Book Shedding Light on the Battlefield

Download or read book Shedding Light on the Battlefield written by Joseph N. Mait and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military applications of optical technology have a long history. For over 300 years, telescopes and binoculars have extended the range of a commander's vision. Periscopes allow submariners to view surface activities while submerged and, during World War II, the Norden bombsight provided American bombardiers accuracy that, although crude by today's standards, was unparalleled for its time. Since the invention of the laser in 1960 and the light emitting diode in 1965, advances in electronics have spilled over into optics and brought opto-electronics to the battlefield. Shortly after its invention, the laser was used to guide munitions in Vietnam. Night vision technology also made its first battlefield appearance in Vietnam. More sophisticated infrared imaging gave coalition forces in Operation Desert Storm a critical advantage in night operations. Advances in optics have enhanced air operations with cockpit head-up displays based on the principles of holography. Communication systems also continue to benefit from advances in optics. The term photonics derives from the photon, the elementary particle of light. In electronic systems, the electron carries information. In photonic systems, it is the photon. The term photonics is also used to distinguish between systems that use conventional optical elements to form images and those that use light to communicate, compute, and store information. One of the first applications of photonics to communications was the photophone, demonstrated by Alexander Graham Bell in 1880, which used light beams to transmit information wirelessly. Bell believed the invention of the photophone was more significant than that of the telephone, but it took almost a century for light to be used in communication; the first widespread deployment of optical fiber began in the 1970s. The recent downturn in the telecommunications industry was fueled in part by unmet expectations in the growth of optical fiber communications. However, the downturn was due to poor market predictions, not poor technology. The dependence of the GIG on optical fiber indicates strong support for photonics as an enabling technology for transformational communications. Although the application of optics to military communications is as ancient as warfare itself, the application of photonics is relatively more recent. Here we address the application of photonics to sensing and information processing for intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), in which the efficient generation and delivery of optically-encoded information is exploited. The outer shell of future military networks will be populated by sensors, and the Department of Defense (DOD) is pushing to provide sensor capabilities to tactical commanders. However, in tactical operations, bandwidths are reduced2 and operational urgency prevents data from being transmitted to ground stations for subsequent processing. To take full advantage of new capabilities, sensors must be able to collect data and rapidly extract from it and transmit actionable information. This can be accomplished if information is generated as close to the sensor platform as possible. However, tactical platforms, e.g., mini-unmanned aerial vehicles, place a premium on the size, weight, and power requirements of a sensor package. Other potential platforms include unattended ground sensors, unmanned ground vehicles, and even dismounted soldiers. It is in such applications, where the complexity of processing is high and the physical constraints on the system are limiting, that photonics offers the greatest advantage over electronics. The advantage lies in the fact that, whereas two electrons in close proximity affect one another, two photons do not. advantage over electronics in meeting this objective.

Book excerpt: John Keegan's groundbreaking portrayal of the common soldier in the heat of battle -- a masterpiece that explores the physical and mental aspects of warfare The Face of Battle is military history from the battlefield: a look at the direct experience of individuals at the "point of maximum danger." Without the myth-making elements of rhetoric and xenophobia, and breaking away from the stylized format of battle descriptions, John Keegan has written what is probably the definitive model for military historians. And in his scrupulous reassessment of three battles representative of three different time periods, he manages to convey what the experience of combat meant for the participants, whether they were facing the arrow cloud at the battle of Agincourt, the musket balls at Waterloo, or the steel rain of the Somme. The Face of Battle is a companion volume to John Keegan's classic study of the individual soldier, The Mask of Command: together they form a masterpiece of military and human history.

