Book Distributed Algorithms for Message Passing Systems

Download or read book Distributed Algorithms for Message Passing Systems written by Michel Raynal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed computing is at the heart of many applications. It arises as soon as one has to solve a problem in terms of entities -- such as processes, peers, processors, nodes, or agents -- that individually have only a partial knowledge of the many input parameters associated with the problem. In particular each entity cooperating towards the common goal cannot have an instantaneous knowledge of the current state of the other entities. Whereas parallel computing is mainly concerned with 'efficiency', and real-time computing is mainly concerned with 'on-time computing', distributed computing is mainly concerned with 'mastering uncertainty' created by issues such as the multiplicity of control flows, asynchronous communication, unstable behaviors, mobility, and dynamicity. While some distributed algorithms consist of a few lines only, their behavior can be difficult to understand and their properties hard to state and prove. The aim of this book is to present in a comprehensive way the basic notions, concepts, and algorithms of distributed computing when the distributed entities cooperate by sending and receiving messages on top of an asynchronous network. The book is composed of seventeen chapters structured into six parts: distributed graph algorithms, in particular what makes them different from sequential or parallel algorithms; logical time and global states, the core of the book; mutual exclusion and resource allocation; high-level communication abstractions; distributed detection of properties; and distributed shared memory. The author establishes clear objectives per chapter and the content is supported throughout with illustrative examples, summaries, exercises, and annotated bibliographies. This book constitutes an introduction to distributed computing and is suitable for advanced undergraduate students or graduate students in computer science and computer engineering, graduate students in mathematics interested in distributed computing, and practitioners and engineers involved in the design and implementation of distributed applications. The reader should have a basic knowledge of algorithms and operating systems.

Book Message Passing Versus Distributed Shared Memory on Networks of Workstations

Download or read book Message Passing Versus Distributed Shared Memory on Networks of Workstations written by Rice University. Dept. of Computer Science and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We compared the message passing library Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) with the distributed shared memory system TreadMarks, on networks of workstations. We presented the performance of nine applications, including Water and Barnes-Hut from the SPLASH benchmarks; 3- D FFT, Integer Sort and Embarrassingly Parallel from the NAS benchmarks; ILINK, a widely used genetic analysis program; and SOR, TSP, and QuickSort. TreadMarks performed nearly identical to PVM on computation bound programs, such as the Water simulation of 1728 molecules. For most of the other applications, including ILINK, TreadMarks performed within 75% of PVM with 8 processes. The separation of synchronization and data transfer, and additional messages to request updates for data in the invalidate-based shared-memory protocol were two of the reasons for TreadMarks's lower performance. TreadMarks also suffered from extra data communication due to false sharing. Moreover, PVM benefited from the ability to aggregate scattered data in a single message."

Book excerpt: DISC, the International Symposium on DIStributed Computing, is an annual forum for research presentations on all facets of distributed computing. DISC 2000 was held on4-6 October, 2000 in Toledo, Spain. This volume includes 23 contributed papers and the extended abstract of an invited lecture from last year’s DISC. It is expected that the regular papers will later be submitted in a more polished form to fully refereed scienti?c journals. The extended abstracts of this year’s invited lectures, by Jean-Claude Bermond and Sam Toueg, will appear in next year’s proceedings. We received over 100 regular submissions, a record for DISC. These s- missions were read and evaluated by the program committee, with the help of external reviewers when needed. Overall, the quality of the submissions was excellent, and we were unable to accept many deserving papers. This year’s Best Student Paper award goes to “Polynomial and Adaptive Long-Lived (2k?1)-Renaming” by Hagit Attiya and Arie Fouren. Arie Fouren is the student author.

Book Patterns for Parallel Software Design

Download or read book Patterns for Parallel Software Design written by Jorge Luis Ortega-Arjona and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential reading to understand patterns for parallel programming Software patterns have revolutionized the way we think about how software is designed, built, and documented, and the design of parallel software requires you to consider other particular design aspects and special skills. From clusters to supercomputers, success heavily depends on the design skills of software developers. Patterns for Parallel Software Design presents a pattern-oriented software architecture approach to parallel software design. This approach is not a design method in the classic sense, but a new way of managing and exploiting existing design knowledge for designing parallel programs. Moreover, such approaches enhance not only build-time properties of parallel systems, but also, and particularly, their run-time properties. Features known solutions in concurrent and distributed programming, applied to the development of parallel programs Provides architectural patterns that describe how to divide an algorithm and/or data to find a suitable partition and link it with a programming structure that allows for such a division Presents an architectural point of view and explains the development of parallel software Patterns for Parallel Software Design will give you the skills you need to develop parallel software.

Book Self stabilizing Transformations Between Message Passing and Shared Memory Models

Download or read book Self stabilizing Transformations Between Message Passing and Shared Memory Models written by Kleoni Ioannidou and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We give a new formal definition of a transformation of self-stabilizing algorithms from one distributed model to another and propose a criterion for proving correctness of such transformations. Our method is more natural than the already existing simulation techniques. We give a new transformation of self-stabilizing algorithms from the synchronous and asynchronous message passing models to the asynchronous shared memory model. To do this, we implement a self-stabilizing algorithm that solves mutual exclusion in the shared memory model using read/write registers. This algorithm has improved time complexity compared with existing mutual exclusion algorithms. We also modify an existing transformation of self-stabilizing algorithms from the shared memory model to a message-driven message passing model with time-outs so that it transforms self-stabilizing algorithms from the shared memory to another message passing model that we define without using time-outs.
