Book Professionals in Western Film and Fiction

Download or read book Professionals in Western Film and Fiction written by Kenneth E. Hall and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In American Westerns, the main characters are most often gunfighters, lawmen, ranchers and dancehall girls. Civil professionals such as doctors, engineers and journalists have been given far less representation, usually appearing as background characters in most films and fiction. In Westerns about the 1910 Mexican Revolution, however, civil professionals also feature prominently in the narrative, often as members of the intelligentsia--an important force in Mexican politics. This book compares the roles of civil professionals in most American Westerns to those in films on the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Included are studies on the Santiago Toole novels by Richard Wheeler, Strange Lady in Town with Greer Garson and La sombra del Caudillo by Martin Luis Guzman.

Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD IN FICTION • A NEW YORKER BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • From one of our most accomplished novelists, a mesmerizing story about a mother and daughter seeking refuge in the chaotic aftermath of the Civil War—and a brilliant portrait of family endurance against all odds "A tour de force." —Tayari Jones, author of An American Marriage In 1874, in the wake of the War, erasure, trauma, and namelessness haunt civilians and veterans, renegades and wanderers, freedmen and runaways. Twelve-year-old ConaLee, the adult in her family for as long as she can remember, finds herself on a buckboard journey with her mother, Eliza, who hasn’t spoken in more than a year. They arrive at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia, delivered to the hospital’s entrance by a war veteran who has forced himself into their world. There, far from family, a beloved neighbor, and the mountain home they knew, they try to reclaim their lives. The omnipresent vagaries of war and race rise to the surface as we learn their story: their flight to the highest mountain ridges of western Virginia; the disappearance of ConaLee’s father, who left for the War and never returned. Meanwhile, in the asylum, they begin to find a new path. ConaLee pretends to be her mother’s maid; Eliza responds slowly to treatment. They get swept up in the life of the facility—the mysterious man they call the Night Watch; the orphan child called Weed; the fearsome woman who runs the kitchen; the remarkable doctor at the head of the institution. Epic, enthralling, and meticulously crafted, Night Watch is a stunning chronicle of surviving war and its aftermath.

Book Heart of War

  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book Heart of War written by Hal Weidner and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Parker declares war on a politically powerful traitor to England. Immediately, Parker becomes a marked man. All hell is visited upon him, but Parker has been fighting battles since he was seven years old and is not easily daunted. To survive, he fights one brutal battle after another, descending into war's inexpressible darkness. The author of this well-crafted thriller stages his war from a perspective that sheds light on our post 9/11 experiences. We observe the overextended British Empire fighting two wars amidst the corruption resulting from war's confusion and excess. This is an 18th century sea story. It is, however, more than just a sea story-in the way that Heart of War is more than a steamer trip into the Congo. For its brilliance and its honesty, it will win a place in the reader's heart. "Hal Weidner has emerged to write a spectacular yarn in the tradition of Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander. Weidner's imagination creates a hair-raising thriller that will keep you rooted to your easy chair with the doors locked. Weidner's twists, turns and subplots keep us guessing by pitting good and evil against an uneasy grey. I could not put this book down." -Robert Sain, psychiatrist and author. "In Hal Weidner's novel, the beauty and strangeness of the past and of the sea are evoked in spare and lovely prose. This novel brings to life a fully imagined reality in all its splendor. Heart of War is suspenseful and languorous, sparse and lyrical, by a novelist fully capable of transporting the reader skillfully to its world." -Laura Kasischke, Internationally renowned poet and novelist. "Hal Weidner's vivid depiction of warfare, intrigue, treachery, and heroism among British, American and French factions during the 18th Century mirrors eerily the tensions that we see and imagine shaping the world today." -Tom Zimmerman. Editor, The Huron River Review.

Book excerpt: The Battle of Monocacy, which took place on the blisteringly hot day of July 9, 1864, is one of the Civil War's most significant yet little-known battles. What played out that day in the corn and wheat fields four miles south of Frederick, Maryland., was a full-field engagement between some 12,000 battle-hardened Confederate troops led by the controversial Jubal Anderson Early, and some 5,800 Union troops, many of them untested in battle, under the mercurial Lew Wallace, the future author of Ben-Hur. When the fighting ended, some 1,300 Union troops were dead, wounded or missing or had been taken prisoner, and Early---who suffered some 800 casualties---had routed Wallace in the northernmost Confederate victory of the war. Two days later, on another brutally hot afternoon, Monday, July 11, 1864, the foul-mouthed, hard-drinking Early sat astride his horse outside the gates of Fort Stevens in the upper northwestern fringe of Washington, D.C. He was about to make one of the war's most fateful, portentous decisions: whether or not to order his men to invade the nation's capital. Early had been on the march since June 13, when Robert E. Lee ordered him to take an entire corps of men from their Richmond-area encampment and wreak havoc on Yankee troops in the Shenandoah Valley, then to move north and invade Maryland. If Early found the conditions right, Lee said, he was to take the war for the first time into President Lincoln's front yard. Also on Lee's agenda: forcing the Yankees to release a good number of troops from the stranglehold that Gen. U.S. Grant had built around Richmond. Once manned by tens of thousands of experienced troops, Washington's ring of forts and fortifications that day were in the hands of a ragtag collection of walking wounded Union soldiers, the Veteran Reserve Corps, along with what were known as hundred days' men---raw recruits who had joined the Union Army to serve as temporary, rear-echelon troops. It was with great shock, then, that the city received news of the impending rebel attack. With near panic filling the streets, Union leaders scrambled to coordinate a force of volunteers. But Early did not pull the trigger. Because his men were exhausted from the fight at Monocacy and the ensuing march, Early paused before attacking the feebly manned Fort Stevens, giving Grant just enough time to bring thousands of veteran troops up from Richmond. The men arrived at the eleventh hour, just as Early was contemplating whether or not to move into Washington. No invasion was launched, but Early did engage Union forces outside Fort Stevens. During the fighting, President Lincoln paid a visit to the fort, becoming the only sitting president in American history to come under fire in a military engagement. Historian Marc Leepson shows that had Early arrived in Washington one day earlier, the ensuing havoc easily could have brought about a different conclusion to the war. Leepson uses a vast amount of primary material, including memoirs, official records, newspaper accounts, diary entries and eyewitness reports in a reader-friendly and engaging description of the events surrounding what became known as "the Battle That Saved Washington."
