Download or read book Is Hip Hop Dead written by Mickey Hess and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hip hop is remarkably self-critical as a genre. In lyrics, rappers continue to debate the definition of hip hop and question where the line between underground artist and mainstream crossover is drawn, who owns the culture and who runs the industry, and most importantly, how to remain true to the culture's roots while also seeking fame and fortune. The tension between the desires to preserve hip hop's original culture and to create commercially successful music promotes a lyrical war of words between mainstream and underground artists that keeps hip hop very much alive today. In response to criticisms that hip hop has suffered or died in its transition to the mainstream, this book seeks to highlight and examine the ongoing dialogue among rap artists whose work describes their own careers. Proclamations of hip hop's death have flooded the airwaves. The issue may have reached its boiling point in Nas's 2006 album Hip Hop is Dead. Nas's album is driven by nostalgia for a mythically pure moment in hip hop's history, when the music was motivated by artistic passion, instead of base commercialism. In the course of this same album, however, Nas himself brags about making money for his particular record label. These and similar contradictions are emblematic of the complex forces underlying the dialogue that keeps hip hop a vital element of our culture. Is Hip Hop Dead? seeks to illuminate the origins of hip hop nostalgia and examine how artists maintain control of their music and culture in the face of corporate record companies, government censorship, and the standardization of the rap image. Many hip hop artists, both mainstream and underground, use their lyrics to engage in a complex dialogue about rhyme skills versus record sales, and commercialism versus culture. This ongoing dialogue invigorates hip hop and provides a common ground upon which we can reconsider many of the developments in the industry over the past 20 years. Building from black traditions that value knowledge gained from personal experience, rappers emphasize the importance of street knowledge and its role in forging a career in the music business. Lyrics adopt models of the self-made man narrative, yet reject the trajectories of white Americans like Benjamin Franklin who espoused values of prudence, diligence, and delayed gratification. Hip hop's narratives instead promote a more immediately viable gratification through crime and extend this criminal mentality to their work in the music business. Through the lens of hip hop, and the threats to hip hop culture, author Mickey Hess is able to confront a range of important issues, including race, class, criminality, authenticity, the media, and personal identity.

Book The Green White House

Download or read book The Green White House written by Lynne Kelleher and published by Black & White Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Carefully researched and excellently written . . . a wonderful account of the special relationship between Ireland and the USA.' BERTIE AHERN 'Anybody with an interest in Irish-American politics and personalities will want to read The Green and White House.' DICK SPRING Intimate, complex, long-lasting: the links between Ireland and US presidents extend much further and deeper than JFK. From Andrew Jackson in 1829 to Woodrow Wilson in 1913 and Joe Biden in 2021, Ireland's sway in the White House is hugely significant. Handwritten letters, weatherworn tombstones, shipping records and even an old desk unlock the ancestral secrets of 23 presidents. Spanning the centuries from covered wagons to the American Revolution, the birth of the Irish Republic to JFK's heady glamour, The Green and White House takes in political machinations and the firebrands who pushed for freedom, justice and peace for Ireland. For centuries, Irish emigrants crossed the Atlantic by boat, but an intense diplomatic bromance has seen American commanders-in-chief returning to remote Irish villages via Air Force One and armoured limousines. Incredible stories spring from these presidential visits. High-tech phones are installed in an ancient cemetery while an Aran cardigan is treated like a hostile device. Anti-personnel nets produce a bumper catch of salmon, but a Secret Service gun is lost then found amid a jubilant crowd. Each homecoming - always conducted with a twinkle in the eye - turns local people into international media darlings. But this transatlantic courtship, forged over the unearthed mysteries of sprawling family trees, has secured Ireland an annual invite to the White House - something no other nation can rival. THE GREEN AND WHITE HOUSE takes a wry look at the special relationship one tiny nation shares with the world's greatest superpower.

Book Port Danby Cozy Mystery Series

Download or read book Port Danby Cozy Mystery Series written by London Lovett and published by Wild Fox Press. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains books 13-15 of London Lovett's Port Danby Cozy Mystery series. Join Lacey 'Pink' Pinkerton and the cast of colorful, lovable Port Danby characters—including the endearing and handsome Detective James Briggs—for three intriguing murder mysteries. • Cornflowers and Corpses (Book 13) Pink's Flowers is in the middle of a busy bridal season, and Lacey is struggling to find a replacement for her irreplaceable assistant Ryder Kirkland. In the midst of dealing with quirky, incompetent and occasionally just unpleasant new floral assistants, Lacey finds her focus and time once again taken up by murder. The West Coast Bird Watcher's Society has come to town for some birding frivolity and excursions. When one of the members winds up dead, Lacey and her super nose jump into action. The victim had plenty of enemies and not many friends so theories and accusations take flight. Detective Briggs and Lacey must untangle the clues to find the killer. • Jasmine and Jealousy (Book 14) It's a busy end of summer for Lacey Pinkerton and so much is happening Lacey can hardly keep up. Ryder returns but his arrival does not go as expected and Lacey finds herself smack in the center of a Lola driven bout of drama. On top of that, there's a new detective in town. While Lacey's happy that Briggs will have more free time (especially if it's spent with her) she's not too sure about Detective Fairchild. And worse, it seems Detective Fairchild is not too sure about Lacey. A taco truck arrives in town. The popular Taco Brothers run a smooth operation but the relationship between the siblings is anything but smooth. When one of the brothers winds up dead, Lacey is anxious to help investigate. But the new detective doesn't want her around. Of course that doesn't stop her from finding out who killed the Taco Brother. And in the midst of such a whirlwind week, Lacey finally gets a big break on the Hawksworth murder. Will Lacey finally put together the pieces to solve the hundred-year-old murder mystery? • Shamrocks and Shenanigans (Book 15) After Lacey Pinkerton solved the hundred-year-old mystery of the Hawksworth family murders, Port Danby dropped into a season of chaos. Mayor Price resigned from office, and the town grew divided with some standing behind Harlan Price, and the Price family legacy, and others, including Lacey, deciding that Bertram Hawksworth needed total exoneration and a loftier place in Danby history. With a vacancy in the mayor's office, Nellie Smith, Bertram's great-grandniece decides to run, and Lacey is happy to join the campaign. When a man is murdered on Nellie's driveway, all evidence points to the candidate. Lacey is in a race against time to solve the murder and save the campaign. But the investigation takes a dangerous turn when Lacey becomes the killer's next target. More in the series: Thistles and the Unthinkable (Book 16) Holly and Horror (Book 17) Book 18 TBA
