Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson is best known for his The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and his two novels that would now be classified as Young Adult literature, Treasure Island and Kidnapped. The Scottish author had an uncanny talent for both adventure tales and character development, a combination so rare in literary history. His Long John Silver remains the archetype of the kindly pirate, including Captain Jack Sparrow of the immensely popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie series. Stevenson was a sickly man, and even as a child he spent much of his time in bed. These hours were not wasted, however, as the young man read voraciously and developed a keen sense of literary style. Stevenson went on to study law as a backup to his literary career, and he soon began to publish essays, short stories, and poems in various journals. Despite his poor health, Stevenson also traveled widely, enjoying a rather Bohemian life of the late Victorian world. The Suicide Club was first published in London Magazine in 1878 and later in his first collection of stories New Arabian Nights. It introduces Stevenson's detective, Prince Florizel of Bohemia, a reference to Shakespeare's play A Winter's Tale, and his companion Colonel Geraldine. The three stories in this collection revolve around Florizel's infiltration of the underground Suicide Club, an institution for desperate men who want to end their lives but fear the consequences of suicide for their family and friends. Each part has its own mystery and only in the last story does Florizel finally upend the treacherous group.Written nine years before the first Sherlock Holmes story, Stevenson helped to build the burgeoning detective genre in English. Although Florizel is not as well known today as Arthur Conan Doyle's creation, the contemporary genre owes as much to Stevenson as it does to Doyle himself.

Book Sherlock Holmes from Screen to Stage

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes from Screen to Stage written by Benjamin Poore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the development of Sherlock Holmes adaptations in British theatre since the turn of the millennium. Sherlock Holmes has become a cultural phenomenon all over again in the twenty-first century, as a result of the television series Sherlock and Elementary, and films like Mr Holmes and the Guy Ritchie franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. In the light of these new interpretations, British theatre has produced timely and topical responses to developments in the screen Sherlocks’ stories. Moreover, stage Sherlocks of the last three decades have often anticipated the knowing, metafictional tropes employed by screen adaptations. This study traces the recent history of Sherlock Holmes in the theatre, about which very little has been written for an academic readership. It argues that the world of Sherlock Holmes is conveyed in theatre by a variety of games that activate new modes of audience engagement.

Book Sherlock Holmes The Hero With a Thousand Faces Volume 2

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes The Hero With a Thousand Faces Volume 2 written by David MacGregor and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2022-06-22 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picking up the trail with the incredibly influential films of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, Volume II goes on to explore the antiheroic Sherlock Holmes films of the 1970s, and then the somewhat rocky journey of Holmes into the medium of television (actors Alan Wheatley, Douglas Wilmer, and Peter Cushing all declared their respective TV series as the worst experience of their professional careers). Television finally found its "definitive" Holmes in Jeremy Brett's portrayal for Granada Television, and then the BBC's "Sherlock" had flashed brilliantly across the cultural sky before crashing and burning in spectacular fashion. Still, despite its ignominious end, Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock Holmes quite literally changed the face of Sherlockian fandom overnight, as studious middle-aged white men now found themselves sharing uneasy ground with a younger, more diverse, and more female audience. Now a full-fledged transmedia phenomenon, Sherlock Holmes can be any gender, ethnicity, or species, and is celebrated in fan fiction and fanvids, as well as conventions that are far more inclusive than Sherlock Holmes societies of the past. Vincent Starrett's poetic notion that Sherlock Holmes is a character "who never lived and so can never die" has never been more true, and the Digital Age promises any number of new versions of Sherlock Holmes to come.

Book excerpt: There are numerous publications about the horror genre in film and television, but none that provide information about horror on a legitimate stage until now. This book highlights the most terrifying moments in theater history, from classical plays like Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound and Euripides' Medea to the violence of the Grand Guignol company productions in 18th-century France, and present-day productions like Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd, Stephen King's Carrie and dark 21st-century plays by Clive Barker and Conor McPherson. The book compiles the history and behind-the-scenes tales surrounding stage productions about monsters, hauntings and horrors both historical and imagined. Included are the nightmarish adaptations of popular writings from Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, Henry James, Arthur Conan Doyle, and others, as well as plays starring popular characters like Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man, the Phantom of the Opera, and the Woman in Black. Book The Villainous Stage

Download or read book The Villainous Stage written by Marvin Lachman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Live theatre was once the main entertainment medium in the United States and the United Kingdom. The preeminent dramatists and actors of the day wrote and performed in numerous plays in which crime was a major plot element. This remains true today, especially with the longest-running shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Sweeney Todd. While hundreds of books have been published about crime fiction in film and on television, the topic of stage mysteries has been largely unexplored. Covering productions from the 18th century to the 2013-2014 theatre season, this is the first history of crime plays according to subject matter. More than 20 categories are identified, including whodunits, comic mysteries, courtroom dramas, musicals, crook plays, social issues, Sherlock Holmes, and Agatha Christie. Nearly 900 plays are described, including the reactions of critics and audiences.