Book From Freedom Fighters to Jihadists

Download or read book From Freedom Fighters to Jihadists written by Vera Mironova and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, thousands of pro-democracy rebel groups spontaneously formed to fight the Assad regime. Years later, the revolution was unrecognizable as rebel opposition forces had merged into three major groups: Jabhat al-Nusra, Ahrar al Sham, and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Why did these three groups rapidly increase in size and military strength while others simply disappeared? What is it about their organizational structure and their Islamist ideology that helped group manage their fighters so successfully? With these questions at the forefront, this book examines the internal organization of armed groups and, in particular, their human resources. Analyzing the growth of these groups through the prism of a labor market theory, this book shows that extreme Islamist groups were able to attract fighters away from more moderate groups because they had better internal organization, took better care of fighters both physically and monetarily, experienced less internal corruption, and effectively used their Islamist ideology to control recruits. With unparalleled access and extensive ethnographic research drawn from her interviews and her year embedded with Iraqi Special Operation forces, Mironova delves deep into the ideological and practical nexus of some of the most radical groups in the Middle East. This book brings together more than 600 survey-interviews with local civilians and fighters on the frontline in Syria and a dataset of human resource policies from 40 armed groups; it is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants insight into the on the ground functioning of rebel organizations.

Book Archaeological Perspectives on the Battle of the Little Bighorn

Download or read book Archaeological Perspectives on the Battle of the Little Bighorn written by Melissa A. Connor and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the Custer massacres on June 25, 1876, the question has been asked: What happened - what REALLY happened - at the Battle of the Little Bighorn? We know some of the answers, because half of George Armstrong Custer’s Seventh Cavalry - the men with Major Marcus Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen - survived the fight, but what of the half that did not, the troopers, civilians, scouts, and journalist who were with Custer? Now, because a grass fire in August 1983 cleared the terrain of brush and grass and made possible thorough archaeological examinations of the battlefield in 1984 and 1985, we have many answers to important questions. On the basis of the archaeological evidence presented in this book, we know more about what kinds of weapons were used against the cavalry. We know exactly where many of the men fought, how they died, and what happened to their bodies at the time of or after death. We know how the troopers were deployed, what kind of clothing they wore, what kind of equipment they had, how they fought. Through the techniques of historical archaeology and forensic anthropology, the remains and grave of one of Custer’s scouts, Mitch Boyer, have been identified. And through geomorphology and the process of elimination, we know with almost 100 percent certainty where the twenty-eight missing men who supposedly were buried en masse in Deep Ravine will be found.

Book excerpt: In medieval Scotland, an outlaw seeks his freedom—from both the merciless khan who conquered Europe, and the demon spirit that possesses him. All of Europe is ruled by the Khan, whose Golden Horde swept its conquering way across Europe in 1244. The Scottish outlaw Toby Strangerson, known as Longdirk, is ruled by an even harsher master. He is possessed by a “hob,” a demon spirit murderous as a child, although inherently neither good nor evil. Toby wants his freedom—and the spirit of the tyrant‐demon Nevil, ensorcelled in amethyst, can be traded for the exorcism of the hob. In order to make the exchange, though, Toby and his friend and ally Hamish must face the hexer Oreste on his own ground, in the dank and fetid dungeons of Barcelona, where souls are racked and tortured and destroyed on the relentless wheel of the Inquisition. This book was originally published under the pseudonym Ken Hood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the assistance of several scholars, including James M. McPherson and Gary Gallagher, and a long-time specialist in Civil War books, Ralph Newman, David Eicher has selected for inclusion in The Civil War in Books the 1,100 most important books on the war. These are organized into categories as wide-ranging as "Battles and Campaigns," "Biographies, Memoirs, and Letters," "Unit Histories," and "General Works." The last of these includes volumes on black Americans and the war, battlefields, fiction, pictorial works, politics, prisons, railroads, and a host of other topics. Annotations are included for all entries in the work, which is presented in an oversized 8 1/2 x 11 inch volume in two-column format. Appendixes list "prolific" Civil War publishers and other Civil War bibliographies, and the works included in Eicher's mammoth undertaking are indexed by author or editor and by title. Gary Gallagher's foreword traces the development of Civil War bibliographies and declares that Eicher's annotation exceeds that of any previous comprehensive volume. The Civil War in Books, Gallagher believes, is "precisely the type of guide" that has been needed. The first full-scale, fully-annotated bibliography on the Civil War to appear in more than thirty years, Eicher's The Civil War in Books is a remarkable compendium of the best reading available about the worst conflict ever to strike the United States. The bibliography, the most valuable reference book on the subject since The Civil War Day by Day, will be essential for college and university libraries, dealers in rare and secondhand books, and Civil War buffs.
