Book Shape Optimization of Airfoils Without and with Ground Effect Using a Multi objective Genetic Algorithm

Download or read book Shape Optimization of Airfoils Without and with Ground Effect Using a Multi objective Genetic Algorithm written by Yilei He and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this thesis is on shape optimization using a genetic algorithm. A multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is employed to optimize the shape of an airfoil to improve its lift and drag characteristics, in particular to achieve two objectives simultaneously that is to increase its lift as well as its lift to drag ratio. The commercially available software FLUENT is employed to calculate the flow field on an adaptive structured mesh, which is generated by the commercial mesh generating software ICEM. The flow field is calculated using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations in conjunction with a two equation k-[omega] SST turbulence model. Bezier Curves are employed to generate airfoil shapes for a particular generation of the genetic algorithm; these shapes are tested by MOGA in conjunction with FLUENT to evaluate their fitness by calculating their lift and lift to drag ratio. The process is continued for a number of generations until the lift and lift to drag ratios converge to their optimal values. MOGA optimization method is used to optimize a well-known wind turbine airfoil S809 and NACA 4412 airfoil in ground effect. The results show significant improvement in both the lift coefficient and lift-to-drag ratio of the optimized airfoil compared to the original airfoil.

Book Shape Optimization of Busemann type Biplane Airfoil for Drag Reduction Under Nonlifting and Lifting Conditions Using Genetic Algorithms

Download or read book Shape Optimization of Busemann type Biplane Airfoil for Drag Reduction Under Nonlifting and Lifting Conditions Using Genetic Algorithms written by Yi Tian and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this thesis is on the shape optimization of the Busemann-type biplane airfoil for drag reduction under both nonlifting and lifting conditions using genetic algorithms. The concept of the Busemann-type biplane airfoil was first introduced by Adolf Busemann in 1935. Under its design condition at a specific supersonic flow speed, the Busemann biplane airfoil eliminates all wave drag due to its symmetrical biplane configuration; however it produces zero lift. Previous research has shown that the original Busemann biplane airfoil design has a poor performance under off-design conditions as well. In order to solve this problem of zero lift and to improve the off-design-condition performance of the biplane airfoil, shape optimization of the asymmetric biplane airfoil is performed to minimize the drag while maximizing the lift. In this thesis, the commercially available CFD solver ANSYS FLUENT is employed for computing the inviscid flow past the biplane airfoil. An unstructured mesh is generated using ICEM software. A second-order accurate steady density-based solver is employed to compute the supersonic flow field. A single-objective genetic algorithm (SOGA) is employed to optimize the Busemann biplane airfoil shape under nonlifting condition to minimize the drag coefficient and a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is employed to optimize the Busemann biplane airfoil shape under lifting condition to maximize both the lift coefficient and the lift to drag ratio simultaneously. Both results obtained by using SOGA and MOGA show significant improvement in the design and off-design-condition performance of the optimized Busemann biplane airfoil compared to the original one.

Book Evolutionary Optimization and Game Strategies for Advanced Multi Disciplinary Design

Download or read book Evolutionary Optimization and Game Strategies for Advanced Multi Disciplinary Design written by Jacques Periaux and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many complex aeronautical design problems can be formulated with efficient multi-objective evolutionary optimization methods and game strategies. This book describes the role of advanced innovative evolution tools in the solution, or the set of solutions of single or multi disciplinary optimization. These tools use the concept of multi-population, asynchronous parallelization and hierarchical topology which allows different models including precise, intermediate and approximate models with each node belonging to the different hierarchical layer handled by a different Evolutionary Algorithm. The efficiency of evolutionary algorithms for both single and multi-objective optimization problems are significantly improved by the coupling of EAs with games and in particular by a new dynamic methodology named “Hybridized Nash-Pareto games”. Multi objective Optimization techniques and robust design problems taking into account uncertainties are introduced and explained in detail. Several applications dealing with civil aircraft and UAV, UCAV systems are implemented numerically and discussed. Applications of increasing optimization complexity are presented as well as two hands-on test cases problems. These examples focus on aeronautical applications and will be useful to the practitioner in the laboratory or in industrial design environments. The evolutionary methods coupled with games presented in this volume can be applied to other areas including surface and marine transport, structures, biomedical engineering, renewable energy and environmental problems. This book will be of interest to students, young scientists and engineers involved in the field of multi physics optimization.

