocean current measurements in view of the implications of ocean currents on changing climate, increasing pollution levels, and offshore engineering activities. Although more than 70% of the Earth is covered by ocean, there is limited information on the countless fine- to large-scale water motions taking place within them. This book fills that information gap as the first work that summarizes the state-of-the-art methods and instruments used for surface, subsurface, and abyssal ocean current measurements. Readers of this book will find a wealth of information on Lagrangian measurements, horizontal mapping, imaging, Eulerian measurements, and vertical profiling techniques. In addition, the book describes modern technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures, including HF Doppler radar systems, satellite-borne sensors, ocean acoustic tomography, and more. Crucial aspects of ocean currents are described in detail as well, including dispersion of effluents discharged into the sea and transport of beneficial materials—as well as environmentally hazardous materials—from one region to another. The book highlights several important practical applications, showing how measurements relate to climate change and pollution levels, how they affect coastal and offshore engineering activities, and how they can aid in tsunami detection. Coverage of measurement, mapping and profiling techniques Descriptions of technologies for remote measurement of ocean currents and their signatures Reviews crucial aspects of ocean currents, including special emphasis on the planet-spanning thermohaline circulation, known as the ocean's "conveyor belt," and its crucial role in climate change
