Book excerpt: Shammi Kapoor continues to gather Lifetime Achievement Awards, as the country still dances to his songs. India’s first major dancing star, with a fabulous selection of music to back his moves, he never toppled from the pantheon of film greats, no matter how many superstars came after him. The Rebel Star - the middle son of Prithviraj Kapoor - dominated the 60s with his musicals and today’s dancing stars are indebted to him for liberating the Hindi film hero from the strong, silent, traditional role. The book traces his career with his ups and downs, touches upon his tempestuous life and gives credit where it’s due. Shammi Kapoor will always be among the best dancing stars and actors ever seen in Hindi films.

Book excerpt: ‘We are like the Corleones in The Godfather’—Randhir Kapoor There is no film family quite like the Kapoors. A family of professional actors and directors, they span almost eighty years of film-making in India, from the 1920s to the present. Each decade in the history of Hindi films has had at least one Kapoor—if not more—playing a large part in defining it. Never before have four generations of this family—or five, if you include Bashesharnath Kapoor, Prithviraj Kapoor’s father, who played the judge in Awara—been brought together in one book. The Kapoors details the professional careers and personal lives of each generation—box-office successes and failures, the ideologies that informed their work, the larger-than-life Kapoor weddings and Holi celebrations, their extraordinary romantic liaisons and family relationships, their love for food and their dark passages with alcohol. Based on extensive personal interviews conducted over seven years with family members and friends, Madhu Jain goes behind the façade of each member of the Kapoor clan to reveal what makes them tick. The Kapoors resembles the films that the great showman Raj Kapoor made: grand and sweeping, with moments of high drama and touching emotion. ‘Few books on Indian cinema have been written with such wit, clarity and sparkle’—Outlook ‘Jain writes in a language that is simple and pithy. . . it will keep alive public interest in the Kapoors who refuse to call it a day’—Telegraph ‘Immensely readable...will surely find a place in the Indian cineaste’s library’—Biblio

Book Queer Asian Cinema

Download or read book Queer Asian Cinema written by Andrew Grossman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore queer themes in films from Hong Kong gangster flicks to Bollywood melodramas! Although Asian films have reached a new height in popularity worldwide, Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade is the first full-length book in English solely devoted to examining the aesthetics and politics of homosexuality in Asian films. This unique book presents multiple points of view on the portrayal of gay, lesbian, and transgendered people in film throughout Asia. From the subversive sadomasochism of Japan's ”pink films” to the hard-boiled world of Hong Kong's gangster movies, Queer Asian Cinema analyzes and discusses attitudes toward homosexuality in the full spectrum of Asian film. In addition to studies of the representation of identified gay men, lesbians, and transgendered individuals, it reveals the hidden homoerotic subtext of otherwise conventional films. Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade examines diverse aspects of Asian films, including: the political and psychological links between feudal and sadomasochist hierarchies the inevitable punishment of homoerotic bonds in gangster films the integration of the homosexual couple into the Confucian family structure in Korean films the complexities of cross-gender casting the differences between transvestism and cross-dressing the definition of male genitalia as obscene Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade brings together experts in both film-making and movie criticism, providing a balanced viewpoint to unite the worlds of academic and popular perceptions on this subject. It opens an exciting discussion of this important and largely neglected area of cinematic discourse.

Book Galaxy Golden Stars of the Silver Screen

Download or read book Galaxy Golden Stars of the Silver Screen written by Dr. Jaskiran Chopra and published by Idea Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book hopes to capture some of the magic created by the famous stars –heroes, heroines, villains, comedians, character actors- as well as playback singers and music directors and of course, directors of the golden era of Hindi cinema that spanned the 1960s and 1970s.This magic still lives on and I hope this book will play a role in keeping it alive and passing it on to the coming generations. The genius of these towering personalities does not end with them- it provides a peep into a time that had a romance and artistic feel all of its own. I was fortunate to have been part of it since my childhood, when the love affair with Hindi cinema started. My parents simply loved to watch films and my brother and I always went with them. So we were initiated into this magical world quite early in life And it stayed with us alongwith lingering memories of songs and stars on cinema screens in theatres now long vanished. This magic, those memories, that fascination is now pushing me to put on paper my love for Hindi cinema’s most beautiful era. Through my personal fondness and emotional connection with the films and stars of this era, I hope to bring a warm touch to their profiles. With this nostalgic lens, I hope to bring out the features no longer visible in present-day films, their themes or characters. This book takes one back into a world where emotions, romance, melody and a very different set of moral values prevailed in our cinema. Charisma too was a dominant force on the silver screen and my book highlights its various ineffable aspects. Chetan Anand ‘s fine directorial skill, Raj Kapoor’s showmanship, Dilip Kumar’s perfection as the king of tragedy, Madhubala’s ethereal beauty and vibrancy or Dev Anand;s

How were creative differences resolved? How did the changing India reflect in their films? Was being brothers an advantage or a disadvantage for them? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Day That Year as a title came from a TV program of the 90s called “This Week That Year”, that I used to watch on TV. I could relate to it very well as I remembered the release dates of most of the movies of the late 60s and early 70s and when the host spoke about it, I went down my memory lane and loved the experience. Once I became part of Facebook in 2009, I found a great forum to share my experiences of movie releases in Bombay then and now Mumbai. I found a lot of like-minded people who could relate to my post and shared their experiences and thoughts as comments. Quite a few of them encouraged me to share it with a larger audience and hence suggested publishing it. I never thought of doing it but when people kept telling me regularly to do it, I decided to give it a try, and here comes my experiences and thoughts of the movies released in the late 60s and early 70s. Hope you like what you read, though many of the statements would look repetitive. But do accept the experiences of a teenager who turns into a man in 1973.
