Book Shining Light on Plasmonic Silver Nanoparticles for for Catalysis

Download or read book Shining Light on Plasmonic Silver Nanoparticles for for Catalysis written by Alexandra Gelle and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) are currently actively researched for their application towards enhancing photocatalytic transformations, owing to a unique physical phenomenon called localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). This appealing interaction with light featured by coinage metal nanoparticles under visible light irradiation translates into thermal and electromagnetic properties, which can subsequently be used to drive chemical transformations. Different examples of how LSPR allows to perform catalytic reactions under mild conditions are discussed in this thesis. The importance of nano-photocatalysts, especially plasmon-driven ones, for the development of more sustainable alternatives is first introduced, along with reviews focusing on organic transformations mediated by plasmonic nanoparticles and plasmon-enhanced water splitting. The catalytic properties of silver nanocubes towards the oxidation and hydrogenation of carbonyls using hot electrons are then presented. The synthesis, characterization and usage in continuous flow chemistry of these plasmonic nanocatalysts are detailed in this thesis. The use of plasmonic silver nanoparticles in antenna-reactor heterometallic is also discussed. The field enhancement in the vicinity of Ag PNPs was exploited for the projects presented in the last chapters. The plasmon-induced field enhancement allowed to boost the activity of a well-known photocatalyst, Tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II), towards selective oxidation with singlet oxygen. Finally, the use of two other photocatalysts, Rose Bengal and Methylene Blue, in such antenna-reactor systems is reported. This work sheds light onto the importance of the careful design of these decorated plasmonic nanoantenna to maximize their photocatalytic activity"--

Book excerpt: Nanoscience and nanotechnology concern themselves with the research and application of extremely small things and can be used across all scientific fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, material science and engineering. Nanoparticles are of great scientific interest as they provide a bridge between bulk materials and atomic or molecular structures. Interesting and unexpected properties of nanoparticles are largely due to the large surface area of the material. Nanoparticles of noble metals including silver (Ag) attract the interest of many researchers owing to their high potential for plasmonic devices in future. On the other hand, nanoparticles of silver (Ag) and silver halides (AgX) have played central roles and have been extensively studied for many years in silver halide (AgX) photography. Combining knowledge of nanoparticles of Ag and related materials in plasmonics and AgX photography, this book reinforces already existing knowledge, but also presents new ideas for metal nanoparticles in plasmonics. The first part examines the structure and formation of nanoparticles of Ag and related materials. Systematic descriptions of the structure and preparation of Ag, Au, and other noble metal nanoparticles for plasmonics are followed by and related to those of nanoparticles of Ag and AgX in AgX photography. The exploration of the structure and preparation of Ag and AgX nanoparticles in photography incorporates nanoparticles with widely varied sizes, shapes, and structures, and formation processes from nucleation to growth. The second part describes the properties and performances of nanoparticles of Ag and related materials, including chapters on light absorption and scattering, catalysis, photovoltaic effects, and stability. The accumulated knowledge of many years of research in AgX photography is analysed and explained to deepen the reader's knowledge on metal nanoparticles for plasmonics, catalysis, and photovoltaics with new ideas arising from the interaction between them.

Book Nanomaterials

Download or read book Nanomaterials written by Igor Linkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-26 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many potential questions regarding the risks associated with the development and use of wide-ranging technologies enabled through engineered nanomaterials. For example, with over 600 consumer products available globally, what information exists that describes their risk to human health and the environment? What en- neering or use controls can be deployed to minimize the potential environmental health and safety impacts of nanomaterials throughout the manufacturing and product lifecycles? How can the potential environmental and health benefits of nanotechnology be realized and maximized? The idea for this book was conceived at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on “Nanomaterials: Environmental Risks and Benefits and Emerging Consumer Products. ” This meeting – held in Algarve, Portugal, in April 2008 – started with building a foundation to harmonize risks and benefits associated with nanomaterials to develop risk management approaches and policies. More than 70 experts, from 19 countries, in the fields of risk assessment, decision-analysis, and security discussed the current state-of-knowledge with regard to nanomaterial risk and benefits. The discussion focused on the adequacy of available risk assessment tools to guide nanomaterial applications in industry and risk governance. The workshop had five primary purposes: Describe the potential benefits of nanotechnology enabled commercial products. Identify and describe what is known about environmental and human health risks of nanomaterials and approaches to assess their safety. Assess the suitability of multicriteria decision analysis for reconciling the benefits and risks of nanotechnology.

