McCosker, coauthor of Great White Shark "The timing of this publication is ideal given the status of some of California's elasmobranch populations and the need for a deeper understanding of their biology, ecology, and fishery management. The book is a comprehensive treatment—if one wants to find out the latest information on any species of shark or ray off California, this is the place to go. An outstanding work!"—Gregor M. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Young and I for some years have been gathering material from all over the world about the Selachians-the Sharks, Skates, Rays, and their allies -of which there are more than 600 known species. We originally intended merely to up-date Captain Young's book ''Shark!! Shark!!'''' (published by Gotham House in 1934, and now a collector's item), but, as the material ever expanded, it was decided that an entirely new book, covering a much broader field, was needed. Adaterial was collected from all over the world for many years. When Captain Young and I felt that the research was nearly completed, we called upon Tom Allen, an experienced newspaperman, to aid us in transforming the research material into a book. Tom and I continued the research up to (and beyond!) the completion of the manuscript. Tom also did further research and added new material in the course of writing the book. In all scientific classifications, the Selachians are separated clearly from the Teleosteans, or Bony Fishes, and there are even leading ichthyologists \\ ho do not regard the former as fishes at all but rather as representing a separate and distinct Class of animal life...

Book Basking Sharks

Download or read book Basking Sharks written by Scott Wallace and published by Transmontanus. This book was released on 2006 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basking shark, a fish the size of a London bus, used to appear off the BC coast every spring. During World War II, the fish became a nuisance to commercial nets and fishing trollers. Gliding just below the surface, the basking shark was an easy target for a new pest eradication program that touted killing one of the plankton-eating monsters as great sport. By 1970, the basking shark was virtually eradicated in BC. Now researchers Scott Wallace and Brian Gisborne have pieced together what there is to know about this locally extinct ocean denizen. Basking Sharks is Number 14 in the Transmontanus series of books edited by Terry Glavin.