Book Multiple Objective Optimization of an Airfoil Shape

Download or read book Multiple Objective Optimization of an Airfoil Shape written by Antoine Smith Dryden Dymond and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An airfoil shape optimization problem with conflicting objectives is handled using two different multi-objective approaches. These are an a priori scalarization approach where the conflicting objectives are assigned weights and summed together to form a single objective, and the Pareto-optimal multi-objective approach. The optimization formulations for both approaches contain challenging numerical characteristics which include noise, multi-modality and undefined regions. Gradient-, surrogate- and population-based single objective optimization methods are applied to the à priori' formulations. The gradient methods are modified to improve their performance on noisy problems as well as to handle undefined regions in the design space. The modifications are successful but the modified methods are outperformed by the surrogate methods and population based methods. Population-based techniques are used for the Pareto-optimal multi-objective approach. Two established optimization algorithms and two custom algorithms are implemented. The custom algorithms use fitted unrotated hyper ellipses and linear aggregating functions to search the design space for non-dominated designs. Various multi-objective formulations are posed to investigate different aspects of the airfoil design problem. The non-dominated designs found by the Pareto-optimal multi-objective optimization algorithms are then presented.

Book Simulation driven Aerodynamic Design Using Variable fidelity Models

Download or read book Simulation driven Aerodynamic Design Using Variable fidelity Models written by Leifur Leifsson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer simulations is a fundamental tool of the design process in many engineering disciplines including aerospace engineering. However, although high-fidelity numerical models are accurate, they can be computationally expensive with evaluation time for a single design as long as hours, days or even weeks. Simulation-driven design using conventional optimization techniques may be therefore prohibitive. This book explores the alternative: performing computationally efficient design using surrogate-based optimization, where the high-fidelity model is replaced by its computationally cheap but still reasonably accurate representation: a surrogate. The emphasis is on physics-based surrogates. Application-wise, the focus is on aerodynamics and the methods and techniques described in the book are demonstrated using aerodynamic shape optimization cases. Applications in other engineering fields are also demonstrated.State-of-the-art techniques and a depth of coverage never published before make this a unique and essential book for all researchers working in aerospace and other engineering areas and dealing with optimization, computationally expensive design problems, and simulation-driven design.

Book Free form Airfoil Shape Optimization Under Uncertainty Using Maximum Expected Value and Second order Second moment Strategies

Download or read book Free form Airfoil Shape Optimization Under Uncertainty Using Maximum Expected Value and Second order Second moment Strategies written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free-form shape optimization of airfoils poses unexpected difficulties. Practical experience has indicated that a deterministic optimization for discrete operating conditions can result in dramatically inferior performance when the actual operating conditions are different from the - somewhat arbitrary - design values used for the optimization. Extensions to multi-point optimization have proven unable to adequately remedy this problem of "localized optimization" near the sampled operating conditions. This paper presents an intrinsically statistical approach and demonstrates how the shortcomings of multi-point optimization with respect to "localized optimization" can be overcome. The practical examples also reveal how the relative likelihood of each of the operating conditions is automatically taken into consideration during the optimization process. This is a key advantage over the use of multipoint methods.

Book Recent Development of Aerodynamic Design Methodologies

Download or read book Recent Development of Aerodynamic Design Methodologies written by Kozo Fujii and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has made remarkable progress in the last two decades and is becoming an important, if not inevitable, analytical tool for both fundamental and practical fluid dynamics research. The analysis of flow fields is important in the sense that it improves the researcher's understanding of the flow features. CFD analysis also indirectly helps the design of new aircraft and/or spacecraft. However, design methodologies are the real need for the development of aircraft or spacecraft. They directly contribute to the design process and can significantly shorten the design cycle. Although quite a few publications have been written on this subject, most of the methods proposed were not used in practice in the past due to an immature research level and restrictions due to the inadequate computing capabilities. With the progress of high-speed computers, the time has come for such methods to be used practically. There is strong evidence of a growing interest in the development and use of aerodynamic inverse design and optimization techniques. This is true, not only for aerospace industries, but also for any industries requiring fluid dynamic design. This clearly shows the matured engineering need for optimum aerodynamic shape design methodologies. Therefore, it seems timely to publish a book in which eminent researchers in this area can elaborate on their research efforts and discuss it in conjunction with other efforts.