Book Solution phase Assemblies of Silver Nanoparticles for Plasmon Tuning

Download or read book Solution phase Assemblies of Silver Nanoparticles for Plasmon Tuning written by Sirine Bayram and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Metallic plasmonic nanostructures continue to fascinate scientists and draw efforts into their smart design and assembly owing to their ability to enhance light manipulation and confinement in small volumes. Plasmonic interactions may be exploited in light-based photonic devices, where the miniaturization of photonic structures is essential to increase their sensitivity and speed. Common dielectric waveguides are restricted by the diffraction limit of light, which, for visible light, is several hundreds of nanometres. For nanodevices, much smaller photonic elements are sought through extended planar structures capable of light guiding. The flux of surface plasmons can be tuned and acclimatized for a desired purpose by the controlled organization of metallic nanoparticles into higher order arrays and assemblies. The self-assembly of simple nanoparticle building blocks could provide an inexpensive means to achieve this goal. This thesis showcases the plasmon tuning of silver nanostructures via either their in-solution assembly into extended networks or shaping them into ring geometries. In chapters three through five, we generate and examine, both experimentally and theoretically, extended anisotropic silver nanoparticle assemblies in solution using controlled amounts of one of three inexpensive, widely available, and environmentally benign short ditopic ligands: cysteamine, dithiothreitol and cysteine in aqueous solution. The self-assembly of the extended structures is enforced by hydrogen bonding. Varying the ligand concentration modulates the extent and density of these unprecedented anisotropic structures. Our results show a correlation between the chain nature of the assembly and the generation of spectral anisotropy. Deuterating the ligand further enhances the anisotropic signal by triggering more compact aggregates and reveals the importance of solvent interactions in assembly size and morphology. Spectroscopic measurements are compared to calculations of the absorption spectra of randomly assembled silver chains and aggregates based on the discrete dipole approximation. The models support the experimental findings and reveal the importance of aggregate size and shape as well as particle polarizability in the plasmon coupling between nanoparticles. In the fifth chapter, we present a more insightful data on the optical response of the silver nanoparticles assemblies via dark-field spectroscopic measurements on individual silver clusters of known morphologies and configuration. In the sixth chapter, we present our work on utilizing the tobacco mosaic virus coat protein as a command surface to grow and assemble silver nanoparticles into sub-30 nm rings. Plasmonic ring structures have stimulated rapid growth in the field of plasmonics due to their great impact on sensing, lasing, and nonlinear optics technologies. The fabrication of plasmonic nanorings remains of substantial interest by virtue of their enhanced electric and magnetic response to light fields which can be subsequently exploited in diverse applications. Scaling down the size of nanorings holds promise in creating artificial magnetism at wavelengths matching the solar spectrum. Nanosized bioscaffolds can be utilized to tackle the challenge of size reduction of metallic rings owing to their miniature features as well as their well-known biomineralization capacity. The versatility of TMV allows the formation of both solid rings and rings consisting of discrete nanoparticles that are characterized by UV-vis and TEM. The pH-dependent coulombic surface map along with the annular geometry of the protein aggregate allow the generation of rings with or without a central nanoparticle. Our silver rings are believed to be the smallest to date, and they can offer a test material for existing theories on metallic nanorings of this heretofore unreached size scale." --

Book Selected Topics in Chemistry

Download or read book Selected Topics in Chemistry written by Dr. A.Abdul Jameel and published by Vandana Publications. This book was released on with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While searching the syllabi for the spectral aspects of Inorganic compounds and metal complexes, we come across some important chapters in chemistry in almost all Universities in India and abroad. Laser Raman spectroscopy, Supramolecular chemistry, Nanochemistry and Sonochemistry are found either as separate papers or as chapters in a paper in B.Sc., M.Sc. and M.Phil. syllabi. So we thought of including these chapters along with the inorganic aspects of spectroscopy like Nuclear Quadrupole spectroscopy, ORD and CD of Inorganic compounds, Mass spectra of inorganic compounds and Photoelectron spectroscopy. The limited knowledge of Laser chemistry and Raman spectroscopy leads to the less understanding of Laser Raman spectroscopy. Hence chapters on Laser chemistry and Fundamentals of Raman spectroscopy are included in this book. These chapters were once considered as specialization in chemistry but due to advancement in chemistry, they find place in the regular curriculum. The book is written in a simple language with more advanced and latest informations. Diagrams and tables are given for the better understanding of the subject matter. The book provides a comprehensive and indepth coverage of the subject. There is a shortage of suitable text books for these chapters and this book may fill the gap and will mostly be useful to all the B.Sc. and M.Sc. students and M.Phil. Scholars globally. This book is an outcome of very long teaching and research experience of the authors in the field of Inorganic chemistry. Apart from the subject study, this book may also be used for writing the competitive examinations like UGC–NET, Civil Services Examination and so on. This book is also useful for the interdisciplinary students studying physics and biological sciences.
