Book An Annotated Bibliography for Taiwan Film Studies

Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography for Taiwan Film Studies written by Jim Cheng and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiled by two skilled librarians and a Taiwanese film and culture specialist, this volume is the first multilingual and most comprehensive bibliography of Taiwanese film scholarship, designed to satisfy the broad interests of the modern researcher. The second book in a remarkable three-volume research project, An Annotated Bibliography for Taiwan Film Studies catalogues the published and unpublished monographs, theses, manuscripts, and conference proceedings of Taiwanese film scholars from the 1950s to 2013. Paired with An Annotated Bibliography for Chinese Film Studies (2004), which accounts for texts dating back to the 1920s, this series brings together like no other reference the disparate voices of Chinese film scholarship, charting its unique intellectual arc. Organized intuitively, the volume begins with reference materials (bibliographies, cinematographies, directories, indexes, dictionaries, and handbooks) and then moves through film history (the colonial period, Taiwan dialect film, new Taiwan cinema, the 2/28 incident); film genres (animated, anticommunist, documentary, ethnographic, martial arts, teen); film reviews; film theory and technique; interdisciplinary studies (Taiwan and mainland China, Taiwan and Japan, film and aboriginal peoples, film and literature, film and nationality); biographical materials; film stories, screenplays, and scripts; film technology; and miscellaneous aspects of Taiwanese film scholarship (artifacts, acts of censorship, copyright law, distribution channels, film festivals, and industry practice). Works written in multiple languages include transliteration/romanized and original script entries, which follow universal AACR-2 and American cataloguing standards, and professional notations by the editors to aid in the use of sources.

Book Understanding the Political Culture of Hong Kong The Paradox of Activism and Depoliticization

Download or read book Understanding the Political Culture of Hong Kong The Paradox of Activism and Depoliticization written by Lam Wai-man and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the widely held belief that Hong Kong's political culture is one of indifference. The term "political indifference" is used to suggest the apathy, naivete, passivity, and utilitarianism of Hong Kong's people toward political life. Taking a broad historical look at political participation in the former colony, Wai-man Lam argues that this is not a valid view and demonstrates Hong Kong's significant political activism in thirteen selected case studies covering 1949 through the present. Through in-depth analysis of these cases she provides a new understanding of the nature of Hong Kong politics, which can be described as a combination of political activism and a culture of depoliticization.

Book China Learns from the Soviet Union 1949 Present

Download or read book China Learns from the Soviet Union 1949 Present written by Hua-Yu Li and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the Soviet Union strongly influenced China in the early 1950s, since China committed itself both to the Sino-Soviet alliance and to the Soviet model of building socialism. What is less well known is that Chinese proved receptive not only to the Soviet economic model but also to the emulation of the Soviet Union in realms such as those of ideology, education, science, and culture. In this book an international group of scholars examines China's acceptance and ultimate rejection of Soviet models and practices in economic, cultural, social, and other realms. The chapters vividly illustrate the wide-ranging and multi-dimensional nature of Soviet influence, which to this day continues to manifest itself in one critical aspect, namely in China's rejection of liberal political reform.

Download or read book Speaking to History written by Paul A. Cohen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient story of King Goujian, a psychologically complex fifth-century BCE monarch, spoke powerfully to the Chinese during China's turbulent twentieth century. Yet most Americans—even students and specialists of this era—have never heard of Goujian. In Speaking to History, Paul A. Cohen opens this previously missing (to the West) chapter of China's recent history. He connects the story to each of the major traumas of the last century, tracing its versatility as a source of inspiration and hope and elegantly exploring, on a more general level, why such stories often remain sealed up within a culture, unknown to outsiders. Labeling this phenomenon "insider cultural knowledge," Cohen investigates the relationship between past story and present reality. He inquires why at certain moments in their collective lives peoples are especially drawn to narratives from the distant past that resonate strongly with their current circumstances, and why the Chinese have returned over and over to a story from twenty-five centuries ago. In this imaginative stitching of story to history, Cohen reveals how the shared narratives of a community help to define its culture and illuminate its history.

Book The South China Sea Maritime Dispute

Download or read book The South China Sea Maritime Dispute written by Leszek Buszynski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South China Sea is a major strategic waterway for trade and oil shipments to Japan, Korea as well as southern China. It has been the focus of a maritime dispute which has continued now for over six decades, with competing claims from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei. Recently China has become more assertive in pressing its claims – harassing Vietnamese fishing vessels and seizing reefs in the Philippine claim zone. China has insisted that it has "indisputable sovereignty" over the area and has threatened to enforce its claim. All of this is unsettling and draws in the United States which is concerned about freedom of navigation in the area. The US has been supporting the Philippines and has been developing security ties with Vietnam as a check upon China. This book examines the conflict potential of the current dispute, it discusses how the main claimants and the United States view the issue, and assesses the prospects for a resolution of the problem.

Book Media and Communication in the Chinese Diaspora

Download or read book Media and Communication in the Chinese Diaspora written by Wanning Sun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China has brought about a dramatic increase in the rate of migration from mainland China. At the same time, the Chinese government has embarked on a full-scale push for the internationalisation of Chinese media and culture. Media and communication have therefore become crucial factors in shaping the increasingly fraught politics of transnational Chinese communities. This book explores the changing nature of these communities, and reveals their dynamic and complex relationship to the media in a range of countries worldwide. Overall, the book highlights a number of ways in which China’s "going global" policy interacts with other factors in significantly reshaping the content and contours of the diasporic Chinese media landscape. In doing so, this book constitutes a major rethinking of Chinese transnationalism in the twenty-first century.

Book A Critical History of New Music in China

Download or read book A Critical History of New Music in China written by Liu Chingchih and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the nineteenth century, after a long period during which the weakness of China became ever more obvious, intellectuals began to go abroad for new ideas. What emerged was a musical genre that Liu Chingchih terms "New Music." With no direct ties to traditional Chinese music, New Music reflects the compositional techniques and musical idioms of eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth–century European styles. Liu traces the genesis and development of New Music throughout the twentieth century, deftly examining the cultural, social, and political forces that shaped New Music and its uses by politicians and the government.

Book The Missing Girls and Women of China Hong Kong and Taiwan

Download or read book The Missing Girls and Women of China Hong Kong and Taiwan written by Hua-Lun Huang and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past century, tens of millions of women and girls have disappeared in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. There are many reasons: the women variously were sold as "foreign spouses"; imprisoned for their political beliefs; taken to night clubs or massage parlors to work as "escorts"; provided as "comfort women" to soldiers; or murdered by female corpse dealers and sold as "ghost brides" to families looking to give their deceased sons wives in the afterlife. The youngest girls fell victim to infanticide, the tragic result of a "one child" law in a male-dominated society. As a result of the gender imbalance these disappearances created, countless young males now suffer from the "marriage squeeze," remaining single without families of their own. This sociological study explores the institutional factors, develops a typology for these populations, and lays a foundation for the examination of lost populations in the future.
