Book Shielding Concerns at a Spallation Source

Download or read book Shielding Concerns at a Spallation Source written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrons produced by 800-MeV proton reactions at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center spallation neutron source cause a variety of challenging shielding problems. We identify several characteristics distinctly different from reactor shielding and compute the dose attenuation through an infinite slab/shield composed of iron (100 cm) and borated polyethylene (15 cm). Our calculations show that (for an incident spallation spectrum characteristic of neutrons leaking from a tungsten target at 90/degree/) the dose through the shield is a complex mixture of neutrons and gamma rays. High-energy (> 20 MeV) neutron production from the target is approx. =5% of the total, yet causes approx. =68% of the dose at the shield surface. Primary low-energy (

Book excerpt: Neutrons produced by medium-energy (800-MeV) proton reactions at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center spallation neutron source cause a variety of difficult shield problems. We describe the general shielding questions encountered at such a spallation source, and contrast spallation and reactor source shielding issues using an infinite slab-shield composed of 100 cm of iron and 15 cm of borated polyethylene. The calculations show that (for an incident spallation spectrum characteristic of neutrons leaking at 90 degrees from a tungsten target) high-energy neutrons dominate the dose at the shield surface. Secondary low-energy neutrons (produced by high-energy neutron attenuation) and attendant gamma-rays add significantly to the dose. The primary low-energy neutrons produced directly at the tungsten source contribute negligibly to the dose, and behave similarly to neutrons with a fission spectrum distribution. 8 refs., 10 figs.

Book Spallation Neutron Source Radiation Shielding Issues

Download or read book Spallation Neutron Source Radiation Shielding Issues written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes results of Spallation Neutron Source calculations to estimate radiation hazards and shielding requirements for activated Mercury, target components, target cooling water, and 7Be plateout. Dose rates in the accelerator tunnel from activation of magnets and concrete were investigated. The impact of gaps and other streaming paths on the radiation environment inside the test cell during operation and after shutdown were also assessed.

Book Spallation Neutron Source Beam Dump Radiation Shielding Analysis

Download or read book Spallation Neutron Source Beam Dump Radiation Shielding Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary shielding calculations were performed to establish the dimensions of the radiation shielding surrounding the three Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) beam stops. Steel shielding thicknesses were sized to give dose levels of 1, 2, and 5 mrem/h at the top of the shield, and, to provide enough shielding along the sides and bottom of the beam dump so that soil activation is not a problem. It was concluded that 144 in. of steel shielding is needed above the beam stop. The thickness of the concrete floor in the service building above the dump was not a part of these calculations. This shielding design is current as of January 2000.

Book Handbook of Spallation Research

Download or read book Handbook of Spallation Research written by Detlef Filges and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed and comprehensive reference to spallation -- from the foundations to the latest applications is the only work of its kind and is written by two internationally renowned researchers. Clearly divided into three parts, it begins with the basic principles, while the second part describes the proton-nucleus and proton-matter experiments so-called thin and thick target experiments in terms of secondary particle production as hadrons, pions, muons, photons, electrons, light and intermediate masses, isotope production, heating and energy deposition and materials damage. Many of the experiments are associated with studies, investigations and the construction of spallation neutron sources since 1975 with emphasis on the most recent developments. The final part on technology and applications describes the various engineering problems associated with high intensity neutron spallation sources, ATW's, the needed accelerator systems, material and neutron issues, and high energy neutron source shielding aspects. A must-have for engineers and physicists working in or entering this field.

Book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding

Download or read book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need has arisen for a comprehensive handbook for engineers faced with problems of radiation shielding design. Although there are several excellent books on shielding, they either do not give enough consideration to the many practical design problems, or are limited to special aspects of the subject. Recognizing the universal need, the International Atomic Energy Agency decided to sponsor the publication ofthe present Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shield ing. At the first editorial discussions it was agreed that, if such a book were to be undertaken, it would be appropriate not only to create a useful design tool for the practising engineer but also to include well-referenced basic data for the research worker. Although trying to keep the book down to a reasonable size, the editors have aimed at a complete presentation of the subject, covering and linking both the tech nology and the science of shielding. Efforts to make terms and definitions consistent throughout have been only partially successful, owing to the continuing development of new ideas. However, inconsisten cies that could not be eliminated are identified whenever possible.

Book Shielding Calculations for the Long Pulse Spallation Source Facility

Download or read book Shielding Calculations for the Long Pulse Spallation Source Facility written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe tools under development for use in deep penetration shielding problems in accelerator environments. The LAHET monte carlo code is now being upgraded in anticipation of a merger of this code with MCNP. Variance reduction via Geometry Splitting/Russian Roulette has recently been added to LAHET and is now being tested in the design of shielding for the Long Pulse Spallation Source Facility. In addition, we demonstrate methods of visualizing fluence based quantities such as equivalent dose and heating throughout the target and shielding.

Meeting and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 908 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolving around the interaction between spectrometer and target-station design and performance, this volume emphasises the need for feedback that must exist between scientific requirements and source design. It achieves a forum for the sharing of information on the development of spallation neutron sources. Of great value to researchers in condensed matter physics, instrumentation and data processing involved in neutron scattering at pulsed and steady sources.

Book Shielding Aspects of Accelerators Targets and Irradiation Facilities SATIF 6

Download or read book Shielding Aspects of Accelerators Targets and Irradiation Facilities SATIF 6 written by NEA Staff and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle accelerators are having an increasingly important impact on research, technology and lifestyle. Today they cover a wide range of applications including material science and medical applications. In recent years, requirements from new technological and research applications have emerged and the number of accelerator facilities has significantly increased. Their parameters (such as the beam energy, beam currents and intensities, targets composition, etc.) vary widely giving rise to new radiation shielding aspects and problems. The main objectives of the SATIF Meetings are to: promote the exchange of information among experts in the field of accelerator shielding and related topics; identify areas where international co-operation can be fruitful; and carry on a program of work in order to achieve progress in specific priority areas.
